BronyCon day 1 end: Pizza is Magic · 7:09am Jul 9th, 2016

So, I'd love to share my day's experiences, but I'm not sure if I have it in me to do it right now. Or, more accurately, I'm not sure if I want to stay up until 5 am writing a blog post - today was VERY active and VERY busy (and fun! I met so many people!).

But just wanted to share one final thing that happened at the end of the day.

After attending Trick Question's room party (thanks for hosting it!), Bad Horse and I headed back over to the convention center to one final panel. It was a bit of a bust (it was more people showing off their videos than talking about how to make them), but we ended up having an interesting conversation about automation in animation and the lack of progress in that department in some ways (as well as the disconnect between the video game and movie-making communities).

After he returned to his hotel room, I went back to my hotel. But we had only two room keys, and Soge needed one as well. So I waited down in the lobby for him to come in.

There was a nicely dressed group of individuals who had two full pizza pies. They were from a wedding party and had just come back to the hotel, where they found a pizza delivery man who was unable to deliver his pizzas to the room who had ordered them because the people weren't answering their phones. So he offered to sell them to the people for $22.

After I asked to set up my laptop on the far end of the long conference table in the lobby, they invited me over to have a slice of pizza, which was nice of them. As I was dressed rather nicely (white polo shirt, nice khaki pants, black top hat) they probably thought I was a random young professional.

But then they noticed my badge...

And naturally, were curious about it. They wanted to know about the show, about bronies, about the porn (yes, they wanted to know if we were a BUNCH OF WEIRDOS), but what they really wanted to know was why. Why ponies? Why not Dora the Explorer or something else?

So I explained the background of the fandom, Lauren Faust and her crusade for non-sucky girls shows, the central message of friendship being magic, my various hypotheses for people's attraction to the show...

So we made friends over some pizza. It was fun talking to them, and I shook a bunch of hands. They then left me with the rest of their pizza and soda as thanks.

A bit later, some facilities managers from Amazon walked in, and one playfully asked if she could have some pizza. I told her sure, and after some initial skepticism from her that I was really offering her pizza (and that she wasn't imposing by taking some), several Amazon facilities managers ended up clustering around and eating the rest of the pizza (for which I was grateful - I had about half a pizza left, maybe more, and there was no way I was eating all of that).

And so, of course, they, too, wanted to know about the bronies.

So I met two new groups of people, and chatted with them, and had a lot of fun talking about bronies, and ponies, and what I did and why people loved ponies and the variety of the pony fandom. All because of a couple of misdelivered pizzas and people being friendly.

It was fun talking to them, as many of them hadn't known each other before, either (especially amongst the Amazon facilities managers), but they were all friends with each other because of their own shared experiences.

And it was a blast.

Just goes to show that a bit of friendliness (and free pizza) goes a long ways towards forging bonds between people and increasing their understanding for each other.

Everyone lives in their own little worlds, but we can all branch out and learn more about each other.

It was fun.

Thanks for the hat, Bad Horse. I'm not sure if I could have pulled it off without it.

It fits just right.

Friendship is Magic!

That's a wonderful story. Glad for you that you skipped out on cheesecake if that was the alternative. I wasn't there when you explained why you didn't want to come -- only told you disappeared. See you again soon!
