Review #88 - She should know better, Simply Rarity · 4:36am Apr 14th, 2017

Well, it's time for me to review two more stories... but not without first promoting Trixie Lulamoon of the Dreamguard. This story is great, and amazing, and wonderful, and I will soon run out of synonyms, so you should go read it.

Simply Rarity by Somber

She should know better by tailsopony
(Comedy, Random, Slice of Life)
Luna takes a morning stroll, and then realizes that she should really have known better.

Review
Well, this one is deserving of the slice of life tag. For comedy, while it is present, is more of the crack a smile type than laughing. Luna in this one is thoughtful, lost in this new-fangled world, and terribly immature. You know, if it helps, compare her to a 2,000-year-old teenager. Anyway, these make her character amazing. There really isn't a better way to describe it. And so, I go into Spike's character, which is to tack on a small laugh to go with your smile at the end, though I believe the speaking line should have been cut out. Part of what makes me sad about this one is that it was written because of the cover art. This, while there are exceptions, does not produce really great stories. However, it did do a much better job than The Dangers of Deluxe Double-Dog Dares (which I'll get around to reviewing someday). I'm not really sure what else to talk about, so I shall conclude with the weakness.

And that greatest weakness is that the cover art completely gives away the entire plot of the story, leaving only small jokes left. Oh, and the description tells nothing about the story. Now, you may be wondering how this is a weakness. Well you see, it's because there was nothing to see in the fic, the cover art tells all. There was no reason to read the story, there was just no point to it. So, while I did find it humorous, I was thoroughly disappointed by the fic.

Recommendation: Intermediate. (I want to give this a higher rating, I really, truly do, but you could just look at the cover art and know what it is. Yes, there are some good parts, but it was just disappointing when looking on a higher level).

Simply Rarity by Somber
(Sad, Slice of Life, Tragedy)
Twilight Sparkle's birthday has come around, and Rainbow Dash is unimpressed with Rarity's present. When Applejack pokes a bit of fun with her friend, Rarity becomes unusually upset. Twilight Sparkle investigates her friend's feeling, learning something she never expected about her friend and why she is truly suited to be the element of Generosity.

Review
This one I found thanks to the help of a friend, named thelovelydoughnut, who said she cried big time while listening to Dr Wolf's reading. I trusted her enough to read it, and I gotta say, it was alright. It's a sad tragedy fic that, frankly, could have hit harder. Rainbow is too oblivious for me to appreciate, Applejack gets concerned, but not enough to check up on her friend, Fluttershy does nothing, and Pinkie is only there to say why they're in the room together. Twilight, is, well, there to introduce the journal, which makes up most of this word count. And Rarity overreacts in such a way to be unbelievable. Now, the sad part of this one is in the journal entries, which details Rarity's foalhood. However, what punch this does have comes from the signature of each entry and how it relates to what happens. I was quite disappointed by how unengaging this story was while I was reading it. First, the style is such that makes you want to skim it. And second, I was not living the story, nor watching it unfold, I was reading about it. It told me what happened instead of letting me see it happen.

And so we get to the greatest weakness. This time, I'm going with how out of character every single {insert optional word of choice} pony is. Such as Rainbow Dash, not only is she oblivious, but she's a {more words of choice} huge jerk! She should have seen how much Rarity was hurt by her comments, yet she kept on going! Applejack at least noticed Rarity's discomfort, but even that was much later than it should have been. And, really Twilight? Does bookhorse really not know what a journal is? And the uses for such things? I'm gonna end it here before I rip it to shreds even more...

Recommendation: Worth Reading for sadfic and Rarity fans only. (Just read the review and you will know why).

Oh believe me, considering who wrote it I believe we are all fully aware of Trixie of the dreamguard.

I actually hadnt heard of these two reviewed stories though, good thing you pointed me to them or I would have missed them! The Luna one sounds like a lot of fun!

Well, there will always be at least one who hasn't heard of Hoopy...

Thanks for reviewing my story! It really is a simple bit, and I'm sorry it disappointed you.

For me, the fun in writing it was imagining a scenario where the picture could happen. So the story wasn't about Luna licking a pole but about why and how Luna licks a pole, and about the aftermath of licking a pole. That was really the entirety of what I was trying to write, and why I felt like using the picture really wasn't a spoiler. Honestly, it was my first non-M story on this site, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

It's strange seeing this particular story get so much attention when I've been writing on this site for over 4 years now. I've even written stories after it that have many more views, but all the social stuff (reviews/readings/P.M.s) have to do with this story. I'm 90% sure it's because of the art and the T rating. My writing style/quality is roughly as terrible as it's always been. It's also weird, because as you pointed out, it is a really simple story with not much going on.

Anyways, thank you for reviewing the story! I love reviews/feedback.

Simply Rarity was the first fic I read (er.. heard, I guess) my friend showed me it while we were video chatting and I loved it but yes I did bawl while listening to it :twilightsheepish: but it was worth it!!! :pinkiehappy:

First story link goes to the chapter of the story, not the story page.
