FanFic Dilemma · 4:41am Sep 19th, 2015

It's happened again.

I know there are a lot of people who want me to finish "The Princess and the Unicorn," but it's become like a chore now. I keep losing interest in that story, one reason being I'm starting to dislike the ships I've set up. I mean I have the story in mind but I don't feel the urge to write it. I'm even thinking of abandoning it entirely.

The thing is, I've been trying to write stuff other than fanfiction, especially with National Writing Month coming up and I'm considering going for it this year. Also, college has started, giving me less time to write what I want.

Then a few nights ago I had an MLP-related dream, which gave me...you guessed it, a fanfic idea. It's been plaguing my mind all week, and looking a lot more promising than the other multi-chapter fic I'm working on. It's darker than what I usually write. I don't want to give away too much, but it involves vampires. That trope is overused these days, but it's something I want to try, and I swear it's not going to be like the Twilight saga (at least I hope). I've been thinking more along the lines of classic vampire lore from Transylvania, with a bit of my own take on it of course. A lot of you don't know this, but I spent most of my teenage years in Romania and have taken trips up to Transylvania, so this makes this idea a little more personal. I actually attempted to start it and have written more in a few hours than what I've written in the past few weeks. This idea won't leave me.

What do you think I should do? Should I follow through with this new inspiration or should I put it on hold until my other fanfic is done, even though I've been working on it for over a year and lack the motivation to finish?

If it's something that interests you, put it out and see what kind of a reaction you get from your readers.

That's actually a wonderful idea! Get on with it!

Run with the new thing. It may get you kickstarted in general.

You should take a break (hiatus) from the other story and write this new idea of a story. As long as you don't completly abandon the other story(cancel it :fluttershysad:), you should go with your creative flow :ajsmug::twilightsmile:. Always remember that writing is supposed to be fun not a chore, when you write you write for your fans and yourself.

-Techy

How Romanian are you?

While I'd like to see princess and pauper reach a proper end I would understand if you did discontinue it.

as for your other fic Idea, go ahead with and see what comes forth.

What if you made a schedule? Like say on Wednesday or friday, a chapter of one of your stories came out. It could be weeks apart but it would give an idea of what to get done. With a schedule prepared, you could use some time to write whatever. Weather it's new or old. Need a break from school? Set a timer and see if you can unwind with writing in a few minutes. That doesn't work, go take a quick walk or grab a snack. It doesn't really matter, what do you think you should do?

You shouldn't feel forced to do something you don't want to. If you want to cancel the story or put it on hiatus, do it. Maybe you'll come back to it someday and continue it or rewrite it, but you wouldn't want to stress yourself out or kill any part of your love of writing over a story that you've lost your passion for.

If you're struck with inspiration, seize it while it's there! It gives you a chance to get away from the other story you're feeling unmotivated on while writing something you're enjoying, and maybe later you'll come back to it with a fresh perspective.

I think you should put the story on hold or cancel it if you feel like writing for it is a chore. Fanfic writing is suppose to be fun and if this new idea feels like a more fun project then go for that instead.

Well, maybe you can have someone ghost write the next couple of chapters of the princess ad unicorn?
Maybe by actually write, but do what I did when brush stroke was stuck on her last chapter of Instant teen: have me write out the body and most of the meat of the chapter, then have yourself smooth it out.
I mean after all, mlp can have more than one writter on an epsiode at a time

Honestly if you're struggling to finish the fanfic, I would say just put it on hiatus for now, and if you really can't finish it, just cancel it. If you have inspiration to write something else, you should go for it.
I was enjoying the Princess and the Unicorn, but as a fan of the paranormal, I am interested in seeing where this new idea goes :raritystarry:. Vampires aren't usually my favourite supernatural story, but I still enjoy a good story about them from time to time. I can't wait!!! :pinkiehappy: That just might be my inner fan girl squealing for the paranormal though :twilightblush:

OK, so I would exhaust all you can for your previous story , try to ask why you wanted write that fic, and why you wanted that paring in the first place. Then if you can't find that flame again then plan out the next idea and move on. Because if you jump to the new idea you most likly to hit a wall much quicker. Also I have seen lots vamp stories, so if you can add something new to it that be great. Hope that helped.

