FIRST!!
So we get another Celestia episode? I'm down for it as long as we get to see more of our favorite Princess of the Sun!
What say you, fellow Bronies?
4849114
....what?
I really liked this episode (especially the reconciliation between Twilight and Celestia and Trixies little "cameo")
While I don’t ship it, that is still one beautiful and adorable picture!
4849118
All praise our God Emperor Pony.
NINTH!!!!!
Tia episode!
So if Celestia's always wanted to be in a play, was she living vicariously through the Mane Six all the way back in "Hearth's Warming Eve"?
Am I the only one that read that synopsis as Twilight and Celestia becoming lovers?
You know clop stories start out with a synopsis like this.
prancing celestia. now i've seen it all
I'm gonna take a wild guess: Celestia can't act for shit.
Giddy Tia is so cute!
and it seems we're gonna get some backstory. bonus!
spike is on the ball. and of course rarity will freak out over the costume.
I cant get the Charlie Brown Christmas Special out of my head while watching this. Any moment I'm expecting Linus to come out and tell us the true meaning of Christmas.
4849138
you definitaly called it.
"Yeah, but you're not a princess princess."
After four years, the show admits it.
4849146
she's a princess princess not a queen princess.
Seriously, Celestia's rolling 1's on all her perception and speech checks.
MERRY CHRISTMAS CHARLIE BROWN!!
This is really the kind of episode we have needed for Celestia since season 1.
4849149
then twilight followed suit.
*Sees Pinkie using fireworks as the sun*
Goddamn it, Pinkie.
My reactions:
YAY! Celestia episode!
Wow, way to make Celestia feel old...

OMG GIDDY CELESTIA IS SOOO CUTE!!! EEEEEEEEEEE!!!
At first I tilted my head at the idea of Celestia never being in a play even as a child... but then I remember that being a Princess she probably had many other duties that deprived her of the chance to experience such a thing even as a child... kind of makes me feel sorry for her in that case...
Now that I think about it...

Twilight, you're metaphorically shoving your hoof waaaay down your throat right now...
OH NO, NOT BIG BERTHA!
Starlight, don't give the fandom more excuses to throw a fit.

Wow, Murphy's Law is going to come down on you girls HARD.
Well well well, a bit of a continuity nod to the Journal of The Royal Sisters... I like it!

Celestia's ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE outshines even Luna! And it's hilarious!

Aaaaand Celestia can't act.... oooooh boy...
Am I the only one who thinks this kind of cringe comedy works perfectly? This is just too hilarious!!
Twilight freaking out as usual.... AJ is being the only sane one here.
Celestia just tugged at Twilight's heartstrings... this is gonna be painful to watch.... MUST KEEP WATCHING!!

Where the heck did Pinkie get a giant marshmallow?!
OOOOOH CELESTIA IS BRINGING SO MUCH CRINGE, I LOVE IT!
And Spike being the snarkiest one here just makes it better!

Y'see Celestia, this is why you're never invited to play charades...

Twilight, Starlight, you might want to have a little "talk" with Trixie about those fireworks after all of this...
....welp, Twilight's getting banished to the moon.... or the sun....
...and AJ is standing behind hair with a giant "I TOLD YOU SO" sign.
RD? Not the best time to be proud of yourself...
derpicdn.net/img/view/2018/4/28/1719119__safe_screencap_pinkie+pie_rainbow+dash_rarity_spike_horse+play_spoiler-colon-s08e07_discovery+family+logo.png
Oh sure, shove Spike on stage to take the heat, thanks guys.

Okay, this little moment between Celestia and Twilight is genuinely sweet...
Celestia: Taking command of the situation like a BOSS!

....and she's a surprisingly good motivational speaker!
I get the feeling the hecklers assumed this was a comedy...

Yay! More development for Fluttershy!

