Do the PON/PONIs need more genetic diversity? They can't keep making organic pony foals who will become PONIs just from Jet Set and Upper Crust, can they? Eventually organic parts do wear out, unless the AGIs have ways of super preservation.

Well, they still have stem cells from both Jet Set and Upper Crust. This means they have a functioning base template of both PON's genes. Their digital storage should decay much slower than the genes themselves, however creating a digital copy of a genome, and then geneprinting it later is not impossible. This way, unless the journey from #EQUUS to #STAR-1 did significant damage to either one's genes, any faulty genes can be replaced with a printed copy of the original, preserved in digital storage.
8677837 The only cells retained when a PON transitions to PONI is the brain. Brain cells do not die due to age. Genetic diversity would be good, but is not required if recessive traits are kept from becoming a problem through genetic engineering.
Actually, I just noticed something. When the AGIs experimented with artificial horns, how much of #STAR-1s processing power had to be dedicated to a single 1 to keep it stable?
Since both artificial and organic horns are comparable in terms of processing requirements for stability(as proven by Jet temporarily controlling an artificial horn while Aggie controlled Jet's organic horn), this would give the AGIs an estimate as for how much processing power each organic processing node has minimum(even if not all is accessible to the PON-Intelligence)[or that each organic processing node has specialized hardware that is optimized for horn-stabilization, but useless for other tasks].
In case 1, it likely demonstrates that each organic processing node is orders of magnitude more efficient(in both calculations/time and energy/calculation) than each artificial processing node.
In case 2, it demonstrates that the machines could design specialized circuitry for artificial horn stabilization, greatly cutting down processing requirements.
8677874 Their sphere is part of a Dyson swarm around Star-0, and it took about 10% of the processing power of one sphere just to handle one horn. The reason PON/PONI are able to do it with much less is their brains have insight into the dark energy being contained, basically they have a predictive model the AI are unable to build.
At the present time it is much more efficient to have a PONI than to dedicate 10% of your sphere's processing to managing power storage in such a way that if the processing fails, the sphere would likely be destroyed.
Soon, ship teleportation~

So the PON's have never used magic themselves the whole time? That's a surprise. Nice to see that they probably outnumber even the current population of ponies on Equus and I are plainging to do a visit, can't wait to see the reception there, I am guessing that they will take like something like this: 'We are the PONI, resistance is futile, you will be assimilated, your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own.' I wonder why Crust's body actually transformed in shape while it isn't even her orignal body?
8678405 They haven't. For their time as PON their horns are conditioned with a locked-on interface. They are taught how to do telekinesis, but that is it. As for Upper Crust's body changing... magic!
I love everything about this story.

8678532 Thanks!
It's fortunate they haven't forgotten actual spellcrafting. There are so many more possibilities than mere telekinesis and energy transfer! We'd imagine that even so, AGIs still wouldn't be able to process well enough to do it themselves...
Keep going! ;)
8678751 What makes you think Upper Crust and Jet Set ever studied spellcrafting? They know a spell or two, but that is their limit.
8678806
We meant more that research wasn't devoted to improving that field of knowledge, since surely they knew things were possible, it should have triggered some interest at least.
8678824 Ah, indeed. It was disregarded because they had lost it at first. Out of sight; out of mind.
Maybe, there are PONI-2, not PONI-3?
Also, where are they getting all of proteins, carbohydrates and/or other organic materials to grow that army of foals? Simply mashing together carbon, oxygen, hydrogen,...? Well, then with such advanced technology for building organics - why grow bodies (fully, I mean)? Just build one or two to extract bone marrow, then just clone it for producing any necessary amount of stem cells to feed growing "organic nodes".
8680066 Making basic protein/fats/sugars is not an overly complex process. Making a body is a whole other order of business. The PON are grown in bags and fed power (for their temporary implants) and whatever basic substances are needed to grow (mostly fats and protein). The process used will not support them full time, their bodies would likely start to have malnutrition issues were they to reach full adulthood, but for the purposes of growing a brain they serve amply.
That's exactly my point. Why not discarding body on early stages?
I am aware of their names, but it was Bright Hope, that was excited about interstellar adventures, isn't it? Besides, there is "she", not "he" in that particular part. So, there is a mistake, one way or another :3
8680861 Ack, you're right! Thanks for poking me about it. As for the body, they keep it around until the brain has reached what is essentially its adult level of growth. There are still neurons to grow, but its size is comparable to an adult's.
A family of seventy-billion plus. The family reunions are going to be Crazy.
9016892 The family reunions are going to require gravitational calculations to balance: some of those PONI are now starships.
Woof
(d'awww cute light spell reactions. also: alicorns as complex spell conduits and/or permissions granters?)
9239975 The spells we see ponies using (transformation, teleportation) need some heavy lifting done by someone. In the case of transformation, consider how complex a living being is. So yes, alicorns do the complex stuff, and can mentally limit what work they are willing to permit.
