Concerns rise between Spitfire, Fleetfoot, and Soarin when they notice Rainbow's low performance in the past few days. They're aware that Rainbow is capable of doing much better, proven by Spitfire, so they can't help but wonder if something's wrong. After Spitfire's and Fleetfoot's attempts at confrontation go wrong, they count on Soarin, the Wonderbolt Rainbow seemingly is closer with, to get to the bottom of it.

The story takes place after "Amending Fences."

After making up with Twilight, Moondancer decides to try being more sociable and attends a massive Nightmare Night party Pinkie Pie is hosting. But during the party, she was transformed into a batpony and gets help from another batpony named Echo to help her learn about how to deal with her new body and find a cure. Then they both come across the pony behind her transformation, an evil Vampire batpony named "Count Appleblood." So, the two go on an adventure to cure Moondancer and take down the Count before his curse spreads across Equestria.
