Smart Girlfriend Is Writing A Blog Series On Horror, You Should Read It · 9:26pm Jun 15th, 2016

You like my words? This lady is the brain behind half of them. Check out part one here.

I've been a lurker, commenter, and contributor on this site for about three years now, and in between the endless crossovers, the adventures, and everything else I've found improbably connected to ponies, real horror is probably the rarest thing I've seen.

The Reasons We Write Fanfics · 11:02pm Dec 28th, 2022

There are several reasons why people write fanfics. But I think that most people who write fanfics will agree that most people who write fanfics do so for the same reason as the people who create the original content that those fanfics are based on. The question then is, why do writers write the intellectual properties that fanfics can be made from?

Part 4: Immediacy vs Investment

In our past three lessons we have covered various aspects of narrative capital, making analogies to actual currency and how authors write good stories by making convincing exchanges. In short, making plot development feel earned by purchasing them.

Helpful books for writers 2 · 9:26pm Feb 4th, 2018

Hey everybody. A while back, I made a blog post talking about various writing-related books that I found helpful and which I recommend for those trying to write. (Link here) I don't exactly have much to add at this moment, but I thought I'd put this here in case somebody found the first list useful.

The Power of Instrumental Music · 2:33am Jul 8th, 2017

The Power of Instrumental Music

I have found that in order for me to write the best quality first-drafts, I have to put myself in the most appropriate mood. To accomplish this, I have one simple strategy that often works more than not.

It’s actually a three step process, and it consists of the following required tasks:

1) Identify the genre in which I am trying to write

2) Find appropriate instrumental music that relates to what I’m trying to write

Helpful books for writers · 2:25am Apr 16th, 2017

Hey everybody. Hope you all enjoyed the season 7 premiere. I haven't gotten around to watching it, yet.

Anyway, I mentioned this before in the author's notes for my story, A Tale of Two Suns, and if you haven't read it, I encourage you to do so. But the point is that I'm in the habit of cross-posting my work on various sites like fanfiction.net, Archive of Our Own, and Deviant Art.

It's 2am, Let's Do This · 10:15am Feb 21st, 2019

Hey all. For those who may or may not still pay attention to whatever I do here. It's been awhile, hasn't it? XD

I've been going through a lot of shit and I really haven't had the motivation to write.

It's Not Okay was started when I was in a very specific head space... and between that and it not being finished it still gets favorites for some reason. XD

The other thing is that my series with Sunset and my OCs still gets a favorite every now and then too.

Writer's Block Sucks. · 4:39am Oct 15th, 2023

You know what else still sort of sucks?

The complete opposite.

Five MLP stories in-progress, four of which are nearing completion.
One Sonic story in-progress.
Two Freedom Planet stories in the brainstorming phase.

And what the hell, let's do all of this with the 2023 Halo World Championship going on this weekend and taking even more of my time.

Having a creative streak is not all it's cracked up to be, kids.

Hard Learned Advice to Beginning Authors · 12:09am Dec 17th, 2021

As a beginning author, keep in mind:

  1. The only successful story is a finished story. ARE YOU WRITING YET?
  2. Not every idea is a good idea for a story.
  3. Ideas are useless if you don't write them.
  4. Ideas are a dime a dozen! If you disagree, please don't argue with me: Make a list of 100 of them. (See next item.)

[Writing Tips] Remember This About Your Writing · 2:21am Feb 13th, 2016

If you think that your own writing is boring and predictable, that's because:
1)You wrote it
2)You’ve read it like eight million times.
Others who haven't read your words before won't have this issue.
EDIT: But it also doesn't hurt to have people read your stuff. People you trust to give their honest opinions.

Writing 101: Neologisms and Technobabble (How Much Is Too Much?) · 8:48am Oct 2nd, 2017

So I recently finished playing Tales of Berseria. Like many games in its genre, it was a dense experience, both in terms of gameplay and story. This density has many expressions, but one that I noticed in particular was its use of invented terms and technobabble. Here’s a partial list of some of the world-specific terms it uses;

* Malevolence – Evil energy. Related to the next item.
* Demonblight – A disease that turns people into demons.

I've had five live-writing sessions since starting that, all on CSP.

In those five sessions, I've written 12,542 first-draft words.

Two sequences to go, and the chapter will be done, and I can begin editing.

Just thought you'd like to know... and if you'd like to see the first draft material, you ought to join my Patreon...

Be an Author: The Message · 2:05am Oct 29th, 2018

In my previous Be an Author* blog on Agendas, I wrote that every character has an agenda. You do, too.

You have an agenda.

You always have a reason to write a story. To communicate. If you are successful, you will have gotten your reader to think about... what?

Your message, of course.

Titles Are Hard—But We Can Make Them Easier · 9:59am Nov 12th, 2017

Over the past few years, I've participated and had my work critiqued in countless writing workshops, each one varying in both content and usefulness. After all, there's only so much that university students, most of them beginning writers, can comment on in half an hour. Yet, if there's one thing that's been constant in every workshop I've attended, it's this: when the time comes to comment on the workshopped piece's title, everyone goes silent. Or, if they do speak up, it's just to give a
