    Well, color me impressed.

All 78 episodes on 2 discs, the translation is just as solid as the Hulu version, the subtitles are on by default, and they even translated the mid-episode character cards.

Well, because there was no TYT this week...

Here's an absolutely adorable tutorial on how to hug your pony from doubleWbrothers.

So I've been busy away from ponies... Again...

With my quest/race to get a Rainbow S on all of Freedom Planet 2's stages, my creativity lit up like a bonfire again, and I started crafting an alternate ending of sorts for the past week.

That story is now complete, and posted in its entirety over on AO3.

What to do with Rarity? · 2:13am Jun 19th, 2014

It's a simple question, Reparation readers.

Make your answer as simple or as complicated as you want.

Ideally, what would you do with Rarity? Does she stay? Go? What does she do in either case?

Let me have it. I'm all ears.

Comments ( 41 )

Two endings. One good, one bad. Everybody gets what they want.

...aren't you supposed to decide these sorts of things before you start writing a story?
I mean, like... the basic plot points? Those are important. :rainbowwild:

People these days and their "audience driven stories". Back in my day, you had to write a story yourself! You couldn't just pass the hardest part off to the readers and call it a feature! Rabble rabble! Get off my lawn!
Also, it was uphill to the feature box both ways, in the snow.

I'd say that the best thing to do in Rarity's case is to keep her at arm's length until she can prove to Dash and the others that she no longer wishes to harm them and can be trusted. Killing her now would make her no better than what Rarity was: a violent psycho with a penchant for acting irrationally.

2218172 AND WE LIKED IT

WE LOVED IT

That trust can never be rebuilt (c'mon, think about it) Also as the cause of everything that happened she would never be welcomed back.

However, Rainbow can never be whole without forgiveness, but that cannot come lightly.

I would have Rarity apologize to EVERYPONY, then turn herself in for punishment to the police.

You don't need someone to press charges if you admit to it, also as she was in a coma, the statue of limitations wouldn't really apply.

or at the very least, she needs to leave... never to return.

Otherwise, Rainbow will end up giving into her dark side and do something that can't be undone. hell she may not have to, Applejack might beat her too it.
not to mention Twilight, who would be haunted by having to look at the mare she almost killed (Assuming she doesn't get pissed and finish the job)

In the end, I don't believe any other ending is possible... put yourself in those shoes and ask what you would do/want...

Transformed into bat. Banished to Everfree. :yay:

2218176

that trust was shattered into a million pieces and thrown into the sun.

That's not fixable

2218233 This is where you get into a moral debate, because Rarity is quite obviously remorseful, and because she does feel remorse, it's quite possible that she was acting how she did because of forces outside her control. If she were still who she was in that basement, she wouldn't have jumped to the remorse she felt that quickly.

We don't have enough details at this moment to know if she was herself or not, however, so anything that any of us say or anything a character does can just about be taken with a grain of salt.

2218241
even if she was under someone else's control, Rainbow would still see her doing it. every times she spoke, Rainbow would be reminded of what happened in that basement.

That's a horrible way to live.

Also, they don't live normal lives, eventually something will happen with them that would cause them to put their lives in Rarity's hooves.

Can you really risk it? Even if she was being controlled (which nothing has hinted at) you would never know for sure if her actions were not her own.

Someone may be sorry they raped my daughter, that doesn't mean I can forgive them (even if they were once a friend)

there are lines that cannot be crossed

In your previous stories, or one of the previous ones, Rainbow Dash lamented the fact that with Rarity out of the picture, they'd never get any answers as to why she became the way she did. I think it's time for there to be answers.

2218254

Can you really risk it?

That depends if Rainbow and the others feel as if they're ready to forgive Rarity. If they are, then they can start to rebuild their relationships with each other. If they're not, then they might do something that could lead to Rarity's death, incapacitation, or otherwise punishment.

Has Rarity done something that ranks her above trying to kill everypony with eternal darkness? Gone on any chaos sprees lately? No? Then I think she's not beyond redemption. Hate to say it, but I would think Equestrians would know the bar is set high for crimes you cannot forgive. Betraying people? Dash is gonna get angry about that? I seem to remember her actions while discorded...

