That Time of the Season Once Again

Hello all, hope everybody is having a good holiday.

I'm a bit too hopped up on eggnog right now to really go into depth, but for anybody who remains who cares to hear it, I'll try and have a status update pretty soon.

I found some VINTAGE Brony Meme Stupidity in the back of my closet

So, no real work done on anything creative right now, my dudes. Still working through my shit. Getting a lot of therapy, but unfortunately the "greater situation" I'm dealing with is both existential, ongoing, and an annoyingly hot topic right now, so it's an uphill battle.

    The Yearly Holiday Janitorial Update

...Is anybody even still watching this space?

So, another year has gone by and I'm afraid, once again, I have little to show for it.

    Christmas Wishes, Apologies, and Updates

Hello, everybody. Long time no... well... anything really.

It's been exactly one year since I've given anybody here any blog whatsoever, and that was just a quick Christmas gag. It's been even longer since I've actually given anybody any updates on any of my stories or what's going on in my life.

...Nintendo, you're WAY off! It's not even CLOSE to April first!

In all seriousness my mind is more blown by the fact Cloud ever got into a SMASH BROS game. You know... the game that focuses on NINTENDO CHARACTERS... or at least characters with some major degree of PRESENCE and IMPORTANCE on Nintendo consoles like Snake (first ever major stealth game and it was on the NES), Sonic (Sega in a major deal with Nintendo atm), and Megaman (freaking Megaman).

As far as I can tell, the only time Cloud ever appeared on a Nintendo console was (and I had to do some digging to find this) in a cameo in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.

Then again, maybe they're releasing the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 remake (gag) on the Wii U or NX and this is to celebrate and prepare for that. That's the only thing I can assume.

I can't say I'm MAD about this at all... more... taken off guard. I mean, Final Fantasy 7 (and by extension Cloud) was a HUGE part of my childhood so I'm not really upset and I'm actually a little excited. Though I'd be lying if I said there weren't other characters I'd PREFER to get in over him.

I dunno, this is just surreal. Cloud was always one of those characters that somebody would suggest and people would laugh and say "what are you stupid or something? He'd never get in you freaking fanboy! It's just not going to happen."

Next thing you know they're going to put in Goku.

Huh. Well. That's happening.

Also, add Quote from Cave Story to that list if we're including Shovel Knight.

...
From the looks of the trailer, his play is going to be a fusion of Adult Link and Ike. Also, are the summons assist trophies, or part of the stage? Or are they alternative Final Smashes?

Those are questions that must be answered.

Next thing you know they're going to put in Goku.

Now watch, as the upcoming December broadcast actually announces Goku.

The world would not be ready for the calamity that would erupt if that actually happened.

Well to be fair Cloud was in two Smash Bros.-esque games: Dissidia Final Fantasy and it's sequel. Honestly I think it's awesome, I mean if there's one FF character everyone recognizes no matter the generation it's Cloud and his enemy Sephiroth. Besides I don't know how this can throw you off guard when not too long ago they put freaking Ryu from Street Fighter in Smash, if anything Cloud's appearance balances things out.

As for Phoenix Wright he has Ultimate Marvel Vs, Capcom 3.

They seem to be part of the stage. Odin leaves it in two, Ifrit tilts it with a lava geyser, Bahamut attacks and even shows were he'll hit; these are elements that don't tell me that their assist trophies or final smashes.

I think there's also a little bit of Little Mac in Cloud's moveset as well, given by his limit break.

I would've expected Locke or even Kain, heck I would even take Edge, but CLOUD!? That threw me off...for a moment.

I see you just copy + pasted your reply to my PM. :rainbowwild:

3538656
I still have yet to play Cave Story. I've heard it's really good but I know literally nothing about it beyond what was sung about in brentalfloss' "with lyrics" video, which doesn't provide a lot of context.

3538926

I decided it made a good enough journal response as well. Figured I'd share my response with the rest of the folks that hang around my page :twilightsheepish:

3538897
Personally, I would have either chosen a generic Black Mage, Cecil, or Terra.

3538660
My guess is that they're stage hazards. Not what I would have chosen, given that the stage in question is Midgar (I would have chosen Diamond Weapon attacking in the background with superattacks like what happened in the game), but it works as well as anything, I suppose.

