And now with a Plague Inc. scenario! · 12:32pm Jun 29th, 2017

Celefin has put together a Plague Inc. game scenario based on the ongoing story Pandemic. It can be found here on the Steam Workshop. It looks like a good deal of time and effort has been put into this scenario, so if you're a fan of this game, please go check it out. Naturally, it's an adaptation to better suit the game engine, but I think it's been put together rather well.

I like Plague Inc regardless, so...

I very much hope so ;) :twilightblush:

Is that game ready to be played, or no? Caus i cant seem to play it yet

That's weird, because it's ready to play. Try searching for it directly in the game, it's on the second page of 'unusual'. You'll also find if you search for 'magic' or 'pony' or 'mlp'. If that doesn't work, then i don't know.

Do I need to have Plague.Inc downloaded to play the scenario? That may be what's wrong, I don't have that game downloaded, though i am subscribed to the Pandemic is Magic workshop item that you linked here

Yes, you need Plague Inc in your Steam library.
If you don't have it, you can pick it up for under 10$ right now :b

Ah, good to know, thanks

So that was fun. Research didn't slow down due to complacency and hoofedness as much as I expected and it got up to 96% to being cured, but I won. It was amusing how twilight and starlight only showed up after I had two and a half billion infected as opposed to the story's... hundreds of thousands? Millions? I don't remember.

Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the comment!

The scenario creator has its limits. Twilight and Starlight showing up so late is down to the mechanics: I wanted to make the jump in research they cause to stand out, but when that happens too early on in the scenario it becomes impossible to beat. Depending on what further events trigger, research is sped up even more later on after all.

A workaround could be to make their influence felt gradually by triggering research funding increases country by country instead of a simple jump in overall research speed. It still won't work when they show up after a million have been infected, but it might make it possible to bring them in a lot earlier. I'll check that.

The impact of hoovedness on research speed is dialled up as far as the scenario creator will allow. It has a significant (but variable) effect, but at that point research is usually progressing very fast. I explain it by assuming Twilight recruits helpers and teaches unicorn researchers how to do their job. Did you get the mind magic event with Starlight?

It's not ideal, but I've played it a hundred times or so to get the balancing right while not sacrificing the story or the playability. Hmm... I could try and put in an invisible event (or government action) in there to put an additional brake on research speed after the forehooves mutation. It is something that has bugged me as well.

Okay, thanks for taking time to comment and give feedback! I'll look into what could be done to improve the scenario according to your input. Out of interest: did you get the two Sunset events? Because those two keep on refusing to work reliably. 'Fur Affinity' is another one that doesn't behave the way it should, as in triggering very late and long past the point where it shouldn't trigger at all. At least it triggers though. Oh and what difficulty did you play on?

I played on normal since I only rarely touch the game. I did get starlight's event about mind control and shimmer's events about the confrontation and the ascension. I don't remember seeing a fur affinity one though, what was that one? I think that's all the things you asked about.

Some of the explanations were obvious in hindsight. I didn't put a lot of thought into the fact that if TS had shown up any earlier I probably would have lost. It was fun though.

I have tried four times and each time I keep being beaten by Twilight. What am I doing wrong? What order am I messing up? I want to know how to beat this to be honest. I really, really do.

I try to raise infectivity high so I can get into all the nations first. And then try to go after the Pony traits.

Maybe I need to beat more items. I just bought the game so I only have fungus unlocked so I seem to have a Bacteria at the moment.

Do I need to beat more items? I would like feed back on this.

Maybe, but you've made me think about the mechanics. I've spent a lot of time on this because I had to learn how to do it first. TS was implemented early on and I wasn't quite as sure about what I was doing as I am now, so I'm sure I could improve it. When you're working alone you often miss some points or perspective, so thanks for this little feedback chat. Much appreciated.

Good to know the Sunset events worked. That's a lot of bonus DNA you won't have otherwise which makes it quite a bit tougher. Fur Affinity requires the traits 'Tail' and 'Dourine' and that the infected percentage is under 40%. It's one of my favourites :b

I honestly don't know for sure, but it shouldn't have an impact on the scenario because ETS is defined as virus and you don't get to chose a different pathogen at the beginning.

As to what you're 'doing wrong': trying to get infectivity up and spread into all countries is the way to do it. You have to ration your DNA a little though and not just evolve everything that boosts it. ETS should be severe enough that you receive at least two DNA per country, three is better. That's a balancing act of course since it might get you shut out of a country if severity increases too fast.

Concentrate on evolving transmission and abilities - since ETS is a virus, it evolves symptoms rather fast and the mutation rate increases with every new transmission vector. Only use DNA on disease symptoms to get a boost early on (e.g. sneezing or coughing can be a good investment). Evolving pony traits needs to be balanced with hindering research. You need the two 'antigenic shift' in the abilities as a minimum. Then there are symptoms that set back and slow research, e.g. Dourine or Equine Encephalitis. They can be a good investment when things get dicey.

In general, traits that say 'hard/difficult to cure' in their description do this - but don't try to evolve them all early on: the cure setback is a percentage value, meaning that a 8% cure may be set back to 6% or 7% by evolving 'Dourine', but an 80% cure will easily be reduced to 70% or less. it always pays to read the descriptions carefully. Something like 'hard to concentrate' probably slows down research and may also lead to combined effects.

Most importantly though you'll have to start killing people in earnest as soon as you have infected all countries, otherwise there are too many researchers. Also, killing generates DNA and the pony traits are expensive. The pony traits have the effect of lowering lethality though, so don't fall into the trap of happily evolving them and suddenly finding yourself with a non-lethal disease that doesn't generate any DNA any more. A workaround is to save up enough DNA to evolve several pony traits in a row and then follow up with something deadly to get lethality up again.

I've made the scenario flexible enough so that there isn't a one true way of playing it, but these are the things to keep in mind. You could try and give it a go with aiming at the normal victory of simply killing everybody. That should give you a feel for how it works, and also a nice final event for Twilight.

Whew.
Hope this essay helps in your transformation endeavours!

I just picked up Plague Inc, and immediately thought of trying to make a scenario based off of it when I saw the scenario creator. But, since this was already made, and it's amazing, I'm satisfied.

Getting the alternative win condition was crazy difficult. It took several tries. My first game, all the pony transformations up to fur mutated naturally, but all my games after that, they never mutated at all. Really annoying. But I eventually figured out a strategy that let me keep going long enough for the Sunset events to trigger and give me all the points I needed.

Thank you! Just the right comment to have your first coffee of the day to.

I'm also happy that it seems that I got the balancing right for other people and not just for me! Successful transformation was supposed to be a challenge, I think it's much more satisfying that way. I'm the creator and I don't win every time, even on normal. On brutal it's maybe two out of five games, so it's actually still fun for myself. ;)

Would you mind telling me your strategy? I've found three so far, one of which I hadn't planned for. I'm also happy those two events worked for you, because they almost never trigger when I play and I have no idea why.

Thanks for playing and for your kind words, it really means a lot.

My winning strategy nearly didn't work. I don't remember exactly how completed the cure was, but it was very close. One game, that I almost beat, the cure got completed right before the Sunset events which I immediately used to buy a bunch of mutations, but I couldn't reinfect all the cured people before the new cure was completed.

I initially bought all the of 'calm' mutations group, to reduce severity so it didn't get noticed. Then I got a few of the mutation-speed-increasing mutations, and then focused on getting the pony transformation mutations. Once the disease got noticed, I got the mutations that decrease cure speed, and the last of the mutation speed mutations. Then it was a matter of finishing the transformation mutations, while controlling the random mutations to prevent it from killing people too quickly. I found that early on, low severity was the priority, in the middle, it was high infectivity, and by the end, moderate lethality.

4589543
Heh. This is really cool because I've never tried this stealthy and cautious strategy since I didn't think it would work. I've used the 'calm' group to adjust things, but not as core approach and I've also almost never devolved stuff.

Thanks for that feedback! I'll have to try this out.
