Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Friendship is Card Games: Growing Up is Hard to Do · 11:21am Sep 29th, 2019

With persistence and courage, I return largely triumphant from the tournament grounds of Eldraine. Let’s take a look at what three young squire-steeds are up to.

I do appreciate how Scootaloo’s snacks are a mix of potato chips and raw carrots. Yes, the Crusaders are (or at least should be) young teenagers at this point, but they’re still horses.

I also like seeing the lasting impacts of Twilight Time. In this case, obsessive scheduling and subtle foreshadowing for the teleport in the third act.

Oh wow. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Sweetie as angry as when she bucks over that easel.

Always good to see Rarity’s maintaining her Canterlot connections even with the added work of the school.

Ah, looks like the Wonderbolts are pulling emergency relief duty again. Hopefully this goes better than the whole “rampaging dragon” incident.
Also, I imagine Scootaloo has a lot of practice in shouting up to cloud level.

I have to love how Appleoosa, the frontier settlement on the open prairie that’s barely two steps up from a shantytown, is being presented as a dangerous, labyrnthine urban environment for young ponies. (Granted, there’s enough of a forest in the area to get lost and end up next to an unlucky behemoth’s trailer, so what do I know? :derpytongue2:)

I take it Sugar Belle isn’t available for Macsitting duty for some reason.

So… by any chance, did Starswirl get that flower from a cursed prince?

So. Many. Pouty faces. It’s equal parts adorable and bizarre given all the new expression assets they made for this season.

I do appreciate how Twilight asked Fluttershy for help with this research project. After all, Fluttershy was the one who figured out Meadowbrook’s identity in “A Health of Information.”

Of course Twilight has multiple categories for old but potentially useful books. As far as she’s concerned, all old books are at least potentially useful. She’s not making the same mistake she did with Supernaturals way back when.

The moment the words “I wish” crossed Scootaloo’s lips, I knew we were in for something disastrous.

What? Your Crusaders are evolving! (Seriously, based on what we’ve seen, I’m pretty sure this isn’t too far off from how ponies normally age.)

And so the voice actresses and characters are close in age once more.

It hurt to see those still-stunted wings on grown Scootaloo, I won’t lie.

Oh! Didn’t expect a musical number. It is interesting to see how the crowd not only isn’t joining in, they’re being annoyed. Likely because the Crusaders are completely wrong. It is a shame they never worked in a lesson about how some behavior is cute when you’re a kid but socially unacceptable when you’re an adult. You know, like watching Saturday morning cartoons. :raritywink:

Obnoxious she may be, but Scootaloo still got that baby to stop crying.

That globe may be the most information we’ve gotten on the world of Equestria ever. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem to mesh with any previously established map. Hmm. Maybe it’s the other hemisphere.

Okay, wow, the older Crusaders filming this episode’s cold open is disconcertingly meta in a wonderful way.

“We know how it all works, even what we ain’t tried.” Ironic. By growing up, they’ve gone back to an earlier mindset. After all, this is how they thought getting their cutie marks would work.

So… did they mean to get off at Artax Memorial Station in the Swamps of Sadness, or were they kicked off the train? (And seriously, girls, listen to the conductor and look at the stop. I could navigate subway systems when I was six; this isn’t that complicated.)

Oh hey, the Peaks of Peril conductor got transferred. Or has a twin.

Poor guy. Being an ominous sign of impending peril is hard on the lungs.

Come on, girls, what were the Filly Scouts for if you can’t read a map?

Ooh, a bufogren. Be nice, Scootaloo, it’s more scared of you than you are of it.

Okay, the actual swamp ponies turning up their noses at the foals actually made me laugh out loud.

Curly-haired young pegasus… Be open-minded, FoME, she’s almost definitely not Cozy Glow in disguise…

:facehoof: Girls. It is literally your job to give constructive advice. Just because this doesn’t involve cutie marks doesn’t mean you can’t ask questions like “Why are you concerned about Bloofy?”

A carnival game that isn’t rigged? What sorcery is this? (Also, the plushies on offer include a parasprite, a phoenix, and a jackalope. Nice.)

Good to see Troubleshoes is still bringing joy to others. And that he’s made peace with his lot in life as fate’s chew toy.

Oh hey, the girls could’ve gone with Lyra and Bonbon… though I suppose each groups would be chaperoning the other in that case.

I am ninety-nine percent sure that one of the fried things on sticks Scootaloo’s holding is a giant shrimp. Which raises a number of questions, not least is how it got to Appleoosa in an even remotely edible state.