3538824
That'd be an interesting mechanic. My first thought was that it was likely his final smash, but that's probably Omnislash, come to think of it.

3538710
Let's be fair here.
1) Dissidia is only "like Smash Bros" in that it crosses characters over (though it does so from only one franchise), and in that it's a fighting game. Its mechanics, though, are so incredibly different that it's really comparing apples and oranges. There was never any suggestion that he might be in a game like this, and especially not Smash itself. Which leads us into point 2...
2) Street Fighter (or more accurately, Street Fighter II and its variations) was a HUGE hit on the SNES. Ryu has been in PLENTY of Nintendo games, and enough really big name ones, to warrant being in Smash. Cloud, on the other hand, has pretty much never been on a Nintendo console, with the sole exception of that Kingdom Hearts game I mentioned. While FF7 is an important note in video game history, it's always been associated with Playstation.

3538690
It's so surreal. Cloud was always a part of the "Unholy Trifecta" of characters that thousands of uneducated, overly excitable, quick-to-assume people would demand be in Super Smash Bros. Characters requested over and over again and continually dismissed because of various obvious reasons that SHOULD exclude them from ever being in a game. The other two were Goku and Spongebob.

I'm a teeny-tiny bit worried this will set a precedent...

I swear to god if they add Spongebob into the game, I quit life.

3538967
They might add SpongeBob as an assist trophy...
God I hope not.

3538967 Cloud's probably in either due to high demand from fans, or what you said in the blog.

Then again, maybe they're releasing the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 remake (gag) on the Wii U or NX and this is to celebrate and prepare for that. That's the only thing I can assume.

Maybe both.

Besides, SpongeBob's chances of being in Smash Bros are as slim as Shrek getting in.

Don't forget that Square and Nintendo had a bad history as it was headed into the N64 days and we haven't seen a Final Fantasy theme game on the Nintendo Console until now.

So they put Cloud but not Snake BULLSHIT!!!

3538967 Oh and I suppose Pac-Man was on the Nintendo too along with Sonic? Like I said one of the reasons Cloud was chosen is because unlike previous characters from previous games everyone recognizes him and his villain. Oh and I suppose there was a suggestion that Ryu and Megaman would be in Smash? The consoles have nothing to do with it, the companies do. All the characters you've mentioned they all have one thing in common not the system but the company. Square has crossed with Nintendo on multiple projects, same with Capcom, Sega, Konami and Techmo. So it's only natural they bring a Square character to Smash and besides it could've just as well have been Chrono from Chrono Trigger or any number of characters from Dragon Quest.

Well the way i see it is that Final Fantasy is to rpgs as say mario is to platformers, or pac-man to arcade games. A series that pretty much pioneered the genre. Although Cloud specifically could easily be due to popularity. At least thats my opinion.

Jesus, why the bitterness? Anyway, you're missing the point.

First of all, Pacman has had DOZENS of games on Nintendo systems. Just look at this list and you'll see for yourself that there are plenty of games representing Pacman on Nintendo. Same goes for Sonic, who has had things like the Sonic Adventure games, Sonic Heroes, Sonic and the Secret Rings/Black Knight, Unleashed, etc etc etc.

The point is that these characters have been represented multiple times on Nintendo consoles. It has less to do with the company that owns them than it does the characters themselves. I would not bat an eye if a Black Mage, Cecil, Terra, Kain, Locke, "Warrior of Light," or even some more obscure character like Firion, Bartz, or Luneth appeared in the game. It's the fact that it's CLOUD, who has not been represented but for ONE time in a CAMEO that wasn't even a part of HIS FRANCHISE that stuns me.

If it was JUST the company trying to cash in on a little bit of that Smash pie as you seem to suggest, then you need to reread what you said because you disproved yourself. Why COULDN'T they have used Crono? Chrono Trigger was a CLASSIC SNES game and he would fit damn perfectly in Smash. And while it might not be as popular as FF7, Chrono Trigger is still a wildly popular game. Or, as I've just suggested, why not Cecil or Terra or Locke? Or a Dragon Quest character as you suggested.

