so many possibilities~
what would happen if the machine empire was destroyed?
gosh rebuilding the machine empire would be interesting x3
i think i'm enjoying reading this way too much XD looking forward to next chapter
8610380 The question everyone is likely pondering: Who made them in the first place?
8610385 Good to hear!
Well this answers my primary question on how long the trip it would take to arrive to destination, and how they would expect to survive and be serviceable until then. What I would wonder is are their brains will survive the test of time, along with their reproductive organs, they aren't meant to last that long after all, and I am not sure that they have enough of their old body to produce more stem cells to replace the old cells of their brains, unless the nanits create those for them replace them with synfetic material that can last much longer, and seeing that it takes ten years cycle to replace every cells in ah human brain it would mean that they will be completely symmetric long before the time they arrive. It looks like they are both seem to be easily shading off their previous existent as ponies and just accept their new condign and looking forward to it, by the time they will arrive there they will be completely accustomed to think in the AGI way of thinking and will have very little in common with their previous pony selves.
Hehe, reality hits you hard, bro.
Once they reach coasting speed, they'll be free to move about the cabin?
Plenty of time to investigate Magic, and convert their neural network into a better systems-compatible model. But then, will that break their access to magic in and of itself? It's too bad they never got a chance to retrieve any documentation. But then, we wouldn't expect that kind of foresight from a mining AI...
Keep going! ;)
8610427 As I pointed out before, brain cells don't just die. I am not sure what you mean by "takes ten years to replace" them. Brain cells are never replaced. There are stem cells producing new brain cells, but at a very small rate.
Their reproductive organs are another issue, and are going to be dealt with very differently to brains.
8610457 Cabin? You assume this ship was designed for passengers who aren't digitally stored? They are inside retrofit closets.

Yes, it was a joke referencing contemporary air travel.
8610465 Heh, well technically the PONI could have been attached externally, but that would have made the ship's profile larger, and it is already hard enough to protect at .5c without adding "stop PONI from being scraped off by random atom collisions" to the problem.
Well, that certainly covered my questions. I liked your description of the communications system. I could be wrong but I'm fairly certain that gravitational waves will still be limited to light speed. So, I have to wonder why it sent the message. Star-0 won't recieve it for 150 years. So, by the time AGI gets a response they'll be roughly two thirds the way there. Why doesn't AGI just wait until it arrives?
8610903 In case there is a problem on the way. And yes, gravitational waves are limited to light speed, but they ALWAYS travel at light speed.
8610983 True, but so do radio waves. Though you might be right about gravitational waves being less prone to interference. Although I would have thought an asteroid or other body of matter could disrupt it with it's own gravitational field, but maybe not.
8611036 I just double checked (from a LIGO researcher's AMA), and gravitational waves are not affected by matter at all. They propagate at (as has been determined just recently) the speed of light, and only distance reduces them in any way. They are quite literally the BEST communications method that exists (assuming you can generate them).
8611082 Neat. I had another thought. If AGI sent a copy of itself back home, what happens when the ship gets there? There will be two AGI's. Both technically the same being but seperate. Do they both get to live or does one have to be deleted.
8611161 You might have to wait for next week to find out!
Wow.
RIP literally 99.999999999% of the ponies we know and love.