2218263

ready to forgive Rarity

Can you forgive someone who did that too you?

Raped you and your friend
took away your life long dream (the wonderbolts)
Drove you to trying to kill yourself
Somehow convinced all your other friends to go along with it.

doesn't pass the smell test to me...

2218262
good idea... but would it matter?

2218273 I might not be.

I'm not Rainbow Dash.

2218271
Nightmare moon paid for that

1000 years on the moon

Rarity hasn't.

2218281 No, nightmare moon was imprisoned because Celestia could not do anything else to stop her. Try again. It wasn't some sentence handed down from on high. Celestia probably thought it would turn her into a statue, after all, it did with Discord.

Also, I would point out at the time of punishment, all Luna had done was attack her sister, she had committed no real crime yet beyond making it dark.

2218262 I agree with you there, on all of that.

2218273

good idea... but would it matter?

I think it would.

2218273

It'd matter if Miles plans on exploring deeper possibilities with the MDW series. Determine if Rarity was the mastermind or not.

2218291
even if it wasn't intentional she suffered for her crime.

also she was stopped before any effect took place

yes she tried to cause eternal darkness but she failed (was stopped)

now if she did cause it and millions of ponies died (and was then forgiven) you would have a point

attempted murder vs murder...

2218295

I thought I read somewhere he was done after this one...

might have misread though. Don't get me wrong, I want to know, but for the characters I don't think her reason would change anything. (not really)

2218299 Yes, and Rarity will have to spend a lifetime making up for shattered friendships. She went nuts. Guess what? These six are ALL prone to bouts of insanity. So no, even this is not unforgivable, and no, she doesn't have to spend a lifetime in jail to make amends. That would be a waste of a lifetime that could be spent DOING things to amend.

2218315 You go crazy once you can do it again, they would all be haunted by what she did. jumping every times she spoke to them, never able to look at her without seeing the mare that ruined their lives. Somethings are unforgivable and this is one of them

her very presence in their lives would cause more pain/confusion/frustration then any amount of penance she did for them could make up for.

even if (somehow) they all did forgive her, the BEST thing she could do is leave.

and again, almost doing something is not the same as doing it.

also what you do matters.
Hey guys I kicked a dragon in the face

not the same as

Hey guys, I skinned that filly alive.

2218328 And again, I bring up Luna, who was cured of insanity, and Discord, who is STILL insane.

2218339
Neither of which actually succeeded at doing anything anywhere near as horrible

And both of which spent 1000 years in a prision of sorts for their crimes

2218346 Yes, but they were again, not there for punishment. They were there because they were too dangerous. Hell, that's an idea. Luna should become Rarity's personal warden. Watching over her mental state. If anyone understands a turn to darkness, it's her. And she would be the strongest proponent to one of her six saviors.

2218366
again, even if it wasn't intentional (elements of harmony are kind of random) they at least paid for it
(rarity hasn't)

not a bad idea though. although it begs the question how she didn't know about it ahead of time...

however, i still can't see them letting her back in
(trusting her)

Rainbow and fluttershy were raped by her
Twilight tried to kill her
Applejack wants to kill her (probably)
pinkie well no one knows what goes on in that head.

the issue at hoof (I think)
if you define Rainbow on her loyalty she has to choose at least one option.
Loyalty to Fluttershy: a victim that was raped
Loyalty to her friends: all who were coerced into helping Rarity
Loyalty to Rarity: who caused it all

in the end, I think she would be Loyal to her true friends
(see Guilda, lightning dust, wonderbolts during 'rainbow falls') her loyalty is not blind, she has ditched friends before for FAR less...

i have a funny feeling Miles is laughing at us now...

my two cents.

I remember a line from Past Sins that said that calling something unforgivable is just an excuse not to move past it and if this story is about anything its trying to move past a tragedy, to salvage what has been lost and show that the power of friendship is strong enough to overcome anything, even something as bad as this. To me, for Dash to forgive her other friends but not Rarity (At least now as she shows remorse and try's to make up for her wrongdoing) would undermine the central thesis of the story. Does that mean they should all forgive her like that? No; easy redemption is both cheap and hollow, but that does not preclude any redemption at all. So yes, Rarity should have to move mountains to prove that her remorse is genuine, Rainbow should struggle with her more than any other of her friends, and things shouldn't just go back to the way things where like nothing happened. After all even if trust can be put back together the cracks will still be there (but that doesn't change the fact that it can still be put back together).

