When two humans land on a planet with their shell-person companion at the helm, they think they are prepared for anything. Ponies was not among their definition of "anything," however.
8162181 It is a bone that is part of your skull, just behind and below your ear. Very conveniently placed and positioned to have a surgical implant attached to it.
Not just any irradiated asteroid, Magic asteroids! So we have confirmation Twilight was totally hitting on her, but from the sounds of it maybe that's just culture? To Luna: isn't the night sky so wonderful? Keep going! ;)
I will admit, FSP, wasn't my favorite series(I suppose technically Pern takes place there, but I think only Dragonsdawn and maybe one or two other short stories/novels deal with the FSP, so I'm not counting it.) by my favorite auther, merely because Talents and Pern so engrossed me!(How can you not like telepathic dragons and talking dolphins? HOW?!?!)
But the concept gets an immediate like from me, and sorely tempted to favorite even without reading the first chapter, because I love the concept so! That said, I don't recall the name 'Keira'(been a decade, so..) so is that the OC in the tag?
Anne McCaffery was one of my favorite authors growing up. Wait no, she WAS my favorite author, the only one I remember reading books and series just because she wrote them!
8191712 Kiera, Dustin, and Belay are all OCs in this. Their ship designation is the KDB-1329, so a good few after the novels. Kiera has reached her payoff, and is on contract with E&E Corps. She took on her brawn (Dustin y Neil; fairly small high-family, and he isn't particularly high within it), and her brawn's partner, Belay. Dust and Belay aren't in a romantic relationship anymore, but are still good friends with each other and Kiera.
8191782 So she has TWO Brawns? Or just one, and technically-maybe-if-she-asks-nicely a half? I'm fuzzy on the particulars, but I thouht it required a LOT of training to become a brawn, so a Shellperson getting two...OTOH maybe shellpeople are rarer or certain mission get 2 thanks to previous mishaps?
8192134 She is out of contract, so she could sign up whoever she wanted. She kept on her brawn (Dustin) from when she was under contract, and took on Belay later. Background for Belay has her as completing a good chunk of her brawn training, but she is not a fully qualified brawn.
i read some other books...not by Anne McCaffrey, or maybe partly by her...anyway, a clever Brainship invented a robot body, remotely controlled by the "brain", that could do anything a human body could do...including sex. yeas, the scone thing she did with it was to have sex with her "brawn". the first thing she did was to hug her teddy bear!
8575682 Yup! That was a co-author by Anne McCaffrey. The brainship in that case had been interred into the shellperson program at quite an advanced age (12 I think?) and she already had a lot of the neural programming needed to walk and such. The body she had made was expensive, and technically not her own. She purchased controlling shares in the company who could make them, and reported to them that she would be willing to "test" one out. In the end such bodies would cost as much as a full ship to make, and hence not be a viable thing for all shellpeople to invest in.
Good.... Goood

Wow, so the other side of their planet is... well, basically a non-biosphere? Yikes...!
8159782 Blasted constantly by radiation from their star, yes.
I still don't understand why TwiV is so eager. What about her husband?
And what is a mastoid? My iPad dictionary only came up with mastoid disease.
