Sometimes I worry about the Internet · 3:27am Jun 8th, 2016

I type in "are unicorns". Google's autocomplete suggestions:

Are unicorns real
Are unicorns evil
Are unicorns mentioned in the bible
Are unicorns real or not
Are unicorns extinct

I worry about people sometimes.

I was gonna make a snarky comment about how our culture intentionally perpetuates the existence of certain mythological figures for cynical ends, and then go on a prolonged rant about Santa Claus.

But then I typed in the third one out of curiosity and got sidetracked reading articles about how many times unicorns are mentioned in the Bible and whether they are an intentional symbolic construct or a typo/translation error.

I agree, evil unicorns are a serious concern. :trixieshiftleft:

How can anyone wonder if they're real? There's a lot of them in Equestria!

Unicorns in the Bible are actually wild oxen, however, the kind mentioned in the Bible are now extinct. The King James translation wasn't meant to signify what we today call unicorns. I'm unsure how that translation even came to be.

I imagine many people reading the Bible may get quite confused about that.

Hey! Hey!

The question of the inherent evil of unicorns is an important one.

Hey, type "black people" into Google sometime.

Donald Trump is dead
Donald Trump is a liberal
Donald Trump is awesome
Donald Trump is the best
Donald Trump is a hero

I prefer your findings on unicorns. At least with those, there's room for hope.

Are unicorns mentioned in the bible

Ah yes, the Book of Beagle.

Well, at least one of those gave me hope. :trollestia:

Google thinks we should either fulfill companionship roles or entertainment.

Try the other racial combinations if you are desperately bored.

I don't imagine Google's engineers originally expected autocomplete to be a fascinating look into the collective consciousness of the internet, but oh boy

Google Autocomplete is fascinating.

And horrifying.

And fascinating.

My earth pony propaganda is working! :pinkiecrazy:

The internet is revealing things about humanity that I think humans wanted to remain hidden.

In the interest of fairness, I tried this for pegasi. Got as far as "are pegas" before the auto-complete suggested the following:

are pegasus real
are pegasus evil
are pegasus and unicorns real
are pegasus real yahoo answers

The last one leads to such gems as "Do Pegasus really alive today?" and a proposal to create a pegasus by mixing horse and eagle stem cells.

That last one managed to amaze me more than Google's refusal to accept the word "pegasi."

This leap shows up for the first time in the Septuagint. At this point I'm not sure a definite scholarly explanation can be arrived at, but what we do know is that the scholars translating original Hebrew texts into Greek for Alexandria were denied Hebrew sculptural history (since there were no extant examples) and were correlating Hebrew text to art of other cultures (such as that of the Assyrians). Notably, side views of the Re'em in Assyrian bas-relief tend to depict the beasts with one horn (simply because they were symmetrical when viewed side-on). Given an unknown animal that was described as wild and fierce and swift and "distinguished by the armor of its brow" and probably cross-referencing this with the Assyrian art at their disposal, they went with the Greek "Monoceros" which KJV subsequently translated as "unicorn" (literally correct).

Did you know Donald Trump is in the WWE Hall of Fame? He's in there with the likes of Arnold Swartzenegger, Snoop Dogg, Mr. T, and Mike Tyson. Personally, I would prefer if they inducted more wrestlers into it than celebrities, but hey, I guess that's why they used to call it World Wrestling Entertainment. Yes, one of your presidential candidates is in a hall of fame originally intended for professional wrestlers. I... I... pfffttt ha ha ha! XD

Well, at least one of those gave me hope. :trollestia:

I'm gonna assume it's Trump is dead. Hey, cuz he's in the WWE Hall of Fame maybe he botched taking chokeslam or maybe even a clothesline. But the other thing about Trump being actually a liberal could lead to some hilarious real people fanfic. Like, the extreme views are all a stupendous troll scheme of Trump's to undermine the Republican Party for the next couple of decades. I guess in that way he is like a martyred double agent.

Ha... yeah, your next president is in the WWE fucking Hall of Fame. Watching this unfold from Canada, I feel sorry for you guys, but laugh anyways, cuz seriously. WWE Hall of Fame :rainbowlaugh:

Also he has a colouring book in his name. I don't think many people can say that at all.

"Are unicorns evil". Is Donald Trump a unicorn? I kinda want to search derpibooru and see if they ponified Trump, but do I really want to...

Are unicorns cute? :raritywink:

That... makes a hecka ton of sense actually. Well done with the research there, dude!

Thanks! Still mysterious is the actual animal the idea of the unicorn itself came from, since the idea was clearly already firmly in place by the time the Seventy got to it. The evolution of a mythic animal in the public narrative is in many ways as fascinating as the evolution of an actual animal; the landscape of the mind replaces natural habitat, and the predators are our concepts of what does or does not make a good story.

What's even worse is that when I looked it up Unicorns killed my girl friend came up as the second most searched topic.

You know, the equations for evolution don't explicitly require a "real" environment. There's probably some interesting science to be done on how mythical creatures propagate through cultures, and adapt both descriptive and symbolic traits.

Of course, we'd need to collect a lot of raw data from people's heads.
Would you like to emigrate to Equestria so that we can satisfy curiosity about friendship and ponies?

Memes were something that Dawkins came up with I think back in the 1970s to think about this sort of thing, though the study of mythological propagation between cultures is older than that.

4016758 Yes, and they're both fascinating things. Beyond being a setup for the Optimalverse as a questionable data collection method, I was just idly considering the merit of trying to math some myths.

"Visit Equestria... For science!" sounds just about perfect.
