It used to be that American kids got presents on their birthday and on Christmas, and that was it. Therefore, toy industries made half of the year's sales in December. I don't know if this is still true; it was almost true of the computer game industry 20 years ago. Whatever the fraction is, it's a lot.
Hasbro relies on My Little Pony for, I think, just about all of their tie-in toy profits. Say a third of all sales are in December. This means the toys have to be on the shelves, and kids primed to ask for them, by December 1. The fall season has only 3 episodes before December 1.
This means that one-third of Hasbro's sales for the year will be primarily of toys based on the new characters introduced in those 3 episodes of My Little Pony. That means a @#$-load of new characters stuffed into those episodes.
Expect them to be sickeningly cute.

Sounds exactly like another round of Princess Sell-Some-Toys Cadence. We can only hope the episodes turn out as awesome as that one did.
And there will be much fanon. And it will be good. And strange. And, at times, disturbing.
Alternatively, they could have the first two episodes be full of crystal ponies, and then ignore them for the rest of the season.

What do you mean by tie-in toy?
I'm going to be getting a niece or nephew this Christmas thanks my brother and his fiance. Now I'll have an excuse to buy Hasbro products without raising suspicion, goddess being a closet brony is tough when one wants to support the company. I just wish I knew in advance if I should get a Pony plushie or a Spike Plushie (I've seen a few of the latter). Or maybe transformers bedsheets? I sound like an old biddy going on ... I'll shut up now.
(Not at the crystal ponies themselves, but because futzing with the formula to sell more merchandise is rarely a good idea.)

Pfft, but let's face it my friend. All franchise, may it be cartoon or not, ultimately exist only to sell merchandise so I wont be surprise if that was the case with the crystal ponies. Look at video for case in point, ironically enough it stars Tabitha St. Germain(Rairty) on the show and its animated by the Vancouver-based Studio B (Guess which show that crew would be working on next)
