Twilight You have to except that ponies will do things differently then by the book if they can profit in some way from it
9332855 She's a younger filly here, and has a bit more growing and learning about the world to do.
9332872
fair enough but I would still like to see her answer if possible
If Twilight is having fun with 2 coordinate complex numbers, just what will be the look on her face when she realises the 8 coordinate complex numbers called octonions, if displayed on a 2D surface, look remarkably like the symbol for Chaos.
I thought if Lyra was doing a personal rotation during translation she was already using at least Euler complex planar cos otherwise she would be using quaterions?
9332889 The method Lyra's using here is simple (hee) polar coordinates. It is simple math, without a doubt, but she has to do it in her head—as she's about to teleport. There's a reason we don't see many ponies making extensive use of teleport self spells.
9332919
Was already thinking Polar was more efficient when Twilight was talking about it. At least from the "self-teleport" point of view.
I'm thinking in terms of magical or mathematical discovery, the "teleport object" spell was discovered first, and either the Cartesian-equivalent coordinate system was discovered first and was more suited for this, or it was even developed simultaneously.
It probably took an extraordinarily crazy mage to attempt the teleport spell on themselves, and probably used the existing spell as a basis.
All speculation, of course, since I'm going off of your story's canon.
9333332 Right, but the polar method is using vectors, which don't work when you have to travel through something. That's why the complex number coordinate system is superior, it is a more literal point-to-point TP.
9333335
Yep. Everything is relative.
9333349 Heh, ultimately, this shows just how good with math Twilight really is. Consider the scene where she's dancing, singing, and doing frequent teleport hops. She could just be using Lyra's trick, but I highly suspect she enjoys doing complex math in her head.
9333365
That's exactly what I always thought. It wasn't that Twilight was more powerful than, say, Trixie, but that she just liked the math so much it became second nature.
If learning teleporting means having to learn quantum physics, I'd rather learn something else.
9333621 No quantum physics needed at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure that would be right over Lyra's head.
9333659 You still need to know math to know how to teleport, fly or even do weather work. If magic was hard from all the theory, then math pretty much made it even harder!
9333667 You don't need to know HOW to do those specific things, you only need to memorize the weave for doing so. Teleportation is tricky because there are coordinates or vectors involved.
This was another nice chapter a week before I expected but that's only good. I am looking forward towards Lyra's and Sweetie's date.
I also found a few errors:
It should say like intead of link and at one point it says here name instead of her name.
The lesson about teleportation was nice too and it's good to see the other unicorns in the class.
9333679 Thanks for the fixes—pretty sure I got them all. A lot of stories/bronies seem to forget that although Twilight was Celestia's special student, there were others in her class. Was Celestia just hedging her bets, or was this a common thing? Sunset seems to imply this was more common.
9333704
The fact that Celestia refers to Sunburst as one of her students supports the idea that it was common.
9333708 Sunset, and I'll have to do one last bit of research on that as to how it is going to affect things.
9333710
I ws referring to S06E02 The Crystalling where Celestia refers to Sunburst as one of her Students. I assume she gave lessons to classes of her school from time to time separate from what Twilight and Sunset received.
9333715 Ah! Research done btw. There is no reference that Sunset was a special student like Twilight is. Celestia just called her "a former student of mine".
Hehe, Lyra gets flushed!
Twilight, you're cute in that box of thought, but eventually you'll need to slide out of it.
It's also practical to know when precision and accuracy come into play, and proper usage of significant figures (and the significance of each, heh). If you can perform guesstimations extremely fast (and the decrease in precision isn't too bad), you can get away with fudge numbers quite often. It's all about optimizing.
Keep going! ;)

Not seeing any questions on this one. Does nopony have a question for anypony?
First to post one (replying to this) in the next 8 hours will get theirs answered.
9356034
Celestia how would Luna react to the bat ponies
9356034
Uh, yeah, hmmm, I guess I didn't have a question. Odd...

To Tufts:
What is your opinion on tomatoes? Biologically, they are a fruit.
The unicorn knows where she is because she knows where she isn't. In determining where she will be, she subtracts where she was from where she is, and differentiating the inverse square of the energy didn't traveling to where she is now. Taking the integral of the difference she will know how much farther she can become distanced from where she was in comparison to where she is now in accordance to the energy spent, and can then determine what amount of energy is needed to maximally become where she wants to be from where she was and now is.
11756033 Hrmm, I wonder if it works like datetime objects in Python? Subtracting one datetime object from another yields a timedelta object.
