She appeared as if from nowhere, a dark shadowed figure full of dread magic. Shining Armor and Cadance scowled with apprehension, but her attention was on the _other_ shadowy overlord that stood before her. Only one could remain.

Did I misread or did they not tell Umbra the thing they wanted to tell her, namely that she still has feelings for Starlight?
Saying Shining cheated is a bit unfair to him imo.
Guy was brainwashed and his cognitive faculties forcefully altered with malicious intend, and was with someone that was for all intents and purpose looking like his wife, being from a previously unknown race of shapeshifters.
It's kinda like if in our world, you played 20 questions with your lover each time it's sexy time, because you can't know if it's actually really them or if a changeling that belong to folklore replaced them.
Yes, factually he did, but I find them equating what he did to what Umbra did a bit abusive.

A completely valid line of arguments that does little to make someone not feel pretty bad.
Holding that against Shining Armor isn't fair in any kind...

What would be accomplished by bringing it up? The situation is dicey enough without the additional complication.
Besides, it's been not more than a few days; those lingering feelings may not linger for much longer, being leftovers from an exciting but passing fling. If they still linger after a month or more, then maybe that warrants some action, but in the meantime, quiet is the way to go. Even if they knew it was the right move to kindle those embers, it would be unwise to do so with gasoline.

It isn't... but feelings are feelings. Those are rarely rational and fair. *shrug*
To quote the meme:

I have to ask this question before reading. Doesn't this story talk about gender identity?
Simply, this topic is not quite for me.
Umbra really just needs to commit to Shining and Cadance. I honestly think part of it is something she's not wholly aware of in herself. After coming from a society where she was so repressed for her beliefs/feelings, now that she thinks she can be free, she's going overboard with it, venting all that frustration over the repression.
And she does this logically knowing she shouldn't, but does anyhow. Like it hasn't sunk in just how damaging what she's currently doing really is. I mean there's mentally acknowledging something, but not truly grasping it.
As a horrid example, someone who knows they shouldn't drink and drive, but does it anyhow, until they cause an accident involving someone else and the utter horror of what they've been doing FINALLY sinks in. Too little, too late though.
If Umbra keeps going about it the way she has, she's going to end up in the same kind of situation. Do something and its not truly sinking in just how much she fucked up until afterwards. As she's come across thus far, it doesn't feel like she's actually reached that point yet. Very much needs a wake up call.

30% romantic feelings/slice of life, 30% maaagic, 30% adventure! 10% identity.
11452085
Being super dumped by someone she loved a lot isn't a big hit?
Umbra was told about chrysalis and shining thing previously.

Most of David Silvers work have nothing to do with LGBT issues. He is a rather good writer, although I do poke at him on occasion. Like about 2/3 of HIE stories, the mane character becomes female on his arrival. Make no mistake, the reason for this happening in HIE stories isn't gender issues. It's done because the MLP FIM world has a female to male ratio of 4 to 1. It's a simple fact of the MLP universe. I prefer my own characters to maintain their gender, but thats personal preference. While no work of Ernest Hemingway, you wont be wasting your time by reading it. The earlier chapters of the story, involving the rise of the hero protagonist up to the defeat of the Umbrum army is pretty solid work. David seems to be stumbling a bit after that point. I think he is having trouble finding a direction to take the story from there as the last few chapters seem a bit directionless.
Gender issue stories are hit or miss. Many writers use the medium of writing to vent their personal demons and use their stories to vent, but there are writers who actually do write solid and entertaining stories in that line as well. You do yourself a disservice, in refusing to read ANY of them. There are story types here that I am not a big fan of as well, but I would never black list an entire genre just because most writers aren't good at writing it. In doing so, I would miss out on the occasional rare gems.

In chapter 8 the conversation beginning with:

And further:
Then in chapter 10, they have the a similar discussion where they discuss each other's sexuality in a more direct way using terms like 'hetero' and such.
It reads like you wrote one version of this conversation, then decided it fit better elsewhere.

I don't like to get into debates. For this reason, with my traditional views, I adhere to the position of "I don't touch you, you don't touch me."
I do not dispute that there are really well-written works.
Rarely is anything concerning living creatures within the realm of easy.
I'm hoping things between Umbra and Shifting recover at least a bit. The way Umbra handled the thing with Starlight was...
Honestly as if she were drunk or something.
I like how you've handled the subject of polyamory with a maturity you don't see with most other writers.
11452118
Given her attitude thus far? I'm not so sure. And Cadance only mentioned her inexplicable connection to Starlight, not any lingering connection to Shifting. So either she got over Shifting in a real big hurry and is already going after Starlight, or the consequences for her actions are not sinking in truly.

She saw one thread she didn't recognize. That was the start and end.
11453000
Yes, but we don't know what kind of star it was. Regardless, a red giant stage would still fry the planet.
11452082
Why is that an issue?
Why is it wrong to have an open mind to UNDERSTAND what it's like?
11455506
If you didn't want to have a dialogue, you shouldn't have asked questions.
If you wanted to arrange a verbal skirmish in the comments in order to prove something to someone, then I will disappoint you. I have no intention of having a public conversation.
11455571
I asked a question. Simple enough to answer.
11455913
Correction. You asked a provocative question. I do not intend to answer such for the reason stated below.
In addition, I also asked you a question that you did not deign to answer.

You two are lovely ponies, but let's not have a heated discussion of this sort.

but its something Cadance should NOT hold over him.
The second correction can be switched for (and replaced) instead, if so desired.