That's a tough decision to choose.
For the story "The princess and The unicorn" three opinions.
1.put on hiatus and work on it sometime when you feel like it.
2. Just do one last chapter of it being done with it and into a new story.
3.let someone take over it (which I don't think you'll let someone take over it)

As for the new story idea.I say go for it:ajsmug:

Maybe you should try doing other things that inspire you right now and come back to the story later If you are ever inspired again

I say: Strike while the iron is still hot!

I Recommend that you put it on hiatus and just do what your mind tells you. You can't get a lot done if your mind is wondering to other places you don't even keep track of.

I for one donĀ“t like where the princess and the unicorn is going, better stop now before things get awful

Follow your heart and dreams, they will help you! So I say, keep doing what you want to do!

Don't cancel it its just getting good. Put it on hold until then.

I hear you on the College thing I have been trying to write while college is going on.

Anyways, just take a break from your stories and pursue this story. It sounds interesting and i do feel the vampire thing is a bit overused. I don't think Twilight ruined Vampires for me, but it did make me stay away from them for a while. So excited for Hotel Transylvania 2.

We will understand if you take a break from Princess and the Unicorn. Some writers lose interest in their stories and need a break from them. So, do what you feel is write.

:) Hope you have a great day, DF

I get the same problem, so my advice is it just be best to work on the one you want to write verses the one you can't complete. Maybe once you get it out of your system you'll maybe want to get back to the other one. Do what feels best for you. :ajsmug:

I think it'd be best to stop the fanfic if you've lost interest about it, just set up a note for the fans that don't look at the blogs, maybe they could come up with their own spin-off.
The new idea sounds intriguing, and I like it :rainbowwild:

If you wanna do it, you gotta do it. You wanna do the new fic, so the new fic you gotta do.

If you need to wait for inspiration, wait. But little tip, keep your writing busy so you don't shelve it.

Breathe
You need to take care of yourself first:eeyup:

Don't let the fans push you too hard.
Try takin' a break from time to time, and try gettin some rest.
When you have taken enough rest, try pickin' up writin' at a slow pace, and you'll make beautiful stories.
I know it's hard to keep so many fans satisfied, but trust me, it helps.

Hope I gave you some great advice.

P.S. Never write during midnight. I tried it once and I almost lost conciousness.

3406124 Midnight is the BEST time to write. That's when the imagination comes alive.

I advise you to write what you're most comfortable with. Don't just finish something because you think you have to because as you said, that will just make it a chore, and the story will end up suffering. I ran into a similar issue with one of my fanfics so I put it on hiatus and worked on something else. That helped a lot. The new story, I enjoyed writing a lot more and during that time, I got my inspiration back for my old fanfic and even some ideas on how to better the plot. The less I stressed about it, the better the story got.

Just remember that creative writing is for yourself, the fans come later, so do what YOU want. :raritywink: Also, good luck with Nano!

3406463 The same's for me for the imagination, but writing, nope. I perform better during the day, than during the night, but your times differ from mine, so it's from what perspective you look. Anyway, if you feel to, just keep on writing, on your own pace.

Yours Faithfully,

I'm not that big a fan of vampires but I say go for it! I'm a huge fan of The Princess and The Unicorn. But I know how it feels to be pressured into doing something you lost love in doing. I lost the love in writing my own stories for a couple of years. But I am much better at it now. If you read my stories, people are always begging for more. It drives me crazy. I pause for a moment and ignore the complaints. I suggest you try that.

Follow through with your current inspiration but simply put the other stories on hold, don't abandon them. It can take months to get inspiration and motivation and time back on a story you're losing interest with.

I'm a bit late on this, but... if you're really disappointed with your initial setup for The Princess and the Unicorn, why not start reworking it? Don't scrap your original material, but write it over again, going for a different angle. I had to do the same thing with a fanfic I've been working on for several years, and it's still nowhere near finished.

Happy writing, and I can't wait to read more of your work!

If you're thinking of abandoning a story, than it's probably time to take a break from it until it feels "fresh" again. Seriously, I've just taken an interest in your work, and I would hate to see you cancel a story that looks as interesting as that one. Go ahead and work on this new idea; just don't forget about your older work.

What do you mean by not liking the ships?

I think there where only two? :rainbowhuh:
