10839502 As Shining pointed out in this chapter, at this point he can't trust Cadence. She's shown that she's much more willing to lie and manipulate to get her way than he ever realized that she was capable of, and do so with a straight face and no real tells. If Rarity hadn't had the foresight to record their earlier conversation and share it with Shining, it's quite possible that Cadence's whole act here could have swayed him or at least introduced some doubts as to whether Rarity was lying to make Cadence look unhinged. He no longer feels confident that he can tell when she's lying or hiding something from him, and if they did try getting back together that nagging suspicion that she's merely telling him what he wants to hear and just going behind his back anyway but covering her tracks better, or worse yet cooking up new contingency plans to stop him from ever leaving her, would pretty effectively ruin any relationship they have. That well has been poisoned with these last few stunts she's tried.
Plus, Shining is with Rarity now and they are serious about that relationship, and neither of them seems strongly inclined towards polygamy. Maybe under difference circumstances something could have happened, but the way things are now the chances of that are slim to none. Maybe in a few years if Cadence can regain their trust and get her head straight? Bit of a stretch though.
This chapter does seem to shut down the idea that Cadence is under the influence of Equestrian magic a bit more. There's nothing in this scene that really hints at anything unnatural, just relationship problems, a lack of communication, and Cadence being hurt, desperate to keep Shining, and fixated on the idea that their love was destined. Plus, she's apparently accepted the fact that the relationship is over, and isn't holding on to the delusion that she can somehow still force him to be with her.
10839595 my question was why couldn't it recover is she was being influenced by magic
of course to me, an older guy dating one of his younger sister's friends is pretty off, so them being serious about it... I'm just not sure I buy Shining/Rarity as the future.
10839673 She did it in the name of love, maybe that's why he forgave her, that and years of friendship and love, but that doesn't make what she did right.
Just as he raised his hand to knock on the door, Shining Armor was struck by a sudden rush of unreality. How many times had he stood on this porch, right in front of this door? How often had he reached out a finger to compulsively touch a petal of the daisy mounted on the doorbell (the one that he'd never been able to fix, no matter how many times he'd tried) as though to remind himself of its plasticity, it's unrealness? How could it be that he was standing here now, after everything that had happened, for what would most likely be the very last time?
Oh Shining no, you don't meet your manipulative and dishonest ex alone in her house, that's how fraudulent rape charges get made. Especially with that recording in hand telling him who Cadance is now.
Hopefully he was at least recording the audio of their own conversation if not limited video as well; those two separate conversations with Cadance and the way she lied to him about the first one are air-tight evidence if something happens, while just the first one could be lawyer-ed a bit into circumstantial evidence. Between their shouting likely being heard by neighbors, the damage and broken glass from the picture frames and Cadance's glass, to the current physical state of Cadance, she has enough on hand to spin into a domestic dispute complaint at the least. If she thinks she has nothing left to lose, it could still get worse, but that's going down a darker path.
A sad outcome for Shining and Cadance given what their parallel selves accomplished together, but there really wasn't another way for this to go unless it does turn out that magic is involved. This has been well written overall and I can't wait to see what's left before the completion tag goes up.
Well, I guess that's it, then. No magic, no artifacts; just a woman who suddenly found herself in a position to follow on her impulses, and no plan or idea of how to actually deal with that.
If she had just told Shining at the start what had happened... well, he'd still be feeling inadequate, and maybe the relationship still would've ended, but things wouldn't have progressed to this point. Rarity might've stayed pining from afar, but there would've been significantly less damage and fallout.
Of course, if Shining had told her before all of this how he was feeling, this whole mess could have been averted.
Unfortunately, there is still one more part that was played here, and that was the part of Twilight Sparkle. She holds blame in this as well for one simple reason: She told Cadence that she and Shining were destined to be together. This might seem somewhat inconsequential, but even though Cadence knows that magic is a thing, she knows almost nothing about it. To her eyes, however, Twilight is a wizard, an expert on the subject; if she says they're destined to be together, then they're destined to be together. And that's a big part of why Cadence seemed so cavalier about this whole affair; because she believed, in her hearts of hearts, that no matter what happened, no matter what was said, no matter what she did, Shining would always be with her. Because a wizard told her so.
Twilight did not cause this to happen, but she did set up the dominoes, even if inadvertently, and so here we are at the end of the game; all players lose.
Wow, typical simp shining, taking the blame eagerly when the blame is actually the girl, what low steem, and admiting he would have agreed to a degree to an open relationship, or even an open marriage, you know, women has it easy to get laid, men on the other hand doesn't, and an open relationship is actually a scam, you protect, pay, support, give stability, pay bills rent, stuff dates, vacations, and a lot of etc. while you let your girl/wife fuck other men, the women are given stuff for free, while the idiot boyfriend/husband pays everything and barely gets any action, so he ends up being just her wallet APM, a girl ask for an open narriege/relationship because already cheated and wants to make it official to contenue, but don't want the man to cheat, if they let him cheat, afterwards they hate it and want to close it again; this fic show a simp but lucky shining armor, and an actual real life woman behavior in Cadance, I give credit to the author for getting that prat right, though shining still is the same simp as before just with a better young unicorn woman.
10839673 He actually should have shown That audio to twilight paRents, to cadance parents, and some close friends, things like that in real life, are not forgiven, a girl getting away with that will do stuff like that again, because she knows she can get away with it, learning that actions have concecuences is important.
10840455 Why the condescending tone dude, I just stated some facts, and prised the story for representing better how modern relationships are nowadays.
Man the feels are so damn strong, I’m hoping Cadance will finale leave them along and get her shit together. Also hope to see more of Rarity’s and Shining’s relationship go forward
should point out twiligth and cadence relationship shouldn't be okay after this point either, twilight probably isn't gonna want to see her for a while.
sublime but I still have a small doubt, it is rainbow, she is involved in a certain way and I still have the doubt that will happen when it is known that she knew and more what was the deal so that she did not say anything
Just finished catching up on this one & goddamn it's good. Really love how you show that both Shining & Cadence messed up even if I think Cadence did a worse thing. The fact neither side is blameless really adds to the punches.
Shining Armor's smile was pitying, his eyes sad, as he held aloft the digital voice recorder he'd pulled from his pocket. "We would probably have to move as far away as possible. Somewhere no one could possibly know about his... transgressions.” The voice of past Cadance said from the small black rectangle. “Far away from the judgmental stares, the broken public trust... Far away from you." He hit the STOP button and lowered his arm. "Rarity's a lot smarter than you or I give her credit for. This was in her purse the whole time."

See?
TOLD YOU!
Fucking record EVERYTHING in this society of today!
Oof.
Really, this was the best way it could have gone. That's a horrible shame, but... yeah. That Monroe quote is rather appropriate.
I really think Cadence got off easy.
She basically threatened to destroy his life and then lied about it.
He should've just stormed away from her after that.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Incomplete? More chapters planned?
I'm not crying! You're crying!! No seriously that really was powerful. Damn bravo!!!
I must say this is by far currently one of my favorite stories, and the writing for Rarity is easily the best done I've seen in a long long while.