As for the others, while they should be angry at her they should understand that as much as Rarity was the mastermind, the plan could not have gotten off the ground without their involvement (Celestia already explained in a previous story why mental influence was no excuse).

one question no one asked, What would Rarity want?

I get that she is remorseful, but would she even want back into the group? Could she look at them (exp Fluttershy and Rainbow) and not simply see what she did.

I think she wants to pay for what she did, but if (somehow) they ALL forgave her, could she forgive herself? Without paying for it? Would she even want to stay in the same town as the ponies who lives she ruined?

calling something unforgivable is just an excuse not to move past it

(this sounds like a motivational poster)

Sounds good on paper, doesn't work in real life.
examples include but are not limited too
killing my wife
raping my children.
murdering my mom
blowing up a school buss full of children
shooting up elementary schools
Etc...

the debate is if we should add:
you and your lifelong friend being raped and tortured by someone you trusted

honestly? IDK

Don't get me wrong, i like Rarity, (even this crazy Rarity) and I 'want' them to forgive (settle the matter, don't forget but don't let it define them) her. i don't believe they will be able to move on without doing so. However, I believe they could never TRUST her again. without trust, they could never be friends. Rarity should either go to jail, or leave forever. after she apologizes to everyone for what she did.

how you can sell that (make it seem real) IDK

Yes she MIGHT eventually earn back everyone's trust, but that would take YEARS... during that time she'd cause more harm then good by simply being around them. (they would ALWAYS be on guard around her, never 100% sure she wouldn't show up in the middle of the night.)

Honestly if she stayed as Charity, that would have been the best.

Sorry if this caused confusion....

However, Neko said it best in the comments of the story. I'll quote it. (this can still go VERY bad)

Rarity "was" (read: is) a sociopath. A sociopath does not stop being a sociopath. A sociopath with amnesia, is still a sociopath, however they forgot they were. Sociopathy may be one of the few personalty disorders that could be temporarily paved over by amnesia. As long as the amnesiac is not informed or tempted, their sociopathy could be controlled. Once their memories come back, they do not have an epiphany and realize that being a sociopath was wrong. If anything, I would be pissed to find out that I was being deceived about my true nature.
Sociopaths are experts in pretending they have empathy. Rarity being there with them could spell trouble for Twilight and Rainbow Dash. Hopefully they have the wherewithal to tie her up and put a magic dampener on her horn. (I know they have them.)

Some guy, not sure of the name, once said something like "you have been told eye for an eye, tooth foor a tooth, but I say to you, if somepony hits you on your cheek, then turn the other cheek against that pony" sort of.

That one was for the commentators. Now to the question: we want answers. whe want to know why.
The reason RD came back was that the only way they all could heal was together. well, they sort of did. From what I read, this healing process has taken some steps back and they need to do this again. together.
Since the law can't reach her, say that the five of them make their own jury. (this is going to sound silly but. ..) Let them go the whole way, with the costumes and everything for anonymity. And NO THEY SHALL NOT RAPE HER... they should just ask for her reasons, demand explanation s. and if they find it satisfactory or not should be the base of their verdict.

In a way, this goes back to Rainbow. She gave the others a getoutofjailcard and with that she was the one who actually gave it to rarity.

Restore her memory and find out what the hell made her go so crazy.

Should she stay or should she go? That is the question.

I think that they can forgive her. It won't be easy, that's for sure. But I think that the bond that unites them can be reforged with enough time and care.

I want to be suprised by how this turns out, no matter how it goes, so I have no opinion to offer here other then to say, I need this update badly.:pinkiecrazy:

Give her to Spike. :moustache:

Um, well Applejack going to be annoyed, to say the least. I can't see anyone being overly happy soon unless Rarity gets forgiven. I really need to reread the first MDW (which you can't do due to the high likelihood you would kill her off straight away)

Everyone is going to want an explanation. But I can't see anyone killing Rarity.