And let's face it... the amount of people who will be buying this game JUST for Cloud is going to be negligible, so with that in mind, there's seemingly no strategic monetary reason to use Cloud just to get a slice of Smash pie.

My confusion has nothing to do with the company. Square wanted in. I get that.
My confusion has to do with the character they picked. Honestly, Crono would have been a more reasonable choice.

3539246

I don't buy the whole "oh he's a popular character that's why" thing. If that were true, we'd be seeing Master Chief in Smash.

(Dear Mr. Sakurai, please don't put Master Chief in Smash.)

3539302
What i meant was that it makes sense for final fantasy to be in smash due to it being one of the first rpgs to take off, but adding cloud specifically because he is popular from that series. I meant he's popular in terms of final fantasy characters.

And to say there was once a MLP game for a Nintendo console.

No one had any Idea this well happen.

I say this was the best surprise we had since Wii Fit Trainer.

So probabillities aside, what character would you like to see in a smash game?
And all probabillities considered what characters (nintendo or not) do you think they might add in the future?

3539297 I don't know what you're talking about. What bitterness? derpicdn.net/img/2015/9/30/991224/large.png :derpytongue2:

My point is why not Cloud? It could have been anyone but they chose Cloud there is no reason to get upset that they chose him over the others. Obviously there is a good reason for it, just like there's probably a good reason why out of all the FF characters 7 is represented most in the KH series. The same could be said of Ryu from Street Fighter. Why not Akuma or Ken or Fei Long? What about Megaman? Why not X or Zero? Hell we could ask the same questions about the entire roster from each game. How many appearances/cameos a character has made on a certain company's system should not be a factor in deciding who gets thrown into a crossover.

I would be excited either way whether they chose Cloud or not because new characters mean new strategies.

Dusty, Cloud has been in at least 3 games for a Nintendo system FYI. Granted, two of those are Kingdom Hearts games, and the other is a FF music/rpg/rythem hybrid.

Altough, I would have preferred WoL, myself. I can see why they chose him.

3539302 They adhere to a whole list of criteria for deciding new characters:

1. What character would be the most appropriate choice to represent X series, whether due to recognition, popularity, design, or all of the above.

2. Does the character in question fill a gap in the Smash roster, or otherwise stand out enough amongst all the other fighters?

3. For third party characters specifically, not only them, but the franchise they come from needs to be notable enough in the gaming industry to warrant a rep.

Cloud fits this criteria well enough. Him not being associated with Nintendo, as Snake's inclusion in Brawl already indicated, means nothing, but only because he's a third party character.

...so, does this mean Cloud might come face to face with some ponies in the next chapter of Disharmony...?

3539613

Except Snake got his start on the NES with the original Metal Gear.
(well, technically MSX but so few people played that it almost doesn't count)

3540475

No. The roster in the story will not change.

3540622 Yes, but there wasn't a single reference to the NES port of Metal Gear in Brawl (likely for the best, all things considered). And Snake was clearly representing the Solid series rather than the original two games, which, by the way, were two of the most popular games for the MSX, if not the most.

The roster in the story will not change.

Now that I've thought about it some more, Shulk would overshadow every other character in the story (including Master Hand), so it's probably for the best that he's excluded.

3540622
Oh well. -shrug-

3540649

Even if we ignore the original NES Metal Gear, there's still Twin Snakes to consider (and more recently the 3DS port of MGS3)

3540669 That is true. However, Final Fantasy still has a stronger history with Nintendo than Metal Gear. The fact that Cloud's getting in Smash is almost confirmation that FF7's coming to the NX, or at the very least, that Square and Nintendo have gotten over their shaky past.

I'm not sure what it would take to get Snake back into Smash, but with how huge the roster is right now, I can't find anything worth complaining about.

3540750

That's my guess. This seems like, without them openly coming out and confirming it, a pretty good indication the Cloud will be on the NX. That's the only reason I can think that they'd go with Cloud over, say, Crono from Chrono Trigger.

In that long list of names I know nearly allo of them but may I ask who phosphora is? I have just never heard of him/her at all.

Goku is already in... cycle through Ryu's costumes... there's an orange one... looks like goku... combine that with the blue fireball he shoots... yea...

He looks pretty cool.
