Poll Time! · 3:19am Apr 27th, 2016

With Your Human and You wrapping up, a sequel being planned, old stories to update, and several new stories slowly entering the works, I thought I'd ask you all a question pertaining to your preference of chapter sizes vs wait time. If you'd all be so kind as to fill out the poll linked below, that'd be greatly appreciated.

Short: 1500 - 3000 words.
Medium: 3000 - 8000 words.
Long: 8000+ words.

The next chapter is still coming along slowly, although it looks like it's going to be roughly 10,000+ words, so that's something to look forward to. I'll post another blog the minute I'm out of school. I plan on sitting down and spending the whole first weekend of summer finishing the chapter, so there's something else to look forward to.

In terms of word count what do you consider short, medium and long?

I voted not because you need the feedback, but because I am exercising my right as an AMERICAN by voting! :flutterrage:

but also because you need the feedback

This is tricky. What is your perception of a short, medium, or long chapter? Word count wise

I am exercising my right as an AMERICAN by voting!

That right literally means nothing in this presidential election since Clinton has been pretty much "buying" those votes. Trump just appeals to the uneducated and the people who just want to see the world burn. Jesus, I went a little political again.

Considering I didn't really like what's been happening in the story as of late, I guess the quicker the rip, the less pain you'll feel.

I feel like it should be less words, "Just to get this bullshit over with".

3899510 Medium is the best then.

3899526 Or you could, you know, stop reading it.

3899522 I was trying to make a joke, not segue into political banter. :ajbemused:

There's plenty wrong with the American political system, don't get me wrong, but this isn't really the place to be discussing it.

3899573 Side effect of being a member of the Humans are Superior Group.

3899522 I'm exercising my right not to vote so I can complain when everything goes to shit again!

3899593 You do what you do.

Medium, because honestly? I have so little time nowadays I wont even breathe in the direction of a chapter thats more than just a few of K's

Long chapters cause people to forget most of the stuff that's going on.

Anyway, never thought this story would be sequel wise.

Honestly my preference for chapter length depends on the story itself, the chapter, and how much time I have. I believe the absolute best chapter length is between 5000-8000 words. A chapter should be cohesive with other chapters and used for self-contained plot threads, not simply a way to split up large walls of text. In other words I want to be able to think about an event that happened and say "oh, right, that event happened in chapter X, right before Y happened in chapter Z."

Yet sometimes, in some stories on here (including yours at parts), the writing just goes on and on and I just want to finish the chapter. I think the worst story I read that does this is a story called The Lost Element which sometimes has chapter lengths over 50,000 words per chapter and almost never goes below 10,000 per chapter.

Personally, I'm going with 5k-8k. Longer is nice, but it tends to come with wait times in excess of three months or so. On the whole, most stories, no matter how long the chapters are, tend to update on a monthly basis or so, so in that sense longer is better, of course.

If it was actually in proportion to chapter length, though, then middle-ish always seems best. Fast, short updates tend to actually get bogged down in how short they are. Due to not being long enough to really fit much plot progression and characterization into one chapter, they eventually become disjointed. The ultra-long ones tend to be a bit of a chore to read, while also having a tendency to meander off into random digressions that frankly just take up space and add nothing.

So yeah, that's that.

If the short chapters don't get disjointed I'd prefer more frequent updates usually, when theres a good read waiting is a pain sometimes.

its almost over?