Let Rainbow forgive her but Rarity has to have have some kind of punishment

I don't know.. This fits the situation though kinda..[youtube=http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JSUBuVdkskA]

Have Rarity figure out what happened to her that made her act the way she did. Trauma, stress, whatever led to her wanting Rainbow as a sex slave.

Also, Rarity probably still loves Fluttershy, and now that she's not going to show it in her sick and twisted way (which Fluttershy probably somewhat enjoyed) I think she should at least talk to Fluttershy and/or Applejack. Give Applejack advice and tips on things that Fluttershy likes, and properly break up with Fluttershy.

Of course, the unlikely course of events that I would like most is Fluttersy recognizing that Rarity is back to 'normal', realizing that she also still loves her, and vouching for her against Applejack to care for her since she's obviously still shaken up by such a sudden reveal of her previous actions. AppleRariShy ahoi. (I think Rarity being a sub to both of them would work really well, putting her fate in both of their hooves.)

be honest i cannot see her just returning to them. far, far too much pain and hurt al around. all she can do is express her remorse, and be on her way and make a new life. even if something is returned of their old love for each other, as the source of this madness she cannot safely stay, not only for their sake but for her own. especially when she had managed to influenced her friends in such a way.......... actually fairly sure magical manipulation would actually make them more ort less innoccent of their crimes. it is like drugging them against theri will.

unless it turns out something else is behind all of this, rarity must go......
also she needs to reunite with sweetie belle. whether or not forgiveness is given, well maybe that is something you should decide.

At this point after being reintroduced.. I feel Rarity practically has to stay for the forseeable future, as I cannot imagine they would want to let her out of their sight again... as for what happened... Whether it was a lingering result of nightmare rarity, a side effect of putting magic and emotion in diamonds and crystals when she works giving her a sombra like desire for slaves, or even sombra tainting her directly through a gem.... It matters less WHY she did what she did, though the why may make it slightly more understandable. (Though if there was someone who deliberately tried to cause the situation to shatter or enslave the elements, and thus tainted Rarity directly, that could be interesting, since they have at least succeeded in disarming In them for now, and they may interfere again to take advantage of the situation or if they fear the elements may reconcile and be able to be used again... but that's a story hook for another time....) The real point of this story seems to focus on the rediscovery of Rarity, and who she is going to become now, and what the rest of the cast will do about it, or how they will shape the situation. And I am eager to see how it works out.

Hmmm...

Idea one: Wipe Rarity's memory (effectively killing the Rarity individual) and seal her in stone for two hundred years or so. When she emerges, no one knows her, no one alive has been directly hurt by her (and Luna and Celestia have had two centuries to get over the shock of the fall of the Elements), and she has a clean slate. Make her agree to accept this punishment beforehand. Now that she's acknowledged her motivations and Rainbow Dash has been able to ask her that one question, Dash might be able to finally move on, particularly if she knows that Rarity is gone for good... and if there's a discreet statue put somewhere that it can get used as a lightning target every now and then.

Idea two: Placed under house arrest in Ponyville, with Royal Guards enforcing it; barring the house catching on fire, she is not allowed to step outside for any reason. Lock the magic limiter in place with an iron bridle, conspicuous enough that she cannot meaningfully hide it. No scissors, needles, fabric, or other stye-related items are allowed in the house; she destroyed Dash's dream, and letting her try to resume her own would be even more cruel to Dash. Let the others take as much time as they need to decide what to do... even if 'what to do' is to leave Rarity locked inside the stripped-out Boutique to rot.

Idea three: Permanent silence spell, then give her to the Diamond Dogs for a lifetime of hard labor. If Dash or the others want to visit, they can go visit the mines.

Idea four: Tie-in with Noctilucent; it turns out the shadow in his mind is a malevolent external entity... and it came to him after Rarity's mind was wiped, freeing it. Luna is able to force it back into Rarity, and Rainbow Dash gets closure in the overtly physical way she really wants, by pounding the crap out of Re-enchanted Rarity. When she's been beaten back into unconsciousness, Luna pulls Dash and the others into Rarity's mind to confront the shadow entity directly, and tear it out of Rarity for good. The cathartic moment is the closure Dash needs.

