We all know the stories where our heroes fall to the darkness. But sooner or later the light sears away the dark, and the price must be paid. And those they love must find a way to pick up the pieces, and those hurt must find a way to move on.

Ok, Fluttershy has now entered the downright creepy and scary territory. She is essentially someone who can control people mentally to a certain degree through extreme manipulation of emotions.
Here's an ethics question for you: if you throw her into a political situation where both sides are arguing to the point where war may break out and her ability to force kindness on people stops the war from happening. How ethically wrong are the actions you've taken in putting her in there when she can essentially force her mindset of kindness on people?
An interesting option, and perhaps one of the most extreme double edged swords possible. Very possibly, discord is truly the only one whom could stand against her (not that he would mind you). No other being could, between an almost innate escalation of local omniscience, coupled with what can be technically classified a corruptive aura, and coupled with discords protective nature. She's up and simply won. It is simply a matter of appeasing her until a natural death, if such, could happen, does. If not, well, be glad that such is well and truly aimed at benevolence, for otherwise, well, you're boned.
4808621 ......the regal sisters? you know who were so much of a threat it forced someone with discord's level of chaos magic, likely superior to fluttershy's in every way despite her aiblities, to implement a plan that used the power of a god tree to bind them?
seriously why do people forget that detail?
4808716 I don't comment often, but can I just say you appear to be getting obsessed over your interpretation of the tree to the point that its affecting your enjoyment of the story?
It's actually getting kinda annoying when I scroll through the comments to see you nitpicking a relatively unimportant detail (drama-wise) without letting the story do its thing.

Okay, dude? I've put up with this for six chapters now. So, cards on the table. The tree isn't going to do shit and is utterly uninvolved in the story. It didn't do shit to Tirek, Discord, Chrysalis, Sombra, or Nightmare Moon, and it sure as hell isn't going to do something here. The Tree is a Deus Ex Machina at best. Those kind of plot devices are boring. You'll notice I've used the Elements of Harmony all of exactly ONCE in the 16 stories I've put out, and the one and only time I did so it was used against a stupid-powerful creature on league with Discord and Nightmare Moon and to complete a major story arc for the main character.
The Tree is not sentient. Nothing we have seen indicates that it is sentient. It sprouted a castle seed, repressed plunder vines, and blew off some "BUY OUR TOYS" Rainbow Power given to ALL SIX of the former Elements of Harmony and NOTHING ELSE. It is not capable of acting on its own, nor is it an instant "Solve Problem" button.
I am putting my foot down, right now. If you came to me expecting a story where everything can be solved by lowering a wooden god onto the stage to sort out the problem so everything can be hunky-dory in the end, you've come to the wrong writer. If you don't like that, tough fillies.
And in addition, stop badgering the other commentators to accept your highly specific headcanon that has NOTHING to do with this story. Further badgering will be removed.

The question is, if you allow it once... why not twice, or more? if you can bend the rules for stopping awar, why not to convince an abusive husband to stop beating his wife? or a corrupt politician not to steal his voters? or a or a crime syndicate to help communities instead of extortion innocents? why don´t force bad people to be good, or good people to be better, all for the Greater Good? I don´t need to say how scary is what lies on the end of that slippery slope
That´s why Professor Xavier put so much emphasis in his code of ethic, and "lines not to be crossed" for those with the power of bending people and reality with their minds. Beware the Superman.

4808754
Gotta second this, dude. Just because someone's headcanon of the way they run with a story is different than yours doesn't mean you argue it to death - you smile and say "Huh, I'd write it differently", and if it bugs you THAT much, you can certainly go write your own interpretation elsewhere. I mean, I've done that half a dozen times myself.
4808824 ........wait, that is how it is supposed to work? ........ i thought she simply could influence people..............
kay this is just god dman confusing right now. how does one get this reactoin from poison joke?
4808574
Yes, that's certainly an interesting question.
I'm afraid of another thing, though. The report said to not place her in "a highly-charged social situation under any circumstances"... like this court case.
If they're not careful, Fluttershy will get each and everyone involved acquitted, regardless of what they actually did.
I'd have to agree with 4808824 I'm a little confused as to why Fluttershy's newfound power is a bad thing? Unless she's a walking Reform spell, I don't see how bad it is that Twilight is freaking out about it and there's such a big deal about changing her back.
Also another question, has Rarity turned into a succubus? Maybe I'm just being stupid but I couldn't quite visualize exactly what she had become by the description alone. Her story is what had drawn me to the succubus conclusion.
4808898
Basically, yes, she is. Although she doesn't actually harm anyone she mates with, outside of perhaps exhausting them and them needing a great deal of water to drink afterwords. She does, in fact, feed from sex and love. There might be other after effects, but.... well, that's a mystery that may forever remain unanswered.
As to why this is bad... Well, that's going to become more clear in the second part, but... I'd advise you to think about some of the things she said during the trial, and how that might relate to this being one of those moments where - no matter how awesome a power might seem, there is always a price.
4808907
Ah, I see! I can't wait until the next part.
You also didn't confirm or deny if my last 4754094 comment was correct or not.
Huh, you've got some weird commenters following your story, doesn't sound like much fun.
Also, Fluttershy you are one freaky pony, so bloody freaky.
Edit: For some unknown reason I posted two nearly identical comments, I have deleted one, I have not been repressed by the author or anything like that.
4808826
It's almost as if she belonged in SCP or something...
Oh, this is so very, very interesting. I can just see it now. Fluttershy turns to the judge and says, "Your Honor. Elegant and Fizzy Pop aren't really bad ponies. They just need some extra help. Why don't you pardon them and we can set all of this behind us?" From what we've seen of Flutters new powers, the Judge would agree. Justice would not be served. Luna would shit a brick.