Huh. Mrs. Cake, also an option. It’s a shame the Crusaders never got around to asking Pinkie Pie; she probably could’ve referred them to her.

Bloofy’s reveal was by turns adorable and concerning. In the end, it settled on the former. At first.

“What could go wrong?”
DID YOU ACTUALLY—
Oh. At least she acknowledged it. Though seriously, Scootaloo, what even the crap.

And, of course, both pony Dorothy Gale and a cow get sucked into the tornado. :rainbowlaugh:

I was astonished to see Sweetie teleport, but I appreciate that she ended up both lodged in a hay bale and suffering from burnout afterwards. Even Twilight had some teething trouble with that spell.

Only during the “take in all the damage” establishing shot did I realize the pet show was held in the buckball stadium. Good continuity.

Girls, your coloration and cutie marks haven’t changed. Your manestyles barely shifted. Even if they didn’t already know what you’d done, I think they’d recognize you.

So… any reason why Twilight can’t just paralyze Bloofy? There’s difference between “the only one who can calm it down” and “the only one who can stop it.” I suppose Fluttershy would consider the resulting trauma unacceptable.

A crystal ewe? Must have been one of the other competitors.

Equestria, where wrecking the stadium not doesn’t disqualify you, it clinches an award. Besides, it’s about time Ponyville stopped hogging all the disaster relief funds.

The impending high princess of Equestria assuring foals that no, ponies in positions of authority don’t always know what they’re doing. Just in case you were worried about Tyrant Sparkle.

Spoiler: Star Swirl totally minded that the last two petals of the wishblossom were wasted on youthful folly.

I do agree with a few of the more negative reactions I’ve seen: More could have been done with the concept of adult Crusaders—especially seeing their sisters’ reactions—and their general attitude does seem more immature than it should at this stage in their lives. That said, just because it could’ve been better doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun. Lightweight, yes, but fun, with plenty of conceptual fodder to work with. After all, just because the show didn’t explore that territory doesn’t mean we can’t, to say nothing of scenarios where somepony thinks to wish for more petals on the flower. (Hey, it might work. And if it doesn’t, the repercussions are a story in and of themselves.)

In any case, it’s time to look at this week’s cards:

It hurt to see those still-stunted wings on grown Scootaloo, I won’t lie.

Heck you, I got a headcanon validation! :D

Anyone else at least slightly disturbed that the one with the Cozy Glow mane-do was named "Spur"? :pinkiegasp:

Curly-haired young pegasus… Be open-minded, FoME, she’s almost definitely not Cozy Glow in disguise…

You talk about her mane, but what about her name and cutie mark. Is her special talent being a pain-in-the mule?

That said, just because it could’ve been better doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun. Lightweight, yes, but fun, with plenty of conceptual fodder to work with.

It was a fun cheesecake slice of an episode. I liked the aged up designs and the aged up voices (Even though I suspect is just the VA’s using their normal speaking voices.) Plus adult Sweetie Belle is probably what adult Flurry Heart would look like. As far as references go.

Sad to see Scoots affliction stay that way in both directions though. If the wish flower could wish anything. Scoots might have tacked on “Turn us back into foals —andalsobythewaygivemefullwingstoopleasepleaseplease.

Compulsive Cackling BB
Enchantment
At the beginning of your upkeep, each player draws a card and loses 1 life.
A most shameful affliction. I could not show my face in public for moons after my return.”
Princess Luna

I giggle at the thought of Luna secreting an anti-cackle inhaler. Else her voice returns to booming and a few tee hee’s slip out.

Large and in Charge 3G
Enchantment — Aura
Enchant creature
When Large and in Charge enters the battlefield, you become the monarch.
Enchanted creature gets +3/+3 and must be blocked if able.
Celestia’s stature gives every tall pony an air of authority.

It hurt to see those still-stunted wings on grown Scootaloo, I won’t lie.

Well, for all we know, that was how the flower interpreted "adult Scootaloo". Or that's how Scootaloo herself now subconsciously thinks / fears she might grow up. Or the magical equivalent of those websites that "show what you will look like in 40 years".

pics.me.me/Facebook-0c2483.png

(Notice, how Scootaloo never even realized she was "all grown up" but still couldn't fly? It may be her subconscious expectation at this point, and the flower merely picked up on that. :derpyderp2:)

Or heck, maybe Scootaloo will one day find the right vitamin therapy or something to get her wing muscles going. Or maybe she'll pull a Bulk Biceps. Anything still goes. :ajsmug:

derpicdn.net/img/view/2014/1/18/527622.gif

There are all number of solutions to this, this "flowery future-telling" is not necessarily "canon adult Scootaloo can't fly confirmed". There's still wiggle room.

