    Creating Compelling Characters

Creating a ‘good’ character is an evergreen topic in many groups on this site, so I thought it might be worth a shot to dedicate another miniguide to it. Here I’ll focus primarily on some aspects of a character’s role in a story and the ways in which these aspects affect character creation. The guide might be also a bit messier than usual as putting together these various tidbits of advice would

Handling Points of View with Grace

I’m pretty sure that all of you have read more than one story in your life, and I’d bet that most of you noticed that stories can be told from a variety of perspectives. If you prefer a somewhat fancier term, such a perspective can be also called a point of view (POV for short). Types of POVs, their usage, and common pitfalls are what’s this miniguide going to be about. Just like in case of the

Story Titles, Cover Art, and Descriptions 101

Imagine this: You wrote a story that you deem great. You may have even shown it to a few folks for beta-reading and might have it edited, so the fact the story ain’t bad is most likely not just your subjective perception. Then you publish the story. Nothing happens. No comments, a modicum of votes, and a few views. Maybe it’s just bad luck. Or maybe the story’s boring and fails to maintain the

*A deep, hopeful and jolly title* · 8:05pm Dec 26th, 2018

Such a shame I can’t think of any title that would fit that bill.
Greetings everybody,
I hope you had (and hopefully are still having) great holidays. I can say I have finally awaken from the few month-long slumber and for the time being, I can say I plan on staying active here. But more about that later.

(Fireflies by JoelletheNose)

First, there is something I need to say—a huge THANK YOU to all the 103 people that have decided to click the follow button up to now. We’ve passed the 100 follower mark on Christmas and I don’t think I could have gotten a better present from you than the avalanche of nice comments, PMs and the new people coming here :pinkiehappy:

By the way, have you ever noticed that people tend to only celebrate certain milestones, such as 100 followers, making it seem as if 99 or 101 followers were something less awesome or not worthy of mentioning? Just throwing this paradox out there.

Anyway, now to the less glorious stuff—the reasons for my absence and my broken promises. The next chapter of The Forest Pony was said to be published in early Autumn. Truth be told, I haven’t said it would be Autumn 2018, but that’s just an empty excuse. And I’m still not sure when it’s going to come out, but I can say one thing—as long as I’m alive, I plan on finishing the story.

So, let’s sum it all up as “life got in the way.” In greater detail: I have had a few exams coming up, yet I recklessly agreed to tutor biology at high school to prepare the kids for the biology olympiad—basically trying to teach them how to think and to cram all that I learned in eight years into their heads in a few months. So, stories were pushed to the sidelines due to this.

Then some health problems in the family started, first with my grandma having a lot of issues (Luckily she is better now!), then my own knees started to give out and strange bruises appeared all over my body. My hair also started turning gray rapidly... apparently issues with some new medication. Naturally, I was in no mood to write or to even visit the site. If you contacted me during that period, you may have either received no answer or encountered grumpy me or a friend of mine that was temporarily in charge. I deeply apologize for all this!

When my state slowly started to get better, I relieved my stress through writing random pieces of stories, partially rewrote Inside the Forbidden Room, even started a fic about filly Twilight and Princess Celestia in wintertime (not sure if/when will that be finished) and passed a few important exams, notably did a Cambridge English certificate at the C2 level—which basically means that my knowledge of the language is on the level of a native speaker. Well, if the piece of paper says so, I’m not going to complain... And so I plowed through the duties that piled up on my table and that leads us to the story of today

If you made it this deep into the blog, you have my admiration for putting up with my rant. Anyway, that was all I wanted to say and I look forward to “meeting” you again in another blog or Author’s note in a story.

Signing out,
~Ever

PS: If you want to share anything good or bad that has happened to you during this time, or want just a piece of advice or a simple friendly chat, feel free to shoot me a comment or a PM. I’ll be glad to help and get back into the flow of things.

I'll just say Merry Christmas (a bit late) and may next year be more to your liking!

Thanks  2018 wasn’t exactly a bad year for me, and I’m kinda comforting myself with the fact that many people surely had to deal with something far worse and had prevailed as well.

How were your Christmas, if I may ask?

4986402
Does this year have to really be bad in order to wish for next one to be better? Call me greedy but I like to strive from good to better.

And I don't know, I didn't yet have had mine.

4986403
That actually a pretty good point!

Interesting. When do you celebrate it? We do so on the eve of 24th.

