Yep, I just figured out how to reconcile what happened in today's episode with the ongoing Silver Saga. Damage: 0.
So, in the story, it's hinted that smashing the heart would destroy the seal, which would free the Umbrum, but it was also hinted that just breaking it while it was juiced up and activated could harm the captive umbrum.
So back to today's episode. They broke the crystal.
No Umbrum.
Of course there are no umbrum... they left to join the lunar ponies.
Make sense? Does it jive with you?
Well, technically not diverged, the lack of concern for THAT aspect of the heart's shattering could easily be explained BY our stories. The princesses don't worry about Sombra or the Umbrum BECAUSE Silver, Penny and co already helped handle that situation.

3828737 They were awful, but also desperate and fighting for their life. They were shown a more peaceful way to cohabitate with the ponies and moved in near the lunar ponies/bat ponies.
Or maybe it wasn't technically broken by being physically smashed, just knocked out of place so it stopped controlling the weather. They said 'it was still in the castle' when it was inactive before and holding back the weather, but that contradicts the episode they're referring to where Cadance had to hold back the weather with her own magic.

Yeah, it makes sense. By the time the Crystal got shattered the Umbrum were already gone.
3828847 Seems more like she was holding back the clouds Sombra was controlling, rather than the general weather of the area. Or it had a reduced effect considering how much more range it has when it's properly placed.

Because of Sombra. Sombra is a being of shadows. Does it not make sense that his shadow form would block out the sun? His form is, after all, cloud-like.
3829983 His shadow form wasn't covering the entire sky. I don't think it was even visible the first time the spell flickered.
3829308 This is good then, in agreement with your sentiment & Damaged's earlier comment as the crystal ponies & Umbrum 'sprites' share symbiotic connection to the crystal, because the crystal ponies didn't seem to suffer any ill effects I'd assume the same for the Umbrum. So this would be a win/win all round then with a strengthening of the crystal. Also interesting revelation 'first Alicorn by birth' meaning that Tia & Lu weren't born as Alicorns?

Well, it could also be Sombra's Magic influencing the weather. Honestly, anything comes into play. Sombra was trying very hard to break Cadance's barrier, who knows what spells he used?
