How suck/not-suck is this cover art?

Hey folks. Next story is coming along, despite the kinks Season 5 is throwing in its path (Seriously, Babs Seed got her cutie mark? Off screen? For hairdressing? There's no way I could've planned for that). Chapter 1 is close, and I'll post it once I have Chapter 2 ready for editing so there hopefully won't be too long a break between updates.

Table for a guest, plus call for editors

Have you heard about Kitsune Risu's new project? No? Have you heard of Kitsune Risu? You should. He's one of the most underrated authors on this site. Roughly one third of my library of Criminally Underrated Stories were penned by this guy.

    Bitter Harvest mini-prequel of sorts

Some of you already know, but I have been hosting weekly writing prompts over at Thirty Minute Ponies. Each prompt is always posted with a mini-fic alongside it, sort of as an example, but mostly to keep myself writing alongside the participants.

    Contest results, and an apology

This is embarrassingly and inexcusably late, and still half-assed and incomplete, but...

The It's My Birthday and I'll Ship Ponies If I Want To contest is over! Like, more than a month ago! Timing!

I am really sorry about this. You folks who put effort forward to make something nice deserve better than this.

The Bitter End · 7:27pm Mar 6th, 2014

After four weeks of posting, the final chapter of Bitter Harvest is up at last. I know there's a few of you out there who like to wait until a story is all the way complete before you read it, so this is your cue to go have a look if you like.

I toyed around a little bit with this story in terms of how to time the release of chapters. Previous experience has indicated that simply dumping all the chapters of a story on the first day is a recipe for a low view-count, as a whole 17k-word story looks a lot less friendly than one nice, bite-sized chapter at a time. On the other end of the spectrum, releasing chapters month by month as I write them is a good way to end up never finishing a story. *cough, Z-Clop, cough* While I think I could have done a little bit better with publishing this story, perhaps three chapters a week instead of two, I believe this style of uploading has worked out well, and will probably publish future stories in a similar fashion.

I have been quite giddy with the feedback I have received on this story. It really is a team effort, far more so than you might realize. Not just at the editing stage, though that is a very important part of it, and I really have to thank Midnight Herald and Communist Bob for their help, in addition to a couple people that didn't mention their FimFic handles when they came to the Gdoc to help (I'm pretty sure one of them was Periphery). But all of you folks who read, commented, and/or rated the story are also a huge part of what the story is. As Kitsune Risu said in his review, this is a story about perceptions. And it's not just those of the title character. The best part of this for me was seeing how people came into this story with their own agendas and notions, and how that made it a different story for one person than it was for the next. It delighted me to no end to see terms like Word of God and Death of the Author used in the comments section. The fact that people walked away from this story with their own headcanons about what really went on in it makes me feel like I have done something right as a writer.

This is what I love about fanfiction. We are a community of peers and equals here. We don't just write stories and read stories. We share stories. We get together and create and comment and critique and collaborate, and it all resuscitates a social spirit that was once a vital part of storytelling back in days long past.

So yeah. Long story short, I'm gonna call Bitter Harvest a success. I was very pleased to have you folks with me for it.

In other news, the second Legacy Prompt for Thirty Minute Ponies is up. Bitter Harvest owes its origin to TMP, so if you want, you could go take a look, maybe write something for it. What's thirty minutes out of your day?

As for what's next... well, I dare not say for certain which of the half-dozen story ideas I am courting is currently my favorite, lest I invite Season Four to come smash it with its fiery canonical wrath. However, the most recent story I've been putting words into is about 1500 words in, and already there's screaming and yelling and broken glassware and cut hooves. Must be a Raridash.

A RariDash? Written by you?

Please and thank you. :pinkiehappy:

In other news, when you gonna give us more ApplePie? You've been slacking. :P

1901676 I love Apple Pie to bits, as you know, but I have trouble justifying writing two stories about the same ship. There's just so many lovely, lovely pony pairings out there to write, and it feels like I'm squandering the opportunity to write them if I go back and write a ship I've already done before when I could be writing, say, glorious angsty Raridash.

I ought to try and whip up something for another caption game, though.

Another story in my "I really need to start reading them" pile. Congrats on your sucess :pinkiehappy:

Bitter Harvest was my favorite story for February, Esle

You did good :raritywink:

As someone who has not updated a story in 6 months, your update schedule is pretty consistent.