Oh Celestia, you TROLL! HAHAHAHA!!
Well, this episode was relatively amusing. I give it a 7.5 out of 10.
4849153
this was an absolute gem of an episode
oh and THE JOURNAL OF THE TWO SISTERS is canon.
For one of the smartest ponies in the show, Twi really held the idiot ball here. To her credit, though, she had both great dialogue and expressions
Not to mention Applejack being the voice of reason the entire time.
Freaking Pinkie Pie and her nonstop antics...The fireworks bit was hilarious, but not as hilarious as Celestia's lack of acting. Kinda reminded me of my time in my Fundamentals of Acting class in college.
Celestia, Raspberry Beret, Ocellus, and Yona were the cutest this episode.
Poor Spike being used to stall for time...
Overall, this was a pretty good episode.
4849157
It was quite great to finally give some true character development to Celestia, usually what we have is just implied.
Rarity: "Silk!"
Me: "So it begins."
Why, exactly, didn't they have the changeling transform into anything? Why did they put her in a costume? She could have played starswirl or some other major character. I am still having a hard time figuring out how Celestia was having such a hard time with acting considering the play is about her and probably what she did and said. I am very confused with this.
I love this episode!
It was a fun episode -- the sight of Celestia prancing excitedly at the beginning was worth it alone -- but the premise kind of bothers me. A Royal Problem established that she is practically acting as it is when she's working. As such, it is kind of strange for her to suddenly be so bad at it. Especially the parts she does on a regular basis, such as being spoken loud enough to be heard, or emoting.
Although it was fun to her use The Royal Canterlot Voice.
I didn't like this episode
4849159
Aspects of it anyway...
4849161
Well, "Celestial Advance" and "A Royal Problem" did so as well...
4849160
Well, a bit of leeway in this episode man because it's Princess Celestia were talking about. You know? The ruler of all the question who is practically like a second mother to her? The only character in the show she respects as much as her is Starswirl, so it kind of makes sense for Twilight act like this in this case.
This is an episode I will very much enjoy rewatching.
So, highlights from this episode after my first go-through:
We finally know how old Celestia is -- given that she's been rising the sun for 1,111 years and is probably not much older than that from a cosmic point of view, she's likely a millennium, a century and some change in age. We also have confirmation that she can use the Royal Canterlot Voice.
Trixie engages in black market commerce of experimental explosives.
Celestia is one of those people who get very, very calm when they're pissed.
Applejack played the part of the exasperated straight man beautifully.
Fluttershy is the best, and I maintain that she's probably grown more as a character than anyone else in the core cast.
4849179
true. but if the sun aspect is canon i wonder what else is.
4849174
To be fair, she's had actual experience when it comes to "acting on the job" since she's been doing it for over a thousand years. In this case however she's acting on stage, a new experience for her.
So... overall, the episode had a great concept. It's nice to see Celestia so openly enthusiastic about something, and a rare opportunity to further flesh out her character.
I just think it should've revolved around something that isn't already so similar to her established skillset. She's been ruling publicly for over a thousand years, and she has the patience of a saint on top of being generally very perceptive. So it's a really tough sell when they want us to believe that:
And to top it all off, she's suddenly a great actress again when she switches back to Trollestia mode at the end.
Actually, it's starting to look far more believable that Celestia was pretending to be a bad actress all along just to see what it would take to get Twilight to say something... Seriously, I can't decide whether that makes the episode better or worse.
On another note, Spike's the real MVP in this episode. He was the first to spot the flaw in Twilight's plan, and he was hauling ass when stalling for time, taking hits from fruity missiles and then narrating the play. As usual, he's a champ when in a supporting role.
Maybe they should've just hired their most experienced Celestia impersonator:
derpicdn.net/img/view/2016/5/19/1157980__safe_screencap_angel+bunny_testing+testing+1-dash-2-dash-3_angelestia_rabbit.png
4849183
there is a bit of a difference between the two.
4849160
Holding the idiot ball is her default and has been for a very long time. At this point, intelligence is very much an informed attribute, along with most of her supposed virtues.
4849179
This excuse kind of wears a bit thin after five seasons.
4849182
The sun thing is, as you said.
The events focusing on the Tree of Harmony aren't, as they have Starswirl leading the Sisters to the Tree. We know from "Shadow Play" that the Tree of Harmony only came into existence after Starswirl disappeared, so that could not have happened in that manner.
On a more minor note, I believe the Journal also has Clover as a mare, whereas "Forgotten Friendship" established him as a stallion.
Everything else is still up in the air. The zebras living in/beyond the Everfree cannot work with the currently canon geography, but then again a lot can happen in a thousand years, including large-scale migrations.
Anyone note that the art piece used for the cover of this site blog post is a Twilestia piece?
4849195
Not really, no matter how much time has passed that image Twi has of her is still there. It's actually more than character for her to act this way.
4849181
I would say this also narrows down the time of when Equestria was founded by quite a bit. Since both Clover the Clever and Celestia were being tutored by Star Swirl, as well as the fact that if 5 unicorns were completely losing their magic per day to raise the sun, then that would be 1825 magicless unicorns a year. I can't imagine it being more than a few decades at most before Celestia discovered her talent.
4849196
with them implamenting more from the comics a lot is still up in the air. though i love how their expanding lore through more than one method.
