So, what do Flicker's swords look like? · 4:13pm Aug 6th, 2017
Maybe not what you think. Unicorn blades have no need for grips or guards.
She's looking at you. Yes you. And she is judging you with her eyes. There is no escape.
Maybe not what you think. Unicorn blades have no need for grips or guards.
Actually they would need guards, because the point of it is catching an enemy's blade sliding across your own. If they don't have a guard, there's a high chance the wielder will still be hurt even after blocking.

So, when the sword is held yards away and the weider has a shield spell, guards are needed?
How?
To protect arms?

I'm not an expert on unicornian telekinetic swordsmanship, so I can't really tell. The one thing I know is holding your swords yards away from yourself is a good way to have someone get too close and shank you.

Think of the duel scene in Masks.
Distances were kept, until they weren’t. At close range, it is easy enough to turn the curved blade and use the hard edge of the back to parry. With blade and telekinesis, you push incoming blows away from you, or divert them in another direction.
It seems to me that it heavily depends on how unicorn telekinesis works. How much power can they focus on a small area? How slippery are things with telekinesis? A grip both is easy to hold, has a lever action/thrust as part of the design of using it to swing/thrust the blade, and focuses that power into the smaller/thinner portions of the blade.
Do they control every part of the blade simultaneously, or just a small portion at once?
Aha, excellent.
I'm always glad when people realise that swinging a sword around with your head is a stupid idea, and realise that swords would mostly be a unicorn's instrument. I mean, seriously.
If you bear in mind that, thanks to telekinesis, your weapon can take any shape, you can get incredibly inventive with them.
I fear for what Rarity might be able to threaten with her ability to independently manipulate a whole lot of items at once, and her access to a vast array of pins and needles...

Depends what is needed and the unicorn involved. The blade can be held anywhere or everywhere.
Given that things that weaken, disrupt or even outright shut down magic exist and that the underwatch faces Grogar's exotic creations with a potentially huge range of abilities having a weapon that doesn't need TK would probably be smart.
4625604
Yes. This is why crossbows, rifles, and projectile weapons exist.

Honestly I imagine telekinesis used by an expert would look somewhat similar to this in a way.
[edit] And this one:
Hmm Don't know if that is the best weapon for a fully telekinetic user. Having something floating the cutting action would not be limited to the typical swing used in human combat... hmm have to think about that...probably a needle like item would be more effective...
Honestly for a unicorn that weapon is genius,
You can block with that, and if you twirl it the sharpened edge will cut, the dull edge tear. Brilliant.
Sigh...people let's get something straight here, relying on TK in a sword fight is a bad idea solely based on the fact that if your opponent manages to trap your blade then you are dead no matter what because any opponent with any amount of training will see this as an opening and will fucking kill you.
You might as well use a circular saw.
To complement those, he needs a glaive or two. Not these kind:

Rather, this kind:

They look pretty cool!

he has two.
4625987
Which just makes it worse as he's splitting his attention...Remember Twilight's training with Zecora...Unicorns need to be able to focus to use their magic...and using two blades like that is going to split up their focus...and don't you get me started with TK having a range of effectiveness just like any weapon.
And I'm just getting warmed up here.

The story actually offers up compelling reasons and explanations to all of this. I am not going to bother writing it all out here.
4625925
Krull!! Bit of an 80's movie but I liked it.
One would think they be useless if the unicorn depletes their mana reserves. Can't hold that in your mouth lest you have a good dentist
4626080
Minimal energy use. Allows for longer field expeditions. Spells are far, far more draining.
4626085
Well of course, but say your in a fight at the end of a long adventure perhaps. Or just any situation where you can't use magic.
4626226
Hoof-fu becomes an option, as mentioned in the story.
Pretty much what I pictured

Hmm how do you trap one blade like that? it doesn't have anything that can be "trapped" in the usual sense. Additionally it is NOT close to the user in the same way a normal sword is... The whole technique for sword wielding with telekinesis for an unicorn has to be RADICALLY different from anything we can be even remotely familiar, that's why I'm slightly dubious about the current shape as the best and especially on the evolution of that kind of blade... but binding and trapping are relatively out as issues... with the amount of degree of freedom given to a floating blade there is almost no way to "trap" it.
Allow me to ask a potentially dumb question...
If one has TK, why not simply squeeze on something vital - carotid artery; windpipe; heart; etc...
Or for that matter, sufficient acceleration would be devastating - and it wouldn't necessarily have to be to the whole body; jerking the head back and forth can cause severe brain injuries.

Some things resist magic, as shown.
Well, yes... but for that which isn't TK resistant? I imagine any higher level baddie is going to have invested in magic resistance for their person and immediate personal effects, but your common pony probably hasn't.
I would also tend to imagine that magic resistance is rather a bit like the cat-and-mouse game played by hackers and OS vendors... one side trying any new exploit that they can, the other patching weaknesses as best they can...
the guard on a sword isn't really used to protect the wielders hand, that is part of why they exist, but the guard is mostly used to catch your opponent's blade. This lets you take advantage of new holes in their defense. Likewise pommels are important not only for holding the hilt together but also for bludgeoning your opponent.
It's fine if you don't want a traditional design. Just thought I would explain why those things exist.
What I want to know is, why single edged and not double edged?
4626405
I'm not thinking in the usual sense...if there is a way to move a sword with magic there is a way to pin it down with magic...
4626528
Well you could grab it with magic at the same way the actual wielder is doing but then it goes to a simple check of force between the two. I may be misremembering but also it is difficult to "wrestle" away a thing held in the magic of someone else.
That said a bind with that kind of sword is almost impossible.
