Okay, well, I think it might help more if I just give my personal thoughts on the story:
The biggest flaw for what the story is, it seems to me, is the framing device at the beginning that just seems kind of tacked on. Other than that, though, I think it's (mostly; it's of course not _entirely_ devoid of flaws) a good story. There are certainly some bits that seem ridiculous, yes, but they fit with what the story is to me. It's actually a bit odd, as usually I prefer stories more towards the, hm, I don't really have the vocabulary for this, but more towards the realistic than the... melodramatic? Not quite the word I want, but hopefully it will do. It's a story that subordinates the setting to the characters and plot, which works for me less often than it doesn't but here does. The words "space opera" have come frequently to my mind when contemplating what this story is (though I don't think it technically is space opera, based on what I've read). Or perhaps a pulp story? I'm not looking to this for explorations of deep questions, long discussions on the geometry of space, etc. But it's quite a fun read for me even though it seems a bit odd that the Republic has such technology, for instance; I can just turn down the volume on the party of my brain analyzing everything (though I don't have to try to turn it off, as the story does have a good bit of internal logic) or the like) and say "Wow, that's a grand vista" and the like.
Anyway... It's your choice, in the end, but please don't stop and delete the story. You've written over twenty-two thousand words of it so far, you still have over eight hundred upvotes, and there are still people enjoying it, whatever some others might be saying.
I hope you decide to continue, for I at least find your writing as well as the world you have built to be quite good and intriquing. I really am looking forward to seeing what happens next, and would certainly recommend your writing to my friends... (and have at least once.)
I haven't been reading for a while (~20 chapter backlog) but I intend to get back to it at some point. Please finish the story.

Is this a perfect story? I'd say no, because it doesn't exist. However I have enjoyed reading it, and sure there are some bumps but all things are to be learned from. Finish the story, take what you've learned from it and continue writing, it's the only way to get better
While I'm not sure what problems people are having as I'm a chapter or 2 behind, but I've enjoyed every thing I've read so far. And while it's your choice as to what you do I think if you stop you'll regret it in the long run.

3048406 I haven't read the last five chapters yet, but from what I have read the story is really good. I do wonder when the beginning, when they activated the what if spell, will become relevant. I just can't wait for the real mane six to react to what they saw. Given the length of the what if senario they are seeing, I really expect it to change all of their lives, and maybe change Equestria itself, given Twilight knows just what kind of tech is possible.
Anyways, It's one of the better written stories out there, so I would be very disappointed if you ended the story before we get to see the end, and in the process the real mane six's reactions. Hell, an entirely new story could be written on the reactions of the mane six alone.
Whatever you decide to do, do what feels right to you.
3048515 I agree with the statement that the 'what if' scenario doesn't really add to the story at this point, but it will add a lot of potential after the story completes. It will cause a heck of a reaction out of the mane six, so I am excited for the end of the story when the real mane six reacts to the 'story'.
I just hope it isn't a small few thousand word reaction, and then the mane six just shrug it off. I feel that seeing that what happened in the 'what if scenario' is possible would change the lives of every pony who saw it, especially Twilight because of all the tech she nows knows is possible. So much potential... So much potential for a sequel about Twilight's new obsession with the 'scenario', and all great, and horrible, tech just waiting to be made.
Now I'm just rambling... Hehe.

You have put so much time and effort into the story and I would hate to see it go to waist. Don't get me wrong there are problem with your story but you are a good writer. I wish I was good too but I am mediocre at best but some day I hope to be good. I liked the conversations that your story helped spawned and the debates that you helped start.
By the way I am just wondering how it is going to end and if so motivated I could see sequels and spinoffs too.

I tend to down‐vote a lot of stories, even ones I enjoy because I can and do look past my own biases to rate things objectively. This is one of those stories. Yes, I am one of the sixty‐odd down‐voters, and I don’t think you should quit. I won’t blow smoke up your arse — there is no way in hell I would recommend The Thousand Year Change in good conscience to anybody as, objectively speaking, it is shit. That said it’s not complete shit; its technical execution is literally the worst thing about it, but there is a genuinely good story under that turd if you could simply get someone competent to give it the sand blasting and polishing it needs.
Dude, don't give up on this story. Maybe some people hate it, but it's a great story. I've seen stories that are way worse than this one, and their authors never gave up on them. I believe in you.

Oh, right, I didn't mean that that bit at the beginning specifically would be a setup; it seems to me that, if that's the case, most of the setup would be in the framing device bit at the end, but the bit at the beginning would be part of the overall thing and necessary for the bit at the end.

I for one think this is one of the best fanfics I have ever read, and I would hate not to know what happens. Please, do not cancel or delete this story.
Please keep writing! I honestly can tell how it feels to be second guessing yourself about doing something, especially if it's something you like doing. And even then, there is an overwhelming amount of support for you in your fans, and honestly, I think most of us don't mind if you take breaks from writing every now and then to clear your head. It's your story, you should write it how you feel comfortable with it. And if you feel like you should stop, fine. It's Your decision. If you think you need to stop writing this story, sure we're gonna be sad that it won't get down, but we should be able to understand and accept your decision.
My 2 cents. Most of the time I forget that a spell created this universe. It actually could stand alone on just that. I am curious how the prime mane 6 wi8ll show up or with we just go back to them at the end.
The characters that have cannon counterparts are acting in character there's nothing inherently wrong with the story itself. To glaring plot holes persa. Only two things I think we should see is the general populace of Equestria not be gun ho about war. Also i know you want Cadance to do something with the bat ponies but considering the distant from Canterlot and Everfree she should see the smoke and check that out first. Those are minor things and won't kill the story if not done. I put your fic on par with Lunar Rebellion so don't give up. If you need to bounce ideas just PM me.
To the readers here. If IF the author gives up on the story i will take up the cause and recreate it. Hopefully I won't have to. Even my most critizing mood on a story I never want it deleted or canceled. I always go for a rewrite of some degree. One of my own stories i did a rewrite to and it's doing better this time around.
1000 year change has 833 up votes to 60 down votes. That's great. Lunar Rebellion has 655 up and 25 down. heck looking at many of the stories i keep in library or tracking yours is in the upper tier in terms of up and down. Very few beat your votes layout. While a debate on the final chapter has happened then at MOST maybe consider rewriting THAT chapter. Personally I don't think it needs it but the choice is yours.

I can't really answer whether this would be "worth" finishing - the emotional reaction you would have to finishing and the one you'd have to stopping are things that no one else can really know.
What I can tell you is that I enjoy this story very much, even the bits that are perhaps a little on the campy side - for Celestia's sake, the source material gets over the top too! I would much prefer the universe in which you finish the story to the one in which you do not, but not if that universe comes at the cost of your happiness.