Though yeah, lots of potential for story drama about Scootaloo thinking that she got "confirmation" for never being able to fly. ...Really, too bad Rainbow Dash wasn't in the second half of the episode to see her, and her wingspan. :rainbowhuh:

Heck, that could've been the final straw to cut for Dash to start thinking of solutions other than "wait for her to grow up, she's just a late bloomer, it'll be fine", which at this point could also be seen as slightly delusional. Like, you know, actually go ask medical experts. Magical experts. Ask Twilight for help, since at this point, some intervention may be required to make sure she grows up right, rather than the old "wait and see / don't mess with it" mantra. :rainbowderp:

I expect someone to write post-episode stories about Scootaloo in particular. :trixieshiftright:

On the other end of the spectrum, Sweetie Belle being able to teleport did surprise me. Even Rarity can't do that. :derpyderp1:

That line at the start about "You sure you're not Twilight's sister? Ahahahahah :rainbowlaugh:" suddenly becomes a lot more interesting. :rainbowderp:

Oh wow. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Sweetie as angry as when she bucks over that easel.

I mean, Sweetie Belle did all the organization stuff, and then all her planning was for nothing. :facehoof:

Curly-haired young pegasus… Be open-minded, FoME, she’s almost definitely not Cozy Glow in disguise…

Similar freckles... also a pegasus... similar mane style and color... I was thinking sister or other relative. :duck:

Okay, wow, the older Crusaders filming this episode’s cold open is disconcertingly meta in a wonderful way.

That weird juxtaposition of seeing the older Crusaders interact with their younger selves, where have I seen this before?

Oh... That's right, Amazon's German store page for MLP:FiM, season 3! :pinkiecrazy:

And who could forget the season 6 episode where Rainbow Dash kissed R63 Fluttershy? :raritystarry:

...I discovered these around March 30th, 2017. Even reported them to EQD, thinking it was German Amazon's idea of an early April Fools joke. Not sure if EQD ever reported on it, though; didn't see the article if they did. More than a year and a half later, it's still there. They used fanart as backgrounds on their official store page. :rainbowlaugh:

One of which was, like, draw with MS Paint. I mean, it's obviously not official, how can you mistake it for that? :twilightoops:

[...] to say nothing of scenarios where somepony thinks to wish for more petals on the flower.

"We wish we were foals again."

derpicdn.net/img/2012/7/10/39123/large.png

Err... :rainbowderp:

...Or, what would have happened, if somepony else had used up the wish first? :twilightoops:

Say, Biscuit, had muttered a desperate "Oh, I wish I had listened to my sister". Nopony explained the situation to the siblings until afterwards, he didn't know somepony was carrying a wishing-flower with them, nor, that the last wish was still needed.

The CMC would be stuck in bodies twice their age(?) for a considerable while longer, and reversing that might prove difficult. Aging spells do exist, and we've seen Twilight turn herself into a foal by accident.

derpicdn.net/img/view/2019/2/5/1954504.gif

But I presume none are permanent, or else, well, instant immortality.

So... imagine the comedy of errors if the CMC had stayed like that for another week, or month, or something. :pinkiecrazy:

I am surprised there wasn't a single "stallion at a bar trying to hit on three innocent little fillies that look like adults who misunderstand all his innuendos" joke in this. :trollestia:

I mean, trying to get alcohol would've seemed like a logical thing to attempt. :pinkiecrazy:

5129930
Errr. I'm not a native English speaker, and "spur" seems to have rather a number of possible translations. Which one are you referring to? :rainbowhuh:

5129936

Sad to see Scoots affliction stay that way in both directions though.

Oh hi.

See my post here for my headcanon fix:
5129939

I love the design on Whirling Mungtooth.

5129941
Well in this case it would be the device that horseback riders (especially cowboys) sometimes wear on their boots. It has a little wheel with spikes on it and It's used to urge the horse to do what the rider wants. Her cutie mark is actually a boot with a spur attached. Why would such a thing exist in Equestria? Like why do saddles exist there? The implications can be...weird.

Yes, the Crusaders are (or at least should be) young teenagers at this point

My running theory is that ponies have lifespans more akin to elves in D&D. It'd explain why the cmc are still foals, the cake twins are still babies, and Granny Smith was around for the founding of Ponyville hundreds of years ago.

It hurt to see those still-stunted wings on grown Scootaloo, I won’t lie.

