A JD Review: Godzilla: Minus One (2023) · 7:00am Dec 4th, 2023

Sorry for the late release of this review, but I just recently got back from the theater, and ooooooo BOY, what a film :pinkiecrazy: Let's get started.

NON-SPOILER REVIEW

Godzilla: Minus One is the first Toho-based Godzilla live-action film since 2016's Shin Godzilla, and between the two, I gotta say that Minus One just blows Shin out of the water. Minus One instantly won me over with it's setting, right after WW2 with Japan picking up the pieces following the atomic bomb attacks. And then they get a helping of seconds when Godzilla turns his attention to Tokyo to lay waste to the Japanese capital.

This plays out like a straight up horror film at times. The tense chase and action scenes with Godzilla in the ocean were spine-chilling, and just the human-like eyes is just so unnerving to me haha. The level of destruction this Godzilla causes is absolutely insane. Probably not as destructive as Shin Godzilla, but definitely close.

The human characters were actually likeable in this film, and were probably the best parts of it if I'm being honest. This just proves that human stories can work in Godzilla films if handled right. I suppose the WW2 setting definitely helped cement these as strong, likeable characters.

Oh, and easily the coolest atomic breath we've ever seen from Godzilla. :coolphoto:

Overall, I gotta give it a 10/10. A masterpiece that I highly recommend you all go out and see ASAP :yay:

SPOILER REVIEW

The story for Minus One centers around this kamikaze pilot who survived the end of WW2 without dying an honorable death, and this shame hung over him for two years, especially after he witnessed Godzilla brutally murder his fellow Japanese soldiers.

What this film achieved is remarkable: making a enthralling and believable human story, a tale of survival from the eyes of these survivors from WW2. Innocent people who witnessed the horrors of the atomic bombings only to experience something arguably even worse with Godzilla. The message of no longer having to die honorably but to fight to live was a powerful take for post-WW2 Japan, and I love how they incorporated it against their fight with Godzilla.

Can we talk about the atomic breath in this film, because HOLY CRAP that has to be the coolest atomic breath I've ever seen. His dorsal plates like jut out as he's charging up, and then slam down as he unleashes a scream of atomic power. The blast is eerily similar to a smaller atomic explosion, with the mushroom cloud and everything, and it just sucks in the surrounding destruction like a deadly vortex. Gosh, I could gush over that scene all day, it was incredibly. A theater-worthy experience :coolphoto:

Quite a few twists and turns in this film, which were appreciated. You didn't know quite what to expect next, and that's what made it so unnerving and fun, and dare I say... terrifying? This feel like a true successor to Godzilla 1954, achieving similar story beats while taking its story and characters in a bold and satisfying new direction.

Overall, I couldn't really find anything I disliked in this movie. Everything was handled so incredibly well, so I'm easily buying this on blu-ray when it's available.

Definitely a 10/10 masterpiece, and definitely worth your purchase and viewing experience! Go see it ASAP! :moustache:
