Niche' game markets · 6:18pm Jun 22nd, 2017

The banner ad which appears here is currently visible on FIMFic's front page, just below the Feature box.

...I have some questions.

* About this 'you' getting eaten thing. You do mean in the game, right? I'm not going to get home and find a suspiciously roaring package?
* What's the competition like? Are there other games where I can get eaten by lions? What if I prefer to be eaten by a bear? Why are you neglecting the bear market? Don't you care about the poor hungry bears? What is wrong with you? BEAR HATER!
* How would you describe the overall category of gameplay? Is this a physics game where I'm trying to launch myself and there's a lion's mouth in the area? How about a maze game where the player has to work their way through the digestive system? Have you considered doing this as a platformer? How about a FLE: First Lion Eater?

And of course:

* Is being eaten by lions something you're trying to avoid, or something you're trying to accomplish?

I'm not clicking. You can't make me.
$3.10 to the Project Wonderful ad people for Anything Else gets it off the front page.

Eaten by lions? Maybe it's First Christians Simulator?

How about a maze game where the player has to work their way through the digestive system?

The last level would be a bit shitty...

Maybe it's First Christians Simulator?

Well, if we're going Very First, then that's TF2, every time you get a Spy behind you. (You only thought he was on your side...) Maybe it's the return of Super Bonk.

Warning: look up YouTube playthroughs of Super Bonk AT YOUR OWN RISK. Completely safe for work. Really bad for your sanity.

... There are no words.

That's a really interesting link. Words fail me.

Hey, lions gotta eat.

i've seen that advertisement on a different site, a long time ago. i never clicked it...

So the experience of being Trixie, but the lion doesn't have wings or a scorpion tail?

And so Gazelle Simulator 2017 gets the Estee Bump.

Oh wow, I remember playing that game seven or eight years ago. See the ad on webcomic sites from time to time and it's always nice to see that it's still around.

The ad seems rather plain, but I'd say it's pretty effective actually. You see, it's a text based game, so if that ad doesn't make you curious then chances are you weren't the target audience anyway.

And yes, getting eaten by lions is a big part of the game. And every time you level up, they find a new way to get a drop on you.

If you like to read lots of text about completely absurd concepts and jokes with lots of lampshading and tropes (and if you don't, why are you here), you really should. I don't know how it's been growing since I last played it, but it didn't seem like the kind of game that would age poorly.

looks like a improbable island ad, its a nice little text based game thats free (but deletes your player if you dont play for 3 months to save space) its a amusing distraction, also the goal is to NOT get eaten by the lion (who is a sneaky basterd)

I was gonna go all Rush To Judgment on it and guess that being eaten by lions is an unavoidable part of the game, and...

* You play as a ghost for the rest of it.
* You go back in time to some point important to being eaten by lions.
** Maybe correct what you initially did that got you eaten by lions. ("Oh boy...")

But I guess it's been positively identified.

I see this advert on a semi-regular basis on Giant in the Playground's ad banner.

Never been tempted to click on it.

My favorite game banner of all time was probably for Improbable Island. "I lost 20 pounds in just ONE DAY by getting my LEGS EATEN BY LIONS!"

Ahem. Terminology, please. Someone who objects to being eaten by lions is an Eatist. The lowly scum would probably not object to being eaten by bears (the bastards), but being eaten by lions is just too food/prey specific for them.

Eating is too good for them.

"Then the biting things come. There are the small biting things, who run circles around your children. There are the large biting things, who jump out of gullies and from on top of rocks, who knock down the cows and tear out their throats. And there are all kinds of biting things in between. You do not have the kind of magic that can stop this."

King of Dragon Pass. 10/10 would ritually reenact being a cow getting mauled by lions again.

(For real though don't try that one, Uralda worshippers tend to not actually be that durable, and it turns out that if you die in the Godrealm, you die in real life. Maybe if they've got killer stats to shortcut the whole thing?)

What if I prefer to be eaten by a bear? Why are you neglecting the bear market? Don't you care about the poor hungry bears?

Three words (letters?):
DLC
:trollestia:

That looks like Improbable Island to me. To answer your questions in order:

* About this 'you' getting eaten thing. You do mean in the game, right? I'm not going to get home and find a suspiciously roaring package?

The ad does mean in the game, however, Improbable Island is not a mail screening service and CavemanJoe cannot guarantee that you won't find a suspiciously roaring package.

* What's the competition like? Are there other games where I can get eaten by lions? What if I prefer to be eaten by a bear? Why are you neglecting the bear market? Don't you care about the poor hungry bears? What is wrong with you? BEAR HATER!

If you prefer to be eaten by bears, there is at least one encounter with a bear strapped to the back of another bear.

* How would you describe the overall category of gameplay? Is this a physics game where I'm trying to launch myself and there's a lion's mouth in the area? How about a maze game where the player has to work their way through the digestive system? Have you considered doing this as a platformer? How about a FLE: First Lion Eater?

I would describe it as Legend of the Green Dragon, but more absurdist. Or like Kingdom of Loathing, but entirely text based and with a somewhat different bent of humor.

* Is being eaten by lions something you're trying to avoid, or something you're trying to accomplish?

If you are eaten by a lion you will wake up on the failboat (population: the Watcher, and contestants who have failed miserably). This is something most players prefer to avoid, but CavemanJoe isn't your dad and won't tell you what to do.

I recommend giving it a shot. It's free to play and won't cost you anything but time.

If you're a terrible person make sure to pick up the Budget Horse mount from Mike's Chop Shop in NewHome. It's not great as a mount, but it's cheap (only two cigs!) and gets better (and worse) over time.

I should also mention that there are quite a few lions in improbable island. In fact, there's one for each player level (it goes 1-15 then circles back around) They tend to get progressively sneakier.

At level one, it's a lion. At level two, you encounter some sort of goblin--which a lion then ambushes and eats before facing you. At level five, there's this:

A very tall man approaches you, wearing a leather trenchcoat and a large hat that casts his face into shadow.
"Excuse me, do you have the time?" he asks, in a rather nervous and timid voice.
"Sorry, pal," you reply. "Watches are hard to come by, 'round here."
"Is that all you wanted me to say?" responds the tall man. "Can I go now? Please? Oh God, no! Don't eat me! DON'T EAT ME!" The tall man pulls the homemade tape recorder out of his jacket and bats ineffectually at the "STOP" button with his huge, unwieldy paws. "AAAAAGH!" he continues, shaking the tape recorder. "AAAAAAH FUCK AAAAH MY FEET!" As you ready your weapon the tall man hurls the tape recorder to the ground, his hat coming loose and exposing his long, luxurious mane. He stamps on the tape recorder until the screaming and crunching noises stop, then turns to you, growls, and pounces.
Sneaky bastard .

At higher character levels, the lions are exploiting game mechanics. It looks like you found a supply crate, and uses the exact same formatting, but you find "0 Medkits[,] 0 Ration Packs[,] 1 lion! Sneaky bastard!".

There are also lions in sheep's clothing, lions in unconvincing lion suits, lion sandwiches, trapdoor lions, and even lions in your underwear...but not in flowerpots. Lions can't fit in flowerpots. That would be silly.

That ad immediately looked quite familiar, and it took me a while to twig - long enough that everyone above has already answered what exactly it is. II is a browser based game which, well, harkens back to the old days of Legend of Red Dragon. Fun little thing.

And really, what pony wouldn't jump at the chance to get eaten by virtual lions?

Ah, Improbable Island. One of the first real text-based games I ever encountered, only to be sucked in by Fallen London and never looking back. I would honestly recommend it, provided you're a fan of some more...abnormal humor. It's free, so there's that bonus too.