Soon as I saw those I said out loud "Oh that is not fair"

5129947
Either way? Yes you should be worried about her.

At least Cozy could have used her Talent for good (replace and protect royalty, perfect for a bodyguard or adviser) but it’s hard to see how driving people to do what you want could be good.

Then again, skull and crossbones was actually fine. This is why I’m not a cmc :p

5129947
I mean, slavers with whips are a thing, but a random background filly with a slave-driving cutie mark just raises more questions... that can be answered by the implications of being a Cozy Glow recolor. :rainbowderp: (It's funny how that emoticon is allegedly "rainbowderp" yet I mostly see it used for Explain Explain Oh Crap)

In part of making Sweetie Belle older, the wishing flower automatically applied eyeliner.

Come on, girls, what were the Filly Scouts for if you can’t read a map?

By this point, it's evolved into an organization that solely exists for and supports itself through the sale of cookies.

Oh, I'm sorry -- I forgot that we were supposed to use this space to discuss My Little Pony.

I am ninety-nine percent sure that one of the fried things on sticks Scootaloo’s holding is a giant shrimp.

To me, it looks like a carrot with too much breading.

Huh. Mrs. Cake, also an option.

My rationalization: She was at the fair for a dessert competition and had to arrive early to get signed in. By the time the Crusaders realized they had no chaperone, she was already gone.

I'm with the majority in saying that while it was great to see the Crusaders finally age (even if it was straight past teenagers and into adults), the plot itself was middle-of-the-road. Still, it's a better send-off for the CMCs than "The Last Crusade" would have been.

Going to try to get some replies in this week.

5129930 5129970 5129979
Best case scenario, she's a great motivator, spurring other ponies to do what they need to but lack the wherewithal to do on their own. as Cheerilee has demonstrated since the beginning, cutie marks can be very symbolic. Spur might also have a talent for steering other things in the direction she wants, be they conversations, trends, or similar forms of manipulation that aren't inherently evil.

Alternatively, she's actually a time traveler from the Equestrian Wasteland and is trying to fit in with all the brightly colored ponies who weren't raised in a raider camp.

5129939
i do like the idea of the flower working off mental images rather than physically aging the girls. And at the very least, Twilight and Fluttershy both saw what adult Scootaloo was working with. They're the most medically inclined members of the Mane Six; they may be more helpful in getting her airborne than Dash.

5129944
Thanks! It's always fun when I can find a trigger that's never been done before. Especially if said trigger conditions don't take up the entire text box.

5129936

Plus adult Sweetie Belle is probably what adult Flurry Heart would look like. As far as references go.

Don't forget the two-foot-long horn and the wings that weigh as much as the rest of her. Unless she's going to grow into them, but that's not nearly as amusing as Princess Albatross.

Agreed on wanting to see Scootaloo slip in a wing fix. Still, Bulk Biceps has made do with less...

I giggle at the thought of Luna secreting an anti-cackle inhaler. Else her voice returns to booming and a few tee hee’s slip out.

The inhaler was a stopgap until the vocal coaching took... though she does still keep one on hoof in case of relapses.

“Wait your society is based on tallness?” —Dib from Invader Zim

Don't be silly. Ponies aren't Irken. Ponies is orkz!

5129957
Elf ponies would make sense... though that raises the question of how ponies forgot about Nightmare Moon, Discord, et al. over the course of just a few generations. Seriously, historical literacy is not Equestria's strong suit. (And now I want to see Twilight attack the EEA for leaving the country unready for ancient evils.)

5129970
It all comes down to whether you want the best for them. Or she may have a future in the Guard. Either way, I'm sure that's quite the cutie mark story.

5129987
I'm pretty sure the eyeshadow is genetic. Have we ever seen any instance of Rarity without any? Heck, that's one of the distinctions between pony and human Fluttershy.

By this point, it's evolved into an organization that solely exists for and supports itself through the sale of cookies.

Oh, I'm sorry -- I forgot that we were supposed to use this space to discuss My Little Pony.

Ouch. All the pump spells in this review put together wouldn't deal that much damage.

5129995
I'll be honest, I was expecting a different Eldraine card in that link. Conrad works too, I guess.

5129995
Darnit Starlight... okay yes, *technically* rescuing orphans from the war torn future wastelands of an alternate universe and resettling them in a happy and fairly utopian environment (especially in comparison) is probably a good thing but you need to think through the CONSEQUENCES...

Whenever another creature dies, or a creature card is put into a graveyard from anywhere other than the battlefield, or a creature card leaves your graveyard

...That's a heck of a trigger. Couldn't you shorten it to

Whenever another creature card is put into a graveyard from anywhere, or a creature card leaves your graveyard

And get exactly the same thing? Or is there something I'm missing?

