Fanfiction Reading Update #166 · 9:56am Mar 13th, 2015

I'm starting to get worried that 10,000 words is too long for a weird clopfic—and this thing's not even half finished yet. I also think it's about time I get cracking on some of the oneshots that have been rotting over the last two years. Maybe once I get my feet wet again, I can get working on that one story again.

After the Fall updates yet again with the very faint hope spot that Twilight isn't a complete vegetable—gonna make her inevitable death more tragic. Probability of [Grimdark] ending: 100%.

Corruption of the Sun boosts several chapters which focus on Twilight joining Celestia's march into grimdark with everyone's favorite evil!Twilight shtick—necromancy! To add to the fun, the body count now is getting into canon characters. Only a matter of time before the Mane 6 get involved. Probability of [Grimdark] ending: 80%

I burn through The Lunar Rebellion's remaining chapters as the civil war's intensity is cranked up with character deaths, plot twists, and everyone's favorite: dark magic used to resurrect NMM. The main character supposedly dying loses quite a bit of its impact when 1) the story's in first person and 2) it has already been established she lives earlier in the story. Although, I will give props for killing off the character set to become the main villain—very seldom do I still refuse to accept a death, even when a body is plainly presented and the death confirmed.

I get around to reading Twilight's Harem's newest chapter, with Fluttershy finally joining the clop action. Sadly, it appears the Wonderbolts may be out of the running.

Withdrawal updates with a shift of scenery and slight cool down from the climax of the previous chapter.

Memoirs in Ink and Blood updates with Trixie providing the required grimdark hope spot right before Discord reminds me why this has a 100% chance of grimdark ending.

Possible Trackings is our port of call.

The Lunar Diaries is cut after a single chapter due to a crippling combination of OOCness and incredible haste. It literally goes from Twilight discovering Celestia's evil secret to civil war in 2500 words. Sadly, it's a reminder of the bad Tyrantlestia fanfics of old, right down to the “Twilight turns against Celestia and joins Luna” plot. I like my Tyrantlestia to be much more subtle and slow paced—like Blackacre.

It's Not Mine loses me after two chapters. While it has a nice premise, that premise seems to be hastily moved through in favor of the shipping. It really needed to kick back, and embrace the “Dash is driven insane” comedy instead of rushing for the Twidash cuddling.

Wingless harkens back to the olden days where men were men, children were FBI agents, and “Rainbow Dash breaks a wing” was one of the most common fanfic genres out there. It may not be the best written fanfic ever, but the nostalgia for that seemingly dead genre is just too great to pass up.

The USS Oneshots is now boarding.

Princess Twilight's Profoundly Peripheral Protector provides for ponies precisely placing puffy plots to purposefully purge persistent pains from perusing people's pony parables.

To Serve and Protect thankfully saves me from having to serve more alliteration and instead tosses some light adventure into the mix first established by the preceding story.

Princess Twilight's Protector and the Prankster Pests, placed parallel to previous pony parables, punctuates its placement by predicating its premise on princess and progeny pranks. Its payoff may perturb people precisely due to perceptions of precipitated prose.

I continue to vainly sidestep the elephant in the room and instead read The Incredibly Thrilling Investigation of Storm Kicker which carries similar themes to To Serve and Protect in that it leans far more on the adventure side than the slice of life one. Weirdly, it seems to hug its fanficverse continuity much more tightly than the other oneshots.

Initiation tries to break the winningverse spell with a hearty dose of bat and bat related fanon. Flash Sentry's there as well, but he actually doesn't cause any veins in my forehead to pop out like usual.

The Importance of Proper Diplomacy When Engaging Rival Governments for the Purposes of an Official Treaty intermixes some unique, non-Klingon Griffon Empire, griffon worldbuilding with past war crimes.

Once in a Purple Moon reminds me why I love panicky Twilight and why I'm sad the “Twilight becomes an alicorn” genre had to die due to canon.

And that's all I read for the day.

# of story updates remaining: 415.
# of “Read Later” stories remaining: 1,000.
