The Legend of Twilight Princess [spoilers, as if you've managed to avoid them] · 8:49pm Jan 29th, 2013

I have to admit, I'm getting a kick out of seeing all these horrified blog posts pop up.

I myself am dismayed that Twilight will be ascending, purely because in my opinion it shatters the show's social dynamics. Two unicorns, two pegasi, two earth ponies, six (nearly) equal Elements of Harmony. Making one of the unicorns an alicorn tips the balance of power, making it just feel... not right, not Harmonious.

Personally I hold out hope that Twilight will realize she must return to her friends, but it doesn't sound like it'll go that way, judging from Hasbro launching a whole toy line based around alicorn Twilight later this year. So I'll have to take solace in the idea that it'll be fascinating to (presumably) learn more about what makes alicorns tick, and how the show evolves now that Twilight is no longer just a unicorn. I have a hard time seeing her staying in Ponyville, but I also don't see how the show can continue without her there. Perhaps the Princess of Harmony will be allowed to rule from wherever she sees fit.

[EDIT: I'm really digging Kavonde's interpretation of the alicorn news coupled with the existing episode synopsis. I could definitely see the production staff trolling the bronies by announcing Twilight will be ascending, and neglecting to mention that when Twilight fixes the problem-of-the-week, that in turn transforms her back into a unicorn.]

On the subject of fanfiction - I am utterly bewildered by so many fanfic authors taking it like a shot to the gut, or the heart as the case may be. Just because a new episode airs, revealing some part of the canon world you explored in your fic, doesn't mean your fic is now worthless or you should quit. Part of the resiliency of the concept behind fandom fiction is that this ain't LucasArts, where every published work has to go through a vetting process to insure you're not contradicting existing canon. It's speculative fanfic, write whatever you want! If you think I'm rewriting PONY Legacy to make Twilight an alicorn, you've got another thing coming. I don't even care enough to include a throwaway line about Twilight changing her mind and abdicating her powers; I'm just cheerfully ignoring it. Who cares?

Uhhh...from what I heard, Twilight's not gonna be an alicorn princess. I heard it was gonna be the kid of Shining Armor and Cadence.

THIS MAN IS COMPLETELY SANE.

God, I wish there were more people here like you, RBDash.

767222 Well fuck. Look's like I'm wrong.

Well this sucks.

It's weird. Its like the Derpy situation from the mirror universe. I've seen a few fan fictions where Twilight becomes and alicorn and hell, i've seen one where she secretly has been an alicorn since the pilot episode.
I wont say its a good idea entirely, but its interesting.

For the most part, I'm neutral on this situation. I'll just wait until the episode comes out and see what happens. I have certain problems with alicorn Twilight (for example, I fear that this'll just push all the other characters into the background), but I'm not going to go jumping off any bridges.

What I do fear, is for my future fics. Alicorn Twilight simply wouldn't work in most, if not all, of them, and there's nothing that'll make me angrier than if my future fics get rejected by moderation because I didn't slap a pair of wings on Twi (I know I could use the "Alternate Universe" tag, but I look at that as taking the easy way out; I'd prefer keeping that tag off my stuff).

Still, the drama is entertaining, is it not?

767237 Read this. It really isn't that bad if you think like this guy does.

767283 Meh. Still against it.

Cheers, Rust. And check out Kavonde's hypothesis on the topic, I am thoroughly enamored of it.

767249
Interesting, right? I'm pretty curious to see how it all shakes down.

Sorry to be the one to break it to you!

Go read Kavonde's interpretation! I wouldn't be surprised if she's right back in Ponyville where she belongs.

Throw some wings on there, and you got yourself a season finale. :trollestia:

I don't get what the big deal is. There's no indication it's permanent and the writer's aren't dumbasses; they know what they're doing. And come on, do you honestly think this will stop people from writing normal-unicorn Twilight fanfiction? For goodness' sake people, get a hold of yourselves

This, 100%. I don't have problems with alicorn Twilight herself, and I think it would present some interesting new situations*, but I thought the original set up was perfect. I don't want to see the other five lose anything in this, especially Applejack and Pinkie. In fact, I would love love LOVE if the show would use this as a jumping off place for an episode on why earth ponies and special and important and way cooler than other ponies.

* Things the show runners have said about the implications of a title like Princess having to be earned and theoretically maintained. This is interesting and fertile ground for a character on a kids show, and in general.

I'd kill for some good backstory on canon earth pony magic.

I do like McCarthy's take on Princessdom in Equestria being earned, not inherited.

No, see, the prerequisite of a joke is that It'd be funny. This... is not funny!

Realizes you're not joking*

not sure why everyone is making a big deal about. shows changes all the time. just look at Sitcoms.

So... How about Twilight joins the ranks of the alicorns, renounces her Element and S4 will just have the mane 6 leader?
Let's think about it. Who from the unicorns (in order to keep the social balance) that have been introduced in the show could carry the responsibility?

The crazy showmare? She has repented. The local DJ? We don't know shit about her, other than the fact that she can drop some serious base. :rainbowlaugh: Or maybe the human-crazo with some weird sitting habits? She would bring a breath of fresh coloring to the show. :raritywink:

I vote for Trixie. :pinkiehappy:

Then again, who says S4 will even be about mane 6 as we know it? How about S4: The Cutie Mark Chronicles extended? :rainbowkiss:

If it's a problem to be fixed, then explain the Crystal Empire.
I, for one, am excited about this. I think the production team will really pull this off, and we'll all enjoy the next season a lot.

You know what I'm up to.

I'd expect nothing less, my good Doctor.

*Looks at his volunteer schedule.*

*Will, once again, be volunteering that Saturday morning.*

Heh, I'll get back that afternoon and see what I can pull out of the smoking crater that was the fandom.:raritywink:

In my own view, I don't have to like it, but I can handle anything that the writers do to Twilight... as long as Spike goes with her.

Speaking of PONY Legacy, when is the next chapter coming out?

I suspect the fandom will survive somehow. :rainbowwild:

No idea! Faster than the last one did. Maybe a week or two.

this dude gets it.

i personaly dont care, as long as the show is till good and doesnt end in s3 i`ll be happy.
(i know the show has to end sometime, but i cant shake the feeling that this chapter will be a finale of finales, of sorts.)

I see this worry a lot, and I definitely understand where you, and everyone else, is coming from. This was an important thing early in the series, when we were just becoming acquaintanced with the Mane Six and the setting in general. Each pair of ponies displays something interesting about them - Dash and 'Shy being as far from one another as possible while still remaining clearly pegasi; Twilight exemplifying the magical side of unicorns, while Rarity represents their social and noble side; and AJ and Pinkie being orthogonal to one another, different in looks, personality and role while being very similar at the core.

However! We are now approaching the end of S3. We know, and love, this circle of friends as individuals and characters first and foremost. And if Twilight Sparkle turns into an alicorn, it does not mean that the Mane Six is suddenly down a unicorn and needs a replacement. It's one of the characters undergoing a change but remaining the same pony, with the same set of fast friends.

So I think that while this is a totally understandable worry, it's ultimately not a real issue.