4986407
On the 25th December! Of Julian calendar. Which means 7th January. And yes, that means that then we have a second new year on 14th January.

started turning gray rapidly

I knew this all was about your female proud! :pinkiecrazy: :rainbowwild:

Seriously, I am glad N.Ever is back again:pinkiecrazy: Taking over Fimf and planning world domination... business as usuall

4986408
Wow, I learn something new everyday

4986410
I actually think the gray strands of hair make me look more serious and wise :rainbowwild:

4986412
Now I wonder what you will learn tomorrow :twilightsheepish:

4986415
Given what I’m reading right now and what its next chapter is, it’s probably gonna be something about amphibian genomics :pinkiecrazy:

4986416
Sounds fascinating

4986413
I think the blue suits you better:rainbowwild: But I admit maybe it wasn't the medicine, maybe it was that you had to deal with me, GTR, and MV that turned you gray! :trollestia:

Awesome job reaching so many followers, Ever! :pinkiehappy: Hope your holidays are going well!

Nothing to exciting has happened in your absence. I kept your evil biology castle nice and clean and got the draw bridge working again. :derpytongue2:

I became a pre-read for another’s persons story. I finally read all of MV’s story, or at least what’s currently ready to read. He’s been helping me with my own little work here and there.

Oh and I got your biology chemicals ready for when you’re ready to take over Fim. I’ll leave them in the secret place in the castle. :rainbowwild:

Also the grey hair just means you’ve evolved further as biology master! :pinkiegasp:

All jokes aside, glad to see you back!

Glad to hear that. Congratulations.

Hey that was the birthday surprise! :pinkiegasp: What else can we get her now?:raritycry:

4986416
I missed you on here.

4986429
Ahh, thank you for all the kind words, as well as the draw bridge and chemicals!
:raritywink:

Glad to hear from you again and to know you are still in the trade

4986440
Thanks a lot, buddy

4986644
Thanks! Haven’t heard from you in a while, sir

4986650
Sorry about that, just have to revive my writing passion again then get back to my stories, I was just discouraged because my stories are struggling and I do not have anyone to help proof read and help me write.

4986674
I’m sorry to hear that :fluttershysad: I know there were some problems in your stories, but nothing that wouldn’t be unfixable, all that it needs is time, energy and experience. So, if you need a helping hoof, I know where to find one

I'm glad to hear you're free from all of that, and congrats on your certificate!:raritystarry:

4986825
Thanks a lot, my friend!

4986676
You do? Can you speak to someone about this and/or would you like to perhaps help friend?

4986979
I’ve meant myself in the first place. However, if there is something that’s not my strong suit, I know who to ask

4987004
Thank you so much God bless you for your help.:scootangel::twilightblush::twilightsmile:

I will speak to you when I can and we can start.

I am so glad you're doing all right and well over there. Congratulations on your achieving more than a 100 followers! :pinkiehappy:

I'm definitely looking forward with The Forest pony very soon and in regards to your ordeal with tutoring High school students with everything you know for 8 years now, kinda reminds me of my Accounting professor cramming me and my class everything he knew in just months too with a rushed schedule :twilightsheepish: not really a pleasant and encouraging moment for us Accountants.

Well I may or may not be looking forward with your side stories (definitely though), I am more glad to see you and your Grandma are better than ever, "Malakas at Malusog pa kayo" (Tagalog for, You're both still strong and healthy). And a definite Congratulations on your ceritficate from Cambridge, you earned it :raritystarry:

Anyways, it's so great tinhear from you again, (late) Merry Christmas :rainbowwild:

4987644
Thanks a lot for so many kind words, brother

kinda reminds me of my Accounting professor cramming me and my class everything he knew in just months too with a rushed schedule :twilightsheepish: not really a pleasant and encouraging moment for us Accountants.

I'm trying not to rush it, by now just opting to teach them the essential stuff. I also got them a pdf copy of Campbell's Biology, that might actually teach them more than I could, if they find the courage to open it in the first place. It tends to bite if you don't stroke its spine :raritywink:
But since the girls that signed up for the "class" haven't run away yet, I'm probably doing something right :twilightsheepish:

Well, Happy (non-late) New Year! :moustache:

4987648
If they know what's good for them then they better open that pdf you sent, I should know, my new Accounting teacher who is watching over us this second semester does the same strategy like you do with her own pdf and it's do or die with it :trixieshiftleft:

If they're keen and still there then they are up to the task and you're doing a great job then  I know a lot who'd back out and even joke about the class they took initially but start backing out once they got a taste of the Introduction :facehoof:

Happy (late) New Year as well, few more days :trollestia:

Yikes, I didn't know your health issues were that serious. Have the issues improved? If they were caused by a medication, then hopefully your doctor/pharmacist fixed the issue.

4990398
Luckily the worst issues didn’t last that long. As for the medication, they just lowered the dose and prescribed me some painkillers, “in case I feel unwell again” :facehoof: At least the bruises have been slowly fading for the past few weeks.