5129987
And the skills they learn from doing that are probably more useful in the modern world than the wilderness survival stuff would have been. >_>

5130004
:rainbowlaugh: Headcanon accepted. Seriously, Starlight, ten points for charity, minus several million for good thinking.

Your formatting wouldn't work with creature tokens. Tokens aren't cards, but they can die. And I believe there are a few other complications as well. Anafenza had similar issues several years ago. And, as 5130001 noted, that's not even the most ludicrous trigger in Thrones of Eldraine.

5129995
And here I couldn't get away from the possibility that the poor kid was destined to be a for-hire dominatrix!

:rainbowderp: :trixieshiftright: :raritystarry:

I'm a bad pony and should feel bad. Tho in fairness just seeing the title of GaPJaxie's story that came out the same day kind of fed that idea, even if it had nothing to do with her.

5130010
And this is why I don't design magic cards XD

I suppose the only question about the Starlight Fillies is whether they were just a band of kids she encountered on an adventure and saved incidentally or if it was a concerted relocation effort.

Either way, the support organization for them is run by Tempest. All of them speculate what her *real* backstory is and which future she came from, each tale more outlandish than the last. It embarrasses her to no end.

Typical. Bloody typical. It took to the end of the series for someone to actually TELL these three that authority figures aren't infallible.

Also, if Book Horse didn't know them personally, she'd probably have not noticed the problem because in Equestria, being crazy doesn't make you stand out.

5129987

In part of making Sweetie Belle older, the wishing flower automatically applied eyeliner.

Another point for my theory that the wish-flower was extrapolating the CMC's adult forms from their subconscious, rather than actually accelerating their natural aging process to the desired point.

That does say something about Sweetie Belle's and Scootaloo's self-image, though, if Sweetie Belle is able to teleport ("Are you sure you aren't Twilight's sister? Ahahahahah"), and Scootaloo doesn't even take notice of not being able to fly in her wish-granted adult body. :rainbowderp:

Means that this episode doesn't explicitly state whether or not Scootaloo will be able to fly or not as an adult. :duck:

That's a darned good point. We're not seeing what they're actually going to become.....we're seeing what they THINK they'll become.

First, something I've been wondering: why not ask the aunts? Scootaloo is supposed to be living with them now. At the very least, they could have mentioned it. Like: "What about your aunts?" "They're still busy moving to Ponyville." or something.

Second: no mention of how Fluttershy guessed exactly what happened, and Twilight just went with it, then when the crusaders told her everything that happened, they just kind of rolled their eyes like "Yes, we figured it all out already."?

Hm, I'm actually looking on the episode significantly more positively after reading this. There were a number of good points, weren't there? :)
(During the episode, for me everything was largely overshadowed by "Why are the CMCs acting so immature, and looking at adulthood as they are? This would maybe have made sense back around Season 2!" and "Yes, we get it, children over here and adults over there, you can stop explicitly saying it now.")
(I also still think that my initial expectation of the episode from seeing the announcement image on EQD, closing out the CMCs' long coming of age arc by having them naturally age into their adult models or something like that, would likely have been better, particularly in context.)
But eh.
Thanks for improving my mood regarding it. :)

I was entertained by the very slightly aged-up voices, but not entirely convinced by the aged-up manestyles.

I was startled too to see Sweetie teleport, but you make an excellent point that her landing location wasn't exactly ideal. ("It doesn't matter where we teleported to. The important thing is from.")

Compulsive Cackling appears to be parallel design with Stormfist Crusader?

I like Featherweight Scooter's auto-unattach clause.

I wonder if "Being Big is All It Takes" might want a clause like "Those creatures lose all abilities"? The song was meant to be obviously wrong, right?

Magnified Image is a nice in-between between Spark Double and Quicksilver Gargantuan.

Are you planning on FICG'ing the last few Equestria Girls shorts soon? There are a few elements I'm really looking forward to seeing your takes on, especially in Cheer You On

Cozy REALLY wanted to go to the fair and convinced Grogar to give her a disguise.

Oh, by the way, I have Stingers for my Imposing Sovereigns entry that I'll hopefully get around to writing before the contest is over, and one of them hints at an alternative explanation for one of those things... and only one of those things. I should note that elven lifespans are often portrayed nonsensically even with actual elves...

Of course:

In the scene just before Biscuit unleashes Bloophy, Scootaloo's wings have disappeared entirely.

So who knows what's going on here!

Where she's going, she doesn't need wings.
