It's the obligatory new year blog post.

And yes, I am posting this at around midnight on new year. I have a nasty cold, so I decided to disobey nurgle's one command and stay home.

    Just for kicks

I'm mucking around with Lulu for a work-related project (very boring stuff) and thought I would do a quality test with something fun.

Or maybe that comma is in the wrong place. I haven't decided yet.

    The odd things

I've just been reading through old comments on my scraps story, after publishing yet another chunk from the ancient cutting room floor. It's remarkable how many of the commenters are still around - but also how many logged off for the last time, soon after making their last comment there.

    But in brighter news

While I'm not making any promises about any particular project here, I am actually writing again. I figure if I write enough of something, some pony words might drop out somewhere along the line as well. You never know. What I'm working on at the moment is essentially a re-write of a story I read a long time ago; an old pulp sci-fi tale, about a spaceship that manages to get lost in the

Publish or be damned? There is this amazing word called 'and'... · 8:55pm May 10th, 2016

Yes, another chapter of No Room For Regret has appeared, after a whole year of bugger all and nothing. I actually sat on this for a very long time, trying to re-write it, trying to improve it, because I had become obsessive about the words. Trapped in the... the filler, that's how I felt.

Of course I was also very nearly dying from a lack of essential bodily fluids, which never helps, but the real issue was that my confidence was gone. Finally I've been poked and prodded and acquiesced to the demands, and published what I had. The alternative was never moving forward. Is it my best writing? Absolutely not. My best writing happened nearly fifteen years ago and everything since then has been a slow spiral into mediocrity... but at least it's something.

I'm going to go and write something else now. I just hope the year-long gap hasn't completely destroyed the plot.

MFW I motivate you to do something.

Huh. What'd you write fifteen years ago?

Time to read.

Even at the risk of distracting you from writing more, I can't honestly believe this:

My best writing happened nearly fifteen years ago and everything since then has been a slow spiral into mediocrity... but at least it's something.

Is accurate. Experience does count, and counts a lot.

In any case, the massive flood of music and writing and everything else in the modern world has a crippling effect on a lot of people. We end up comparing ourselves to the best, and give up because we can't match them, instead of being happy with being able to do all right.

3937007 On top of all that, it's probably nostalgia glasses as well.
