When two humans land on a planet with their shell-person companion at the helm, they think they are prepared for anything. Ponies was not among their definition of "anything," however.
The daily story ends, how long before the next ship arrives, through exploration, search, interception of the signal through expanded relay space, etc, to finally register the metamorphosis of the lost ship, maybe meet new freinds in their tin can hanging above the world, maybe even find out that the Pie family have a remarkable range of FTL communication crystals just ready to go to market, because, you know, Suprise?
9117067 You think Pie crystals will be better than those from Ballybran? 9117102
Hrmm, gives me an idea for a sequel. What if Ballybran used to be a system with a magitar nearby. The crystals have long since stopped receiving a magic field, but have developed the ability to create their own. The symbiote that lives there needs that field regularly to survive. Hence why singers need to keep returning.
This all fits, and explains some of the crazy uses for Ballybran crystal.
There is a whole bunch of really weird true articles that you could put together if you wanted that go all about power of crystals but which are far more complex and expansive than hippies manage to get their head round.
I just wish I could have the collection of links saved and available, but four dimentional fractally interpenetrating pseudoregular liquid crystal is just the start of it. Which is why the Pies. Ballybran is a resting world, new crystals have the chance to form, through hydrothermal, magmatic and deposition event on a geological scale, but Pinkie and Family are up there with being able to grow to order Crystals on the class of Ulru Ujurr. Crystal Singers are sculptors, they work with whats given them. Pie R Square, Farmers. They create and grow from nothing but hardwork and the world.
9117187 Right, but unless any such articles can prove crystals can produce more energy than is put into them, or that they can be in a kind of normal-space superposition despite being hundreds of lightyears apart, I doubt they're going to come close to the "magic" of Ballybran crystals.
The communication thing might be covered by something about Diamonds being used to hold ions that are placed into superposition, so both are in linked states all the time, and quntum peeking allows you to not only read teh state but reset disturbance caused by teh observation before decoherence occurs.
The excess energy is tricker as Casimir, Zero Point Energy has been measured but as yet Ive seen nothing about even pulling microwatts out for ultra low level digital clocks etc. Then again, a Casimir generator the size of a sugar cube that generated a thousandth of a watt, when banked together, is a kilowatt in a cubic metre. All the time. Lots of cubic metres in homes and factories etc.
9117701 I don't think you're getting it. Those books were space-opera. I had more science-fact in this story than all Anne's works put together. She told stories about characters in space, not technology.
Just to note: there is an epilogue coming, but this story is otherwise complete.
Well I am sorry it's over, but I look forward to the epilogue. A fine story and you do McCaffrey's world well. Thanks for the entertainment!

I feel it'll have a sequel.

Sorry about that. shows just how bad I am as writing stories when I cant even make a technical manul look realistic.
Well it's a good thing she decided to stabilize after that snap.
It's been fun!
