    Update (Without excuses this time!)

Guess what? I'm done writing the next chapter of Manifesto.

I just need to give my prereaders a day or two to look over it, and then it'll go up.

Until then, here's Despacito being played on a guzheng.

    Hey, everyone.

I've somehow gotten out of the habit of posting updates. Oops.

Anyway, you've no doubt noticed that I don't post as often as I once did in the past. This is largely because improvements in my life situation mean I have the wherewithal to engage in hobbies other than writing fanfiction.

    Update.

Goodness, it's been a while, hasn't it? You're probably wondering why my pace has slowed down on Manifesto. Well, there are several reasons, but the most relevant one is that I find myself rewriting large swaths of this chapter as I zero in on the best plan for Sunset to take. I'm basically going back and forth between two ideas that can't really be combined into a single one, and for

    New Story Incoming

In case you missed my last blog post, I'm taking a break from the adventures of Celestia and Daring Do to write the next Petriculture story. At this point it looks like it'll be fairly short -- about two chapters long -- and I recently finished up the first chapter, which will be posted once my prereaders give it a final once-over.

Hey, everyone. As many of you know, I'm currently writing an EQG story. As many of you also know, I'm in my thirties, and thus haven't been in high school for about 15 years or so. Thus, I'm finding it difficult to remember what some of the standard practices are.

Long story short, I can't remember how (or even if) new students were introduced in high school, so I'm hoping some of my readers whose memories haven't faded can fill me in.

Some schools do, some don't. It generally depends on the size of the school from what I know. My graduating class had 700 students, so we didn't get indroduced to the classes on our first day.

My little brother, on the other hand had a class of about 50, and every new student was introduced.

well, as one having only been out for 2 years, my memories of he-
*ahem*
my memories of that glorious experience called "high school" is that it varies from school to school
in some, you get announced to the whole school in a (usually) lunch centered event*
in some, just your grade gets introduced*
in others, each class that you're in does a brief introduction, elementary school style*
and lastly, my personal favorite, some simply give you your schedule, pat you on the back, and say "Good luck, you'll need it"**

so take some freedom with that

*each of these goes in order of school size, from small to extra large
** this actually happened, it was hilarious

As an Honest To Goodness High School Student, I'm pretty sure that when there are new people they just kinda show up. If my school announces when new people show up, then no new people have ever shown up, because it's never happened that I know of.

An individual teacher might introduce a new student to the class if they show up in the middle of the year, but beyond that it's unlikely the school would do anything special.

It has been a while, but I don't recall new students ever being introduced at my school and I think that may include some foreign exchange students. You just got your schedule and were thrown to the wolves. That said, I generally tried to distance myself from the general student body so it is entirely possible some of them were introduced and I didn't care enough to notice or remember.

My recollection of HS was that the new kid simply showed up in class and if you wanted to know them, you had to talk to them. maybe the teacher would ask who they were and where they were from but that's about it. Granted, I graduated with 157 other students and I knew all but about three at the very least by reputation and was passing acquaintances with a good majority of them.

Uh... They don't anymore, really. Pretty much new students just show up, maybe some minor talk as to who they are but for the most part they're treated like any other student

It depends entirely on the teacher of the class. How or even if they introduce the new student is up to them. Just make something up, and chances are it will be perfectly accurate for *someone* out there.

You don't get introduced to new students so much as you bump into them. I didn't know there was a new girl until about a week after she arrived.

I don't know about high school, but in middle school you would shadow somebody, follow 'em around all their classes, y'know, though I think that was just for visitors.

I am in high school now. Normally no one mentions it, including the teacher. Some teachers may choose to introduce the new student, but for the most part there's no fanfare. (The amount of support you get depends on how good your Guidance department is. They run the gamut. I have stories.)

3283514 I got that because I was friends with the Guidance people and I had an IEP. My friend set up a shadowing program for entering freshmen as her Gold Award project.

In large schools, teachers might introduce new students, it depends on both the teacher and the class. Math class has a very strict and packed schedule that means teacher have to spend 99% of the time teaching instead of ever playing any games or asking the class how their Christmas class was, but Arts classes are very relaxed in that regard and the teacher has plenty of time to do whatever they want, including introducing students. Also, if the teacher is the type to really try to form a connection with students instead of trying to get through the material, it's more likely the new student will be introduced. I can't say anything about small schools though. This is all in the middle of the semester too, nothing at all will happen if it's the beginning, since it's possible few of the students even know each other well if it's the beginning of the semester.

I ... don't think I ever had a new student halfway thru the year.

I've seen new students coming into a school in the middle of the year, and I've been a student that changed schools before.

When a student comes in during the school year, it warrants introduction because kids get confused when a person pops in out of nowhere. Teachers don't make too big of a deal out of it. A few sentences at the beginning of class, and meet with the student privately after class or after school to figure how the student fits in with the curriculum and policies etc. The student may get a few other students to help them the first few days so they don't get completely lost. Since I went to a larger school, there's no big announcement, but most of the kids find out about the new student on their own. Unless they're from a country or something, they blend in fairly quickly.

If the student is coming in between school years, there's usually less attention because that student is in the same position as the entire freshman class. But all students new to a school district usually get a special orientation, and spend a significant time with the school councilors who want to ensure that the student adjusts to the new environment quickly.

I think the proper procedure for transferring to a new school is to wake up late because you couldn't fall asleep, rush to get there on time, at which point you bump into a girl who is also running late. She will declare that you are an idiot and should watch where you're going. From then on it will be a wacky series of coincidences in which it appears you have done something perverted but actually haven't. You will be punched, repeatedly. The harder she punches you, the more she likes you.

Oh... wait... that's... I gotta stop watching anime.

Let me try to remember. I think we'd just gather around the watering trough when we arrived at school, and meet each other while the horses drank. I seem to recall the new student would have to fetch the firewood for the stove.
