Chapter 19: Beatdown

“They’ve got thirty seconds!” called the announcer. The announcer didn’t need to worry, seeing as Alex and Rainbow Dash would easily make it in time. The two ran on the stage on time.

“Well,” the announcer continued, “the two duelists looked to have made it. Now we can begin this. Alex, Rainbow Dash, take it away!”

Alex couldn’t help but feel shaken up about Claude’s failure to stop Kyle, but he knew that to continue one would not only be what Claude wanted, but it was in his and everyone’s best intentions to continue. Alex and the others could have easily forfeited the tournament, but such an act of cowardice would only fuel Kyle’s rage and have him attack each of the stone bearers (and perhaps the ponies or even his family) individually. There was no hiding; a duel with Kyle was all but inevitable.

“Alex,” said Rainbow Dash, “one of us is probably going to meet Kyle up at the top. Who do you think it’s going to be?”

“If you really want to know, I believe it shall be me.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Kyle and I have dueled before. I know his deck. I feel like the experience that I’ve had dueling him more than qualifies me to face him again.”

“Baloney! I watched Kyle’s duel with Claude. I know his deck too.”

“Not like I do Rainbow."

“What?”

“There are things in this world, Rainbow, that cannot be learned through observations. Dueling is one of those things. It’s one thing to watch as your friend gets attacked by a monster, but it’s an entirely different feeling to be attacked by the same monster. You experience different things that you wouldn’t feel otherwise: fear, anxiety, and in some cases, like when I lost to Kyle the first time, hopelessness.”

“Woah…” said Rainbow, taken aback by Alex’s explanation. She shook her head as if trying to keep from being swayed by Alex’s words. “Listen you, I’m just as capable of defeating Kyle as you are. If not…” she smiled at the following word, “…more.”

“Challenge accepted,” Alex simply responded. Alex constructed his D-Pad onto his arm, leading Rainbow Dash to do the same. Both of their duel disks unsheathed.

“Duel detected,” said a voice over the intercom. “Initializing holographic imaging sequence.” A transparent aura enveloped the entire area. Alex and Rainbow Dash drew five cards from their decks.

“DUEL!” they both yelled.

Alex vs. Rainbow Dash

Alex’s Turn: Alex normal summons Hieratic Dragon of Eset with no tributes (ATK: 1900 DEF: 1200). Because Alex normal summoned Hieratic Dragon of Eset with no tributes, its original ATK become 1000 (ATK: 1900 -> 1000). Alex then tributes Hieratic Dragon of Eset to special summon Hieratic Dragon of Su (ATK: 2200 DEF: 1000). When Hieratic Dragon of Eset is tributed, Alex can special summon a Dragon-type normal monster from his deck and make its ATK and DEF 0, choosing Hieratic Seal of the Sun Dragon Overlord (ATK: 0 DEF: 0). Next, Alex activates Monster Reborn, special summoning Hieratic Dragon of Eset from his graveyard.

Alex activates Hieratic Dragon of Eset’s effect. Once per turn, Alex can make the levels of all Hieratic monsters currently on the field the same level as a Dragon-type normal monster on the field, choosing Hieratic Seal of the Sun Dragon Overlord (Lvl.: 5 -> 8) (Lvl.: 6 -> 8). Alex overlays Hieratic Dragon of Eset and Hieratic Seal of the Sun Dragon Overlord to xyz summon Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis (ATK: 3000 DEF: 2400).

During the end phase, the levels of all monsters on the field return to normal (Lvl.: 8 -> 6).

Alex places one card face down and ends his turn.

Rainbow Dash’s Turn: Rainbow Dash summons T.G. Rush Rhino (ATK: 1600 DEF: 800). When she controls a T.G. monster, Rainbow Dash can special summon T.G. Gear Zombie from her hand (ATK: 600 DEF: 0). Rainbow Dash tunes T.G. Rush Rhino with T.G. Gear Zombie to synchro summon T.G. Power Gladiator (ATK: 2300 DEF: 1000).

Rainbow Dash attacks Hieratic Dragon of Su with T.G. Power Gladiator.

Alex, from his angle, could perfectly see Kyle walk from the west to one of the eight seats for the finalists. Kyle gave Alex and Rainbow Dash his trademark smirk, and revealed Ruby Phoenix for him to see, giggling as he did so.

“Who knew such a brute like Claude could be so generous?” said Kyle.

Alex and Rainbow Dash were seething with rage.

“YOU BASTARD!” yelled Alex, shocking some of the crowd.

Alex’s Turn: Alex activates Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis’ effect. By detaching one xyz material from it, Alex can tribute monster cards from his hand and destroy that many cards on the field. Alex tributes a monster in his hand to destroy one of Rainbow Dash’s face down cards. Alex then special summons Hieratic Dragon of Asar by removing a LIGHT attribute Dragon-type monster and a Dragon-type normal monster in his graveyard from play (ATK: 2600 DEF: 700).

Next, Alex activates his trap Immortal Dragon, special summoning Dragunity Arma Mystletainn from his graveyard (ATK: 2100 DEF: 1500). Alex then activates Star Changer, reducing the level of Hieratic Dragon of Asar by one (Lvl.: 7 -> 6). Alex overlays Hieratic Dragon of Asar and Dragunity Arma Mystletainn to xyz summon Jade Wyvern (ATK: 2500 DEF: 2100).

Alex attacks T.G. Power Gladiator with Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis, but Rainbow Dash activates Defense Draw, reducing the battle damage to 0 and drawing one card. Also, when T.G. Power Gladiator is destroyed, Rainbow Dash draws one card.

Alex attacks Rainbow Dash directly with Jade Wyvern.

Alex ends his turn.

“Rainbow!” called Applejack.

