Fic recs, February 21st: Luna Farrowe edition! · 8:09pm Feb 21st, 2020

The next reader on my list: the ever-popular Luna Farrowe! Who I really should have been watching sooner. :B List of previously reviewed readings:

wille197's Unicorns Are Magical
TooShyShy's Let Her In
Staeg Masque's The Cold Hand of Mercy, with KittyWish and AShadowOfCygnus
GutiuSerenade's Feathers, with a bunch of folks
part one of Ether Echoes's Three Nights in Manehattan, also with a bunch of people
Rambling Writer's Cant

Unfortunately, that leaves me with precisely three stories to review, so I tossed a couple extra in as well. Hiatus after this for more RIN-paring.

Rot by Mister E
Reading by Luna Farrowe, Scribbler and Neighrator Pony
Genre: Dark
Twilight makes the mistake of asking Discord where his powers come from.
As dark explanations for show canon go, this is actually one of the best I've seen. All the really dark stuff comes in the gross imagery after the explanation. (Plus, it rather passes the point where the point has gotten across.) The usual warnings thus apply, but it may be worth your while to read up to just before where Twilight opens her eyes.
Recommended If You Like Dark Fics

The Salarymare's Infinitude by AShadowOfCygnus
Reading
Genre: Slice of Life
Y'all know ShadowOfCygnus is just as good at writing as reading, right? The word use in this story is astounding, it reads like a poem. (Too true, Luna's voice all but lulled me to sleep and I had to read the darn thing myself, oops.) Someone in the comments called it "Slice of Death", as "no living took place in it". Too real. That's why it's so depressing, though; this is absolutely a day-in-the-life of a life that is neither remarkable nor fulfilling. Whew, but it's a real good piece, no lie.
Highly Recommended

Always There by AutoPony
Reading
Genre: Comfort Fic
Given that the author says this was based on a dream, I can't blame them for too much. The writing is just fine, it's the subject matter which I couldn't really get into. I mean, there's something to be said for having a pony come to your bedside and say something you need to hear, it's just… Did it have to come in the form of suggesting a relationship between the human and Luna? Well, you'll probably know ahead of time whether you want to read this.
Recommended If You Need Some Reassurance

Default Dance by DrOcsid and BootyPopperzZz
Genre: Crackfic
It all started with Lyra dancing in the shower.
So all the jokes in this story are derived from Fortnite. I'm pleased (citation needed) with myself for picking up on that, but I don't think you need any understanding of the situation; it merely provides a method to the madness. And what madness this is! It was really funny, really goofy, just a good time all round. The best part may have been getting to the author's note and seeing what inspired all the randomness.

In Vino Veritas by Coyote de la Mancha
Sequel to Twilight Doesn't
Genre: Slice of Life
Interesting to think of Rarity and Octavia being old friends. There isn't a whole lot to this besides, though, unless you've not read one of the surprising number of treatises on polyamory you can find on this site. In fact, it was rather dry, and I wished I could have seen more of Twilight and Vinyl's conversation. I expect this little scenelet will pay off in a later story, though it bothers me that this is also what I said about Twilight Doesn't.

I really liked the idea of "Rot," but it stopped before making a conclusion or playing out several of its plot threads. Plus the editing needed quite a bit of work. With how popular the story was, I figure the author wouldn't have had any trouble getting help with that, but I guess he didn't care to.

Neat :) yeah, I really enjoy her smooth and calming voice ❤️ so who’s be next? Sparrow, Lotus, Minors, cloud nine?

I'll find out after I post the next blog! (Almost all the links I have are in standard Youtube facesmash form rather than channel name. :B)

Interestingly, this one should have been dedicated to Zephysonas, but they unlisted all their readings. :C

present you fool there is no zero in my name
this review was a shocker though. glad you enjoyed it, i'd kinda cast that story to the furthest depths of my memory

Thank you so much for sharing these! Quite honestly, reading fics has been at the back of my mind lately with all the work I've been doing - so it was nice to see that people are still fond of the work that's out there at the moment. <3

To this day I am still bewildered that Rot is my most-viewed reading - by miles. I'm sitting comfortably on about 300 views per video on most things and there this monstrosity stands at something like 20,000? Youtube's algorithm truly is a deep mystery.
