Haha poor Twilight. She's doing quite well hearing the information, but it seems as if the consumption thereof hasn't quite taken hold. She's not quite to the point of stating ludicrous claims in a gambit to call them out yet at least.
Maybe Upper will finally get to use those wings after all this time?
Cementing a continuous trade of intellectual knowledge via an apprenticeship is a stroke of accidental genius.
Keep going! ;)
Well this is going a lot better then what I had hope and skipped out on most of the panic that I was expecting from this. Still, I think
For the PONI's part I suspect that that they might have trouble understanding some of the ponies cultural sensibilities and well as some what could be considered culturally acceptable, or take for granted that ponies will understand their well meaning intentions, would seem hostile or invasive to them. I know that Jetset and Upper Crust would already intuitively know those unspoken rule but their foals don't. I suspect that that the PONI foals will have trouble relating or understanding ponies as they are far removed from their cultures and technologist. Still, It was fun to see Twilight flabbergasted at at their statement, and I wonder if ponies will feel that they have fallen into stagnation during all those centuries and might start to question why their rulers haven't strive to do as much.
8721693 They're still metal wings, and she still weighs enough that jumping up and down on the ground is a sinking experience. She would likely need quite a bit of speed to actually use them.
8721706 To be fair, Twilight and her friends have had a little bit more experience with everything than they do in the show we all know and love. Admittedly making contact with aliens is a new one for them, but it's not so far removed from dealing with foreign critters from Equus, although the time it takes them to communicate back to their "homeland" will be a little bit longer.
8721774
But.... But........ Magic!
8721779 To be fair, she probably just needs a few thousand pounds of thrust.
Seeing the apprenticeship from the point of view of both the teacher and the student would be an interesting thing, and possibly a nice slice of life fic in and of itself in my opinion.
There is so many interesting... things...that could happen.
Also, I kind of want a conversation between Twilight and Bright Hope now
8721876 Considering Bright Hope is literally a princess of teleportation? Yeah, I think Twilight would squee at the chance to meet her (and I am sure 400 years of life would have diminished Twilight's excitement at such things not a jot).
In most situations, saying this about a girl would be a great way to get yourself murdered.
8721998 Murdered, or crushed into the physical size of something significantly smaller than said moon. Bright Hope, however, has no defense.
Create a lovely holographic dance

Well it would be more like 800 years, since Oxy probably diesn’t have any life support systems.
8722525 Nope! None at all! Oxy's hull vents to vacuum. There is literally no reason to have a pressurized hull, and every reason to avoid one.
8722529
Fun fact i recently learned: there are GPS satalites up there with pressurized hulls. ^^
8722577 PONI are more resistant to the rigors of space than your puny electronics!
How many (b/m)illions are there already?
8723290 By my calculations, about 5b PONI.
Phew, so far so good. Twilight is taking the whole just-a-brain thing better than I thought she would. But I hope someone tells Pinkie that PONI don't have digestive systems before she throws them a surprise party. She'll be so sad if she bakes a bunch of cakes for them and they 'refuse' to take even a single bite...

I had that nagging feeling, that something missing here... and SUDDENLY got it: they heard ponies on the first contact. But, along with speech, why do they even need hearing? They communicate through wireless connection, there are plenty of sensors that can provide all necessary information much faster than any sound can, and there are nothing to hear in space anyway. So how do they heard ponies? Or how it happens, that they keeping devices, that can register sound, but not bothering with devices, that can provide sound?
8724659 They actually discussed, in an earlier chapter, the types of sensors they wanted on new chassis: audio pickups were one. There is a lot more than just speech that is good to hear. Metal-stress, escaping gas/fluid, etc. Hearing is a great near-area hazard warning.
And only place you need those - "living quarters" for PON (and only because organics quite badly tolerates direct exposure to vacuum and extreme temperatures). All other places does not even have to be airtight, isn't it? Therefore there are a total lack of medium to transfer any sound. And escaping gases/fluids are long ago being detected by different kinds of pressure sensors even here, in "retarded" human society. Simply because it's easier and faster to detect.
8724736 Also any operating areas. It would be a bad idea to have those exposed to hard vacuum all the time. In the end, I imagine they would just fill most of the PONI living spaces with an inert, noble gas (helium would be a good one, since they would be harvesting plenty of that from the stars).
Also, there is still a medium for sound to travel through, their chassis, and the chassis of the sphere they are in.
u know, i had a thought...PONI communicate much like the Geth from the Mass Effect universe. that is to say, speed of light data transfer, with the only Geth actually able to speak a human language (due to their hardware being purpose designed to not only carry and support over a thousand Geth programs but also to find and support 'Shepard-Commander') being Legion
8726494 Interesting. I haven't played those games, although I did see this species used in a story on FA (by an artist named Croft) called Change in Perspective.
The difference I see from these machines and the geth are that the geth are interested in the goings on of organics, up until they found ponies (specifically unicorns), the machines weren't.
As for speed of light comms, the machines use gravitational pulses for long range transmissions, but wide-band EM spectrum is perfectly fine for close-range.
8726589
im not sure exactly how the Geth communicate with each other, although it can be assumed that Mass Effect technology is involved. if u get the chance, play the games, they r totally worth it...until the end of ME3 at least...
8726621 What "lies" does the game use? FTL? Magic? I have tried to keep mine to just the ones already established in the show.
8726627
Mass Effect is caused by the substance 'Element Zero', and is basically used to manipulate gravity. applying a negative electrical charge to eezo negates gravity, while a positive charge increases gravity. that being said, the science is...actually sound, when using dark matter and dark energy. it gets really technical and i dont fully understand the science, but it apparently works. also, Geth communication is never explained in game, merely alluded to. what is said about the Geth is that the more of them there r in an area, the smarter they all become, one reason their creators, the Quarians, went to war with the Geth.
the Geth were created to do repetitive or dangerous manual labour, but as their intelligence increased as more and more Geth were brought online, they began asking questions. the most important question is what triggered the war: "does this unit possess a soul?" many of the Quarians panicked, determining that he Geth were growing much to dangerous to remain online, they launched a preemptive strike, attempting to end the war before it began. they failed, and now, three hundred (in game) years after that war, the Quarian people remain without a home, the Migrant Fleet wanders the stars, gathering and reusing everything they can find or purchase, not that many governments r happy to see the Fleet enter their systems. and the Geth remain behind the Perseus Vail, silent, watchful, unmoving...until the events of Mass Effect 1
8726789 Heh, Element Zero sounds a lot like Phlebotinum to me.
This story deals with just one Lie (although it's a big one, not a little one), magic exists. I have, however, put physics behind it to some extent: magic still obeys thermodynamics just fine, however it is capable of things that defy what physics we know of allow (hence it being a Lie). I have other sci-fi settings with much softer (lower Mohs scale) science than this.
With The Process, I will be clinging to a Mohs scale 4 as tightly as I can.
8726804
i wouldnt be able to say with any kind of certainty, im just telling u what was in the games. go looking into the deeper lore and im sure u could find more on the Geth and how they function, i havent done that. still, i only brought it up since the machine interrupt communication reminded me of the Geth and how they prefer to communicate
This is the content I've been desiring since halfway through and yet it's a chapter from done :/

Sorry, but Twilight's going to need a few cycles for defragging.