4808898
I think the big problem with Fluttershy's new ability is the question of Free Will. She is basically imposing her view of Kindness onto all living things around her. Her own thoughts and feelings are overriding those of other sentient creatures. Yes, having Free Will means that someone can be a complete, and total, asshat. That's the drawback of Free Will. Still, I'd rather have my Free Will kept intake even if that means I have to deal with bullies and jerks from time to time.
Actually, this set up reminds me of "A Clockwork Orange" in a way. At least the part where the main character was conditioned to not act or think of anything violent and the consequences thereof.
4808868
*sigh*
I'm going to regret this, but I'm going to try anyway.
Ok. It isn't poison joke. Let's look at chapter 1:
Fizzy Pop used Discordite Flowers and created an alchemical potion to alter ponies in an attempt to cure genetic disorders. That's why the changes are so extreme. Not only are Discordite Flowers powerful on their own but they have been further modified by Fizzy Pop in over two thousand experiments performed on living ponies.
Now, please, please, please! No more headcanon about the Elements and the Tree. It's cool you've got your own view on how those things work but it isn't shared by the author and, dare I say, it isn't even shared by most of the readers of this story.

4808824
I was thinking more in Princess Gaia/Nightmare Whisper from the Pony POV series.
4809624
I've never read the POV series. Can you elaborate a bit?
4808962
Oh, durr. Yes, yes they are. I would've thought Dark Coffee making ridiculous coffee references in Swizzle's chapter had answered that.
4808754 4809436 4808839
The Lord scenario is now over, guys. I warned him, my warnings were ignored, I am exercising my moderation powers over this comments section and over all of my comments sections in general.
Lord, you've been blocked. You may, someday, be unblocked. I would advise you to consider in the interim exactly why and how you comment on someone else's work, especially in terms of how you respect authorial intent as well as the opinions of other commentators.
4809884 It was for the best. Can't wait for the last few chapters.
4809436
That's pretty much where I saw this going. Particularly after Luna mentioning doing the "cruel" thing for Celly, and Flutters wanting everyone to be kind.
As for the Pony POV thing 4809624 mentioned, I might be remembering wrong, but Fluttershy basically became a goddess, took ponies into her "kingdom" against their will, and essentially took all of their suffering and negative feelings into herself so that they can live in eternal happiness as innocent foals. Unfortunately, all the pain and suffering turned her into this eldritch horror in the process. (spoilers)
4810185
That! Sounds really cool, actually. I may have to go take a gander at that.
4809884
"The Lord Scenario" sounds like a hit daytime drama coming soon to TNT.
4810458
I would say that this is why the medical notes basically label Fluttershy as a national security threat. In fact, based on Rarity's own comments about how she will sneak into ponies homes in the night to corrupt them, she too is a national security threat.
The greatest part of this tragedy is that, in the end, the Princesses might have to contain Rarity and Fluttershy to protect the population at large. A terrible thing to do to two ponies that have given Equestria so much.
I have a feeling the ending will be heart wrenching.
4810565
Those notes do not say that. They don't even imply that. There's no reading between the lines here; all that is said that Fluttershy's powers are a dangerous unknown. Stupidly, it also says that they don't know what her motivations are, when those haven't changed.
While I won't argue that both Rarity and Fluttershy's conditions aren't a cause for concern, neither of them represent a threat to national security. Both of them- at heart -are the same that they ever were. All that has happened is that they've become an extreme version of what virtue that they already represented; Generosity and Kindness. Granted, Rarity is now on the Darker spectrum of that virtue, but that's a point for another debate.
You have raised a vital point though. The both of them do represent a clear risk. However, I think there's little that the princesses can do about it. The EoH are out for at least a couple of reasons. One is that neither 'Shy nor Rarity are in agreement as to their use. The other is that they'd likely not even work. Setting aside the author's view on that particular Deus Ex Machina, nothing truly central has changed for either of them; they still represent the virtues they always have.
With both of them being what they are now, do you think anything less would work? Not likely.
Like I said, a good point. Just not one that can be easily addressed.
