A JD Review: MLP Season 9 Episode 20 - "A Horse Shoe-In" · 8:25pm Sep 15th, 2019

The one where Trixie became a villain again.

Just for a second, then she was amazing again.

Otay, okay, oh hey! First week of no writing for me 'cause school sucks and it's drained everything from me. :ajsleepy: Anyway, I at least found time to see this episode and I found myself pleasantly surprised. We see that once Twilight becomes the ruler of Equestria, she wants Starlight to be headmare of the School of Friendship (kinda like a story I need to get back to :raritywink:). But Starlight comes to realize that she needs a vice headmare, and hijinks ensue to see if Big Mac, Octavia, Doctor Whooves, Spoiled Rich, or Trixie becomes that new vice headmare.

This was fun. Starlight was insanely adorable. Trixie was obnoxious for a bit, but she came around after Starlight yelled at her. I really do love how we're getting some closing episodes before the grand finale. One last Starlight and Trixie episode to cross off the list (still waiting for that Scootaloo flying episode). Can't wait for next week and the approaching finale!

Fun episode! 9/10! What were your thoughts?

This was a really fun and solid episode. Starlight speaking with her plant Phyllis throughout the episode was funny, as was her “Big No” moment at the very end when Trixie throws it away.

I think it is interesting that not only will Starlight be the new headmare, but Sunburst will be her vice-headstallion instead of Flurry Heart’s Crystaller, and Trixie replacing Starlight as the Studen Counselor which probably means the ending of her traveling magician career.

I am not a big fan of the closure episodes. I'm sorry, but I think MLP is one of those shows where there shouldn't be any closure episodes, especially when its the final season. MLP closures in fanfics are much better than sing it on television or on the net, that's my opinion anyways. It's still an alright episode. I'm sorry if I've upsetted anybody or anypony with my opinion(s). I just want the fandom to stay alive and not be completely done with it, especially in this site and other fanfic sites that has MLP stories.

I've seen all the episodes that were leaked and I apologize in advance if those opinions upset any of you once I post them up on my blog or when I'm commenting about it elsewhere lie here for example once all the episodes have been aired.

As much fun as I like to see how some random fan would end things I also wanna see how the actual show would end things. The fandom won't end just because the show does.

Much like every Starlight and Trixie episode this episode is a lot of fun to lost. Starlight and Trixie just have a great chemistry which really help makes their friendship a lot of fun to watch.

I do think last Star and Trix episode was a little better since Trixie was a bit more understandable in what she was doing and it was partly Starlight’s fault for not setting a time for her to meet students. Hopefully Trixie learned from this when she becomes the new counselor.

Still a really fun episode and gotta give props for Trixie standing up for Gallus and she’s been getting much better at teleporting. Actually manage a good portion of land all the way from Froggy Bottom Bog to the school and Twilight had trouble with teleporting back in season 1. Meaning at this point Trixie is a better magic user than Twilight was in Boast Busters. She’s certainly grown hasn’t she.

Starlight talking to plants and making them. I guess she’s been hanging out with AJ a little too much.

True, its just scary and sad to think about and if it does happen. I'm still a big fan of the show and the fanfics.

this was an ok episode. was much better then last week... I think? Still never bothered to rewatch that one. But yeah, I also kinda forgot who Spoiled Rich was for a second in the episode until she started mouthing off and I was like "oh yeah, fuck that pony again. Why did she try and come for this job again?"

After finally getting a chance to see this episode after a weekend excursion, the difficulty with Starlight trying to communicate with an oblivious Trixie about a problem almost felt like a story that we've seen and heard before. However, it's the scenario of which this episode took place that offers a relatable issue we've all faced at some point. From the beginning, Twilight had hinted that Starlight should be the new head-mare once Twilight's full attention is being a Princess and now it's actually going to happen. It's understandable that Starlight feels nervous about running the school by herself, but then she remembered Twilight always had help from the beginning and thus sets the stage for this episode. But then comes the real issue at hand: Relationships in the work space.

True it didn't seem hard for Twilight and her friends given that Twilight could already count on them despite already being busy with their own lives, but when Starlight had her potential applicants (One of which I'm 'glad' didn't get the job) she kind of set herself for disaster when she kept Trixie around. Amongst all the more competent applicants, Trixie didn't seem to have the means to be a vice mare yet Starlight couldn't find it in her heart to tell her. It only took till Trixie's attempt at a 'field trip' put her classmates in danger that Starlight finally snapped. And yet if it weren't for all the other hobbies applicants like Octavia and Time Turner were already doing then they probably would've taken the job. But to be fair, in a way I'm glad Sunburst took the job when he wasn't initially an applicant.

He went in not just as a friend of Starlight, but a pony who knew what he was doing and with Flurry Heart maturing his role as the Crystaller wasn't as needed as much. In the end, it was Starlight once again having to learn to communicate her feelings with Trixie. Because like Starlight, it's tough trying to have an employee who's also a friend or maybe someone more personal because those type of unions get complicated. Like if you were an executive and you had this friend who was giving insufficient work yet you find it's difficult to fire the guy (Or girl) because you've known each other for so long. One of the most realistic episodes in regards to this type of situation which I did find a slight enjoyable.

I feel like the message should've been closer to "Don't expect special treatment, just because you're friends with somebody," but otherwise, pretty solid.

Just because the show will end, doesn't mean the fandom will.

Trixie... is so fucking adorable in this screenshot!

You know, a little OJT and a sprinkle of Celestial light and Trix Pix should be fine. Nope. That spectacled Doctor Strange wannabe had to take it.

5121577 RIP Phyllis. :(

5121595 I'd rather have a canon closure then multiple fan ones, in my opinion.

5121602 Trixie's growth throughout the series has been fantastic!

5121613 Spoiled Rich just wanted to talk down to ponies because her daughter won't listen to her bull anymore.

5121674 I always do love the realistic lessons this show teaches. :)

5121850 Right?!

5121892 Sunburst is the best, tho.

I dont think anyone is gonna listen to her bull anymore.
also forgot to say this, but i LOVE that Doctor Whooves is called "Doctor Whooves" now!

Suit yourself. All the more power to you. Please forgive me if I debate about the finale later on which will be most likely, your're a good man JD.

If there was this one other gripe I had with this episode, it hit close to home when Starlight was playing 'favorites' with Trixie just because she was her best friend. I remember growing up in High School and I was always turned down from every major part I felt confident that I could portray only because the teacher always played favorites with the students. Hell, they put a guy who wasn't Asian to be the 'Chinese Henchmen' for 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' (Even though I myself am half-Japanese) and they casted me to be the butler! A flipping butler and he wasn't even a major character!

5122076 I may have missed that part. Dang it! :twilightsheepish:

5122161
yeah, its near the end before they talk to Sunburst

Did you get the Endgame reference where the Doctor talked about quantum physics leading to time travel. Great considering it came out a few months ago.

5123390 I was thinking, maybe they referenced Endgame there! I didn't know for sure! :twilightsheepish:

5123580
I'm pretty sure that's what it was.
