053 Annoucing: Arcane Realms update!

Remember that one story about Spike at Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Individuals? There's more to it than just the original chapter, soon to be revealed! Pics or it won't happen, you say? Very well, then!

Yes, you're seeing this right!

The projected word count for a little tale I'd like to share with you really is 12,000 words. I'd like to hear your opinion on such a length, because writing and publishing a chapter that big is a new experience for me. Do you think you can take it in one go (mind you, the chapter is a continuous story with no time jumps, and I guess it's intended to be read as a single thing), or would you like it to be served in two parts? This one can be split into two 6k-ish chapters with a nifty cliffhanger in the middle to make it more edible, but then again, I can't predict the length of the future chapters, or whether they will work in several parts.

Opinions? Or, are you hyped for the next Wednesday? :rainbowwild:

Long chapters are nice so long as the pacing is good

Oh I'm definitely hyped! And long stories are a great read with a nice cup of coffee by your side~

Will be eagerly waiting for it!! :D

A coffee? Nah, I only drink coffee at weddings. A tea (Earl Grey, hot!) on the other hand...

3368835
That shouldn't be a problem. It's long, but it has enough juicy content to keep you guys interested, I hope!

Oooh hot Earl Grey? I like the way you think!

I've always preferred shorter chapters. It's easier to sit down and read if you have things to do. Too long of chapters means you have to make time to read it, which isn't always possible.

Noted, thanks for letting me know how you feel about it!

I agree with the sentiment that I prefer shorter chapters, just because it's easier to divide them up and read in shorter time frames.

That being said, 12k is on the edge of "large, but not too large." I have to devote some significant time to it to get through it, but not so much that I can't fit it in at all and need two reading sessions unless it's the weekend.

3369003 Happy to help. Although, I will also say that if there's not a reasonable place to cut the chapter, don't. It's better to be long than end at an impractical point.

Around 10k is a nice chapter length.

Large, but not overwhelming, gotcha. Thanks for your input!

Yeah, ten thousand words what was I was aiming for with this one, but it sort of grew during editing.

Yes. More long chapters to procrastinate from homework with. :derpytongue2:

I generally prefer chapters of around 3-7k, so splitting this one would be my preference. On the other hoof, it means I could read offline and not miss the whole update.

Disclaimer: the Author takes no responsibility for the Reader's worsening of grades that may or may not occur should he or she read the Story instead of doing his or her homework. The Author will, however, take full responsibility for the Reader's growing knowledge in the area of magic as the characters of the Story participate in Professor Inkwell's Introduction to Spellcasting class et al.

It's not like the story will be taken down an hour after the new chapter lands, so it's not really something you could miss, only read later. But I get your point, thanks for sharing!

Long chapters are nice! And really, 12,000 words is not that huge if it has a lot of good meaty stuff in it and it's not a chapter that just drones on.

Hm. Perhaps I should just publish the whole thing and ask the readers if they felt the chapter was dragging. That's probably the kind of feedback I need to hear about my writing at this point.

Thank you kindly for replying!

Glad I could help!

In the end I've decided not to split the chapter - let's see how it works out here! :raritywink:

THE HYPE IS REAL!!

Where's my goddamn coffee mug?! I gotta read this one!!

3378769 Well, 12,800 isn't too bad. It's settled nicely at the longer end of practical, but still not too long. I'll read it as soon as I glance back over the first chapter for a refresher.