“Guys!” she responded. “How’s Claude?”

“Alive, but we had to get him an ambulance.”

Kyle couldn’t help but giggle at Applejack’s final word. This only brought Rainbow’s rage to boiling point.

Warwolf, as she special summoned a level 4 or lower monster (ATK: 1200 DEF: 0). Rainbow Dash then activates her own Monster Reborn, special summoning T.G. Power Gladiator from her graveyard. Rainbow Dash tunes T.G. Warwolf with T.G. Striker to synchro summon T.G. Wonder Magician (ATK: 1900 DEF: 0).

Rainbow Dash flew up towards the sky and nosedived again, her monsters close behind.

“I tune my level 5 Tech Genus Power Gladiator with my level 5 Tech Genus T.G. Wonder Magician.”

Her trailing cone appeared before her.

“Accel synchro!”

She burst through the cone, doing a Buccaneer Blaze, resulting in her ace monster appearing close behind. The crowd on the hill cheered at this, along with the ponies in Equestria.

“Go! Tech Genus Blade Blaster!”

Battle damage is applied normally.

Is this pegasus really about to corner my biggest threat right now? Not that it matters. As long as she doesn’t control a Stone of Equus, she’s nothing more than an ant under my boot.

Catapult Dragon’s effect, special summoning a level 3 or lower T.G. tuner monster from her hand, choosing T.G. Jet Falcon (ATK: 1400 DEF: 1200). Rainbow Dash special summons another T.G. Warwolf from her hand with its effect. Rainbow Dash tunes T.G. Catapult Dragon and T.G. Jet Falcon to synchro summon T.G. Hyper Librarian. When T.G. Jet Falcon is sent to the graveyard for a synchro summon, she can inflict 500 points of damage to Alex.

Rainbow Dash then equips T.G. Blade Blaster with 7 Completed, increasing its ATK by 700 (ATK: 3300 -> 4000).

Rainbow Dash attacks Jade Wyvern with T.G. Blade Blaster, but Alex activates Jade Wyvern’s effect, detaching an xyz material from it to prevent a monster’s destruction by battle, choosing Jade Wyvern. Battle damage is still applied.

Alex only looked to Kyle, who smiled at him mockingly, as if to make fun of the fact that he was being devastated by a pegasus who suddenly began to dominate him.

Alex then activates Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis’ effect, detaching an xyz material from it to tribute monsters on his field and then destroy and equal amount of cards on the field, tributing Dragunity Tribus to destroy T.G. Blade Blaster, but Rainbow Dash activates T.G. Blade Blaster's effect, banishing a T.G. monster in her graveyard to banish T.G. Blade Blaster until the end phase.

Alex attacks T.G. Hyper Librarian with Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis.

Rainbow Dash attacks Jade Wyvern with T.G. Blade Blaster, but Alex activates Shift, switching the target to Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis.

Alex’s Life Points: 1100 -> 800

Alex then activates Trap Reborn, halving his life points to activate a trap card from his opponent’s graveyard, choosing Rainbow Dash’s Card of Last Will, drawing five cards when a monster he controls is destroyed by battle.

Alex’s Life Points: 800 -> 400

Rainbow Dash sets one monster.

Rainbow Dash places one card face down and ends her turn.

All eyes were on Alex now. Could he issue a comeback?

Alex’s Turn: Alex activates Lightning Vortex, discarding one card to destroy all face up monsters Rainbow Dash controls. Before it’s destroyed, Rainbow Dash activates T.G. Blade Blaster’s effect. By banishing a T.G. monster in her graveyard, she can remove T.G. Blade Blaster from play. Alex then summons Hieratic Dragon of Gebeb (ATK: 1800 DEF: 400).

Alex activates Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying one spell or trap card on the field, choosing Rainbow Dash’s face down card.

Alex attacks Rainbow Dash’s face down monster with Hieratic Dragon of Gebeb, which was a T.G. Metal Skeleton (ATK: 1100 DEF: 0). Alex attacks Rainbow Dash directly with Jade Wyvern.

Rainbow Dash’s Life Points: 900 -> 0

Alex wins.

“And we have a winner!” cheered the announcer. “Alex Yuwell shall advance to the semi-finals. Who will be his next opponent? Let’s see…”

Alex couldn’t help but pant in shock and awe. He was one step closer to not only becoming the best duelist in town, but he'd be another step closer to having his rematch with Kyle. Kyle was also impressed, his sneers at Alex replaced by a blank, unfeeling face. The crowd on the hill was very excited with the win, but the same couldn’t be said in Equestria.

Ponies were torn with whether they wanted to either boo Alex for defeating the legendary Rainbow Dash, or cheer the Stone of Equus bearer into the semi-finals. Princess Celestia was much warmer about the issue.

“You’ve dueled well, my little pony, but his journey cannot cease here. The fate of the world depends on it.”

Alex walked over to Rainbow Dash, who pounded her hooves on the stage in contempt of her defeat. Before Alex could do anything about it, the announcer called the next two names.

“The next duelists are… Thomas Emmitt and Applejack!”

Both duelists began to take the stage from the west entrance, but they both stopped by Rainbow Dash and gave her a hug.

“Rainbow,” said Applejack, “that was some fine dueling y’all did up there.”

“Yeah,” said Tom. “I never thought you would give Alex a run for his money like that.”

“You…” sniffled Rainbow Dash, “…you really mean that?”

“Every word,” responded Applejack. Tom and Applejack hugged Rainbow Dash once more, Alex joining in this time.

“Thanks,” said Rainbow Dash. “And guys?”

“Yes, sugar?”

“Go and kick some ass.”

“Done and done.”

Applejack and Tom walked to their places on the platform stage while Alex and Rainbow Dash sat back to watch the rest of the duels.
