Before Nightmare Moon returned, before even twilight became Celestia’s prodigy, the princess was visited during a night of harsh sobbing at the memories of her banished sister. It was a young colt that came into her chambers and gave her comfort that she hadn’t felt in a long time.

This colt would become something much more afterwards. He’d become Celestia’s new adopted son, Twilight’s first childhood friend, the migraine of many snarky nobles and high class citizens, a famous explorer of the unknown, a warrior and protector for the innocent and defenseless.

But most of all...he would become the Unbreakable will of Equestria that will never yield to evil and the corrupted.

He would become...A Hero among Heroes

Update 10/02/2024: I have since decided this story is non-canon to my main project after re-polishing my alicorn (and Opaline) lore. However, all characters who both appeared and were named are still canon (i.e. Opaline still exists)

It has been over one thousand years since the alicorns went extinct. Well, not truly extinct.

The centaur known as Tirek was led to Skyros by the Alicorn of Fire, and soon, Skyros fell, and with it, all of the alicorns within.

One alicorn who escaped hid himself from the world. He believed all of his fellow alicorns save for Opaline to be dead. Only now is he visited by a stranger who will prove him wrong. One who knows far more than she should.

There’s a concept that is somewhat important to this story that I couldn’t find a good place to insert, so I’ll just explain the concept here:

Once every few generations, a special unicorn is born. These unicorns are called “Flares” for the tendency for their magic to flare up randomly as they grow up. While other unicorn foals can have magic flares (like Pumpkin Cake for example), a true flare is marked by magical power that flares up and stays up once they get their cutie mark.

During times leading up to great strife, the gaps between the births of flares would close. In fact, if threat was great enough, the gap between the births of unicorn flares could be as little as one year. If you were to measure the gaps between flare births, you could pretty accurately predict when the next threat is to occur (although Celestia, was really the only one paying attention and already knew about the return of Nightmare Moon)

Over the course of G4, we’ve become aware of not one, not two, but six unicorn flares: Twilight Sparkle, Starswirl the Bearded, Clover the Clever, Sunset Shimmer, Starlight Glimmer, and Luster Dawn.

And there are equivalents for pegasi and earth ponies, but they are much rarer

Fluttershy finds an injured creature that she doesn't know about, so she calls for Applejack and Twilight Sparkle. But when Twilight touches it, they are sent to an unknown world. Trapped for an unkown amount of time, The three friends are determined to help out side of the beings who found them. The face of Azeroth will change forever.

It's been years since Twilight made the device to keep the portal to Remnant open 24/7 to let her friends Sunset Shimmer and Quart Belladonna come visit or help Equestria. And now Princess Twilight Sparkle and Princess Sunset Shimmer will have their coronation soon once the Legion of Doom is defeated...

However, unknown to everypony, a Grimm appeared through the portal due to its frequent use and had attacked the pony close to it, infecting them with black goo that corrupts any creature in Equestria.

This is an AU where Sunset learned humility earlier than in canon by Quart Belladonna (the daughter of that AU's Goku and Penny Polendina), who broke her pride in front of everyone in their sparring matches, with Quart offering to help her and become Celestia's student again (both Sunset and Celestia wanted it). Sunset did admit deep down she always felt like she was making some big mistake abandoning Celestia's studies, and Celestia wished for Sunset to return to her and continue her studies.

Her stealing the crown clearly never happens here, thus not ruining that hope. Sunset Shimmer stays in the human world (Remnant in Universe 7 instead of Earth in Universe 7) to learn more of friendship there and only comes to Equestria whenever there is a threat, the Mane Seven are needed, or for a short visit. Sunset became an alicorn in the battle against Tirek, after which she forgave Discord for what he did, understanding him. Altering her own destiny by changing her ways

However, this changed Twilight's dynamic with Celestia and her friends. Seeing as Sunset is quite patient with the group's rage while Twilight is still quite temperamental with hers, Twilight's friends accidentally favored listening to Sunset's plans over Twilight's and asked about when Sunset will visit Equestria, not understanding how it affected Twilight.

Princess Celestia made Sunset her student again, and ever since then Twilight's been feeling like Celestia has been slowly replacing her with her reformed first student, how Sunset solves problems better than her, and how all Twilight's friends look towards Sunset for advice instead of her. It makes Twilight feel like she's being replaced, makes her feel like her friends don't need her anymore, and makes her envious and jealous of Sunset, who's now the princess of empathy and an alicorn like Twilight. That bottled-up envy and jealousy was going to corrupt Twilight eventually, just like what happened to Nightmare Moon, but Twilight felt like she had to keep it bottled up because Sunset is her friend. She and Sunset will become co-rulers of Equestria when Luna and Celestia retire, but even despite that, Twilight's envy and jealousy grew.

History would almost repeat itself, with Twilight's growing envy towards Sunset's precious light as others favor Sunset over Twilight... almost the same way Luna felt about Celestia before becoming Nightmare Moon. But thankfully, Sunset caught wind of Twilight's feelings, and they had talked things out prior to the start of the story.

Nightmare Moon reigns over an Equestria veiled by eternal night, forcing the ponies to worship her and shower her with tribute, even as they struggle to live without the Sun. Princess Celestia has been sealed away in the Moon, and the Queen of Nightmares has crushed all resistance underhoof. At least, that's what some ponies want her to think. A loose network of rebels works under perpetual cloak of darkness to see the Sun rise again... and a brief visit from a timeline-hopping alicorn might provide just the edge they need.
