Drake's Reviews #5 · 9:38pm Nov 30th, 2015
Been a while since we've done one of these, huh? I can't help it, I have to let a backlog of oneshots build. Longer fics scare me off, the longer the scarier. Anyway, review time.
The Mane Makes the Mare by Dubs Rewatcher.
Judging from the amount of views and likes, I'm really late to the party reading this one, and I doubt my review will make anyone who hasn't read it take notice. But, eh.
Overall, decently funny, some laugh-out-loud moments and a satisfying ending. I didn't care much for the meta-joke about Skyla, but everything else was spot-on.
Recommendation: Good for some quick laughs.
Maud and Rainbow Play Rock-Paper-Scissors by Dubs Rewatcher.
Suitably absurd, with a lot of build-up and tension around a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The joke, of course, is that we readers know what Maud is gonna play because duh, but Rainbow doesn't and Maud's confidence psyches her out and makes her misplay. Who knew RPS could be such a psychologically stressing game?
Recommendation: This story rocks.
Sunset Shimmer Becomes a Raging Frozen Fangirl by VitalSpark
I make you this promise before I click - if this story says "My Past is Not Today" is like "Let It Go," I will rage, downvote, and give a bad review. Yes I'm petty.
Fortunately, we don't have to deal with that. In fact... we don't have to deal with anything, really. The story is built around a punchline that's looking for a joke to go with. Sunset Shimmer watches Frozen, loves it, has a sleepover where she forces folks to dress up like the characters... and that's it. The story ends just when it seemed like it was going to start.
There's no jokes about comparing Elsa to Sunset, no commentary about the obsessive fanbase Frozen has or even the obsessive MLP fanbase. We get only one joke about shipping, no references to Let It Go, and groaning fourth wall joke from Pinkie. This story seems like it wanted to exist to do those sorts of things, but didn't know how. The joke is so weak, you could literally replace Frozen with any other famous movie, and you'd only have to change a couple lines of dialogue to make the story still work.
Recommendation: A clickbait title and an amusing set-up do not a good story make.
Turducken by MythrilMoth
A couple months ago, I had the misfortune via TV Tropes to discover what "Chatoyance" is. If you don't know who that is - you don't want to. I've had the good fortune in my time in this fandom to never actually read "Cupcakes" or "Rainbow Factory," and I could have done good with not reading the few paragraphs of Chatoyance's work that I did, either. As a cure for the horrors I beheld that my eyes now hate my brain for subjecting them to it, Mythril offered this story to me... yeah, I'm good at procrastinating.
Once again this story is delightfully absurd, with some hilarious twists that make no sense so you'll never see them coming, but its okay because they're funny. And it ends the only way it can.
By the way, try actually saying "Quobblck." It's kinda like choking on the word as it comes out.
Recommendation: If absurd humor is your thing, definitely give it a look.
CUTIE MARK CRUSADER NECROMANCERS, YAY! by Justice3442
With a title like that, this is either gonna be really good or really bad... it's really. really good.
The dark comedy and absurdity come in equal measure. Almost every other line is a joke that hits the mark. My only complaint is that I never got into the Button Mash stuff, so his parts were wasted on me, but otherwise this is brilliance. We have sex jokes, ritual sacrifice, demon summonings, and a zombie apocalypse. What more could you ask for?
Also I totally believe Twilight has a copy of the Necronomicon.
Recommendation: If you have the stomach for dark comedy, this is a must-read.
Oh, hey. I follow you, and yet I never saw this. Thanks for the reviews, mate! Glad you enjoyed.
Also you've never read Cupcakes? How can you even call yourself a pony fan?
3592078 Because I like good and nice things. I know enough of Cupcakes to know it is neither.