The story, of course, was really good, and the amount of readers to the amount of likes shows just how much people that actually read it enjoyed it as much as I did.

Next time around when you need any pre/crossreaders, I'll definitely volunteer, because being part of that process seems like it could be very interesting.

1904354 Fantastic! Fancy me one flabbergasted filly, to fathom the fact that my fan fiction should be the finest feature in your February. Why, in a fit of felicity, I may fully freak out!

Forsooth!

1905059 I'll be sure to drop you a line next time I've got something to look over. Thanks!

Curses! Why is there no "Like" button for blog posts? :ajsmug:

I did make a couple of comments in your working document, yeah, but I'm generally better at looking for typos and things than giving the sort of critiques on content that you wanted. Hopefully I was at least a little bit helpful. I just wish pre-reading didn't make it sorta hard to leave normal reaction comments on the final story as it's posted here. Either way, though, it was a fun fic.

Also, I think if I tried to do one of the TMP prompts, it would end up something like, "Fluttershy looked out her window and watched as a bird flew past. 'Now what?' she wondered. 'Umm... I don't know." Sorry, Shy, I don't know either.

1905920 You were quite helpful. I am very grateful for your assistance. And I get where you're coming from; it can be weird commenting on a story when you've already read and given critique on an earlier, very similar version of it. I'm glad you enjoyed it, regardless.

On TMP prompts, though... don't sell yourself short. From what I've seen in your comments, you've a sharp creative mind, and a good handle on what can and can not fit into a story. I'll bet you could come up with something pretty neat. But even if it did come out like your example above, that would be perfectly fine. TMP is meant to be a nice, low-pressure environment where you can practice your writing.

1906042 Well, I can ramble on for too long sometimes when I'm just commenting on things, but when it comes to trying to write stories, I can never seem to put anything into words. I've made attempts at writing pony fics a few times, and the best I ever managed was a few scenes in a collaborative fic that I eventually crapped out on and couldn't contribute anything else.

For my own ideas, I eventually gave up on one and turned it into a comic that felt entirely inadequate, and for the other I wrote out a rough skeleton of the 2nd half of the story, but had no idea how to get it there through the first half. By the time I finally came up with something that worked, the story was moving toward being obsolete, and I just never really had enough motivation to try to finish it. The one or two other ideas that actually seemed like they could make decent stories never went beyond mere concepts.

Actually, what I'm really bad at is dialogue. I can kinda figure out narration eventually, but I can't ever seem to get anywhere when trying to make characters speak, especially if the direction of the story forces me to have to make up a character.

I suppose the biggest thing, though, is a matter of never getting around to it, since I never keep up with anything I want to do, so fumbling around trying to figure out how to make words do stuff always falls to the bottom of the priority list of things that never get done.

Oh, has it already been a year since Z-clop?

Esle, it's been over a year since Z-clop

:(

That Raridash chapter had better be Z-clop :rainbowwild:

1915780 :rainbowderp:

Poor Dash has been banged to the brink of unconsciousness (and past, in one case) three times in the last two chapters. If the next chapter is Raridash, she might not survive!

...Though, granted, that would be one of the better ways to go... :rainbowwild:

I am working on the next chapter of Z-clop. Very slowly, and with many distractions, but working all the same. I put in a few stanzas a few weeks ago, but quite obviously, it's taking quite a while to form up.

very congrats whit teh success of bitter harvest! it was a fun and nice read! =)

now your thinking in a raridash? welp XD, not much into that, but I guess I can give a look to your story, after all, is you! XD haha
and in other idea.....bitterharvest end, just as you said, there gives headcanons XD, thats cool

and I just thoguht in one that I would like to ask you XD (I dont lose anything haha)
do you tihnk there is a posibility that....you make like an alternate ending....where Applejack say yes and becomes the marefriend of Golden harvest? X3
I really really really would love to see how that would work! XD
being neighboors, they will see each other every morning, maybe even help whit their chores, and also, I want to see how you will read Harvest mind after the yes declaration XD, would be pretty funny keeping this as a comedy too X3
and also, the reaction of her mothers! would be priceles XD haha
..what do you think? XD it hasnt need to be too long XD