Idea five: Borrowing from the Noctilucent story, a pegasus' natural inclination is to protect. Therefore, invoke Dash's protective instincts on behalf of Rarity. Luna begins giving Rarity constant nightmares while Rarity is kept under constant guard in Ponyville (and house arrest). Seeing Rarity's descent into a trembling, baggy-eyed, skinny wreck eventually makes Dash's protective instincts kick in; she intervenes in Rarity's nightmares (which Luna makes sure are properly thematic for the two of them) until Luna is convinced that they've been conditioned for their roles: Dash convinced of her strength again, and in protecting even Rarity convinced of her own loyalty to her friends; Rarity accepting that she has been properly punished and absolutely unable to think of Dash in an inferior position ever again.

Idea six: Rarity is transformed into a cow and/or is forced to fight giant crabs. I'm not sure how this helps Rainbow Dash or the others at all, but it seems to be what the Internet wants for her.

Idea seven: Rarity is banished permanently from Equestria and is sent to live among the griffons... with Gilda as her personal warden. A year later, Dash and company go to try again for some kind of closure... and find that Gilda, despite her last angry parting with Rainbow Dash, has still taken Rarity's actions as an assault on a friend, and Rarity is in somewhat bad condition, with claw-scars aplenty, mane and tail cut almost bald, and otherwise abused (but not life-threateningly so). Gilda performs some casual cruelty on Rarity in front of them; Dash intervenes to stop any further punishment and demands they take Rarity back with them (those protective instincts again). The Princesses lift the banishment. Rarity is left with scars, a limp, and a conditioned fear of letting her mane or tail grow more than a few inches. Dash can't hold her anger against Rarity in the face of her new anger against Gilda, and Dash reluctantly accepts that even after such a betrayal as Rarity committed, she just can't keep her anger going anymore.

Idea eight: Tirek attacks. With the Elements unable to function, and no box or keys to unleash the rainbow on him, and Celestia and Luna not trusting Twilight to carry the alicorn magic, Tirek wins. Finding out what happened, he deliberately forces all of them to reprise their horrific crimes on Dash, over and over again until he grows bored and eats them. Then Bob Newhart wakes up.

Idea nine: On Celestia's command, the Wonderbolts draft Rainbow Dash. They're not really going to force her to perform; the purpose is actually to put her through an exaggeratedly-exhausting 'Wonderbolts Boot Camp' so that the physically-oriented Dash will be re-focused on her athletic prowess, with positive reinforcement from existing Wonderbolts she still looks up to. Rarity is kept in Canterlot as a housemaid. They never do reconcile, but forcing Dash out of her fixation on the past helps Dash to recover. Years later, a 'teenaged' Spike visiting the castle sees an elderly white unicorn mare polishing the stained glass image of Captain Rainbow Dash. Spike does not recognize the maid.

Idea ten: Rarity accepts that her monstrous crimes are ultimately unforgivable and petitions the Princesses to let her waive the statute of limitations and face trial. Rainbow Dash sees Rarity being led from the courtroom in chains to spend the rest of her life in the Canterlot dungeons, and Dash finds a bitter acceptance, which is enough to let her move on with her life (with the help of some long-delayed counseling). Dash's marks mix, a rainbow bolt coming from a thundercloud, as she turns back to flight. But now she flies like she's angry at the sky, more aggressive in her stunts, always pushing it more. She joins the Wonderbolts, but after only a few (record-setting) years, her increasing recklessness results in a fatal crash.

One more.

Rarity meets back up with Fluttershy... and it comes out that there's a reason why Rarity acted so abnormally. Because Fluttershy was driving her to it. It wasn't that Rarity went nuts after she and Fluttershy started trying BDSM; Fluttershy kept demanding more (in a passive-aggressively subtle way) and Rarity, generous as she is, kept trying to give Fluttershy what she wanted, not recognizing what it was doing to her. Aided by Fluttershy slipping her a few 'herbal supplements' of various sorts.

Because Fluttershy deserves a chance to be the Secret Evil Mastermind!
