Review #55 - Goodnight Moon, Sounds of Lunacy · 2:03am Feb 15th, 2017

EDIT: Evidently it is Hearts and Hooves Day. Don't go thinking I forgot.

Alright then, I am going to say up front that Sounds of Lunacy actually has a sequel which I didn't know about until a few minutes ago, therefore, I must read said sequel and the review of it will be out soon-ish. But enough about that, here are today's two:

(Warning: only read the spoiler text if you want the story spoiled.)

Goodnight Moon by Mocha Star
Sounds of Lunacy by The Engineer Pony

Goodnight Moon by Mocha Star
(Sad, Slice of Life)
A Wonderbolts show takes a turn for the worse and a filly gets hurt.

Review
Rainbow Dash is at a show and takes a filly up into the sky for some reason. And somehow, Rainbow Dash drops said filly. I'll leave you to read the ending should you so choose.

This story is sad, and it does a good job at making one sad, but it is the type of sad that is heart-wrenching, not so much tear-jerking. Rainbow Dash in this one confuses me, I cannot tell why she even picked up the filly, nor can I see her dropping the filly, even if accidentally. Rainbow also does not seem to feel much remorse for what she did. And though the filly is the main character in this one, I cannot help but care more about Rainbow's character. All of this just leaves me with questions, one of them being: is there even a moral? I just cannot seem to find one.

Anyway, this one's weakness is actually Rainbow's character. Followed by the lack of a moral, and then by the theme song at the end. In fact, that song seems to be the major like/ dislike and cry/ not cry factor. I'm going to give my recommendation below, but if this is the kind of thing you want to read, then go for it.

Recommendation: Intermediate.

Personal Thoughts: Personally, the song at the end annoyed me. And I would recommend not adding in songs to any stories... and that goes for everypony.

Sounds of Lunacy by The Engineer Pony
(Comedy, Random, Slice of Life)
Before she became Nightmare Moon, Luna fought many adversaries who threatened Equestria. And since her return, new and old enemies have appeared with alarming frequency. But the land had peace for a thousand years while Luna was on the moon, and now the princess questions how such a thing could be possible. Celestia offers her a completely logical and reasonable explanation.

Review
Luna asks Celestia why they still have a royal guard, and Celestia responds by saying she didn't want them to get bored after a few centuries of peace. Luna then asks how there was peace. Celestia, reluctantly, tells her is is because Luna's mane makes a humming sound, and the eviler you are, the louder it is. And I refuse to spoil anything else.

This one is only really comedic the first time you read it, which is really disappointing if you liked it the first time. Celestia in this one is such a troll, and that is all really. Luna, however, seems pretty accurate to the show Luna to me. I'm not sure what this one is about, actually. All I got from it was some Trollestia laughs the first time I read it; perhaps that is why it is only good the first time... because there is nothing to remember.

This one's weakness was just mentioned above: that there is no point, therefore nothing really to remember. Again, I'm gonna give my recommendation below, but if you want to read it then go right ahead.

Recommendation: Worth Reading if you need a laugh.

Personal Thoughts: So... which format do you like more: the one I have been using for reviews #1-53, or this one? Oh, and the sequel is HERE.

I appreciate the review, but do you have to spoil the whole story in the review to anyone that hasn't read it yet?

I tried not to :twilightoops:. I'll see if there's anything I can do about that...

These are great reviews, in my book. You're mixing talk of each story's strengths and weaknesses with your personal reactions and some analysis, giving your readers good information — for instance, if I'm looking for a deeper and more serious story to read, I might skip the second one even though you say it's worth reading, because I know that what's enjoyable about it won't scratch the serious-story itch.

Thank you for giving the new format a try! I'll put in a vote to keep it, or at least to keep it as a base to tinker with as you settle into a structure you're comfortable with.

It will probably eventually mutate a bit, but I plan on keeping it for now :pinkiehappy:.
