Trigger warning: Epilogue shaming · 7:50pm Nov 7th, 2013

Those of you who have been living in an alternate timeline know that, for years, I've been one of the most passionate defenders of Epilogue Culture around. Well, Eakin just recently came out as an epiloguer — shamed by that thoroughly despicable new "Unnecessary Epilogue Syndrome" campaign the wordcount overlords started — and I'm afraid to say that the comments section got ugly after I spoke up in support of his lifestyle choices.

The takeaway here is, Salivanth is a horrible, horrible person. Clearly, you should all be following him so that we can all descend upon him in mad green-voting frenzies whenever he dares to post something "witty" and "awesome" like the recent Clyde's Tales collaboration.

PLEASE NOTE: This blog post is a safe space for writers who want to own their epilogues without shame or negativity. Anyone suggesting wordcount reduction strategies or "just end your stories already" will be savagely mocked, derided, and compared to Sombra.

Edit: Please note the location of my tongue. It is in my cheek.

Unrelated: I'd like a little help with finding cover art for an upcoming story. I figured I'd be able to find some fan art fairly easily of Future Twilight and Celestia posing together looking grim and badass (preferably surrounded by an army of dead changelings or something), but after several hours of searching I am drawing a complete blank. The few pics I've found of Twilight and Celestia looking appropriately action-movie-y have them fighting each other, which doesn't quite work out. I may need to end up commissioning something. :unsuresweetie: Any suggestions before I resort to that, or any suggestions/volunteers for artists?

So, people hate the ideas of epilogues? :rainbowhuh:

I can say that, to me, that state of mind makes no rational sense whatsoever.

My only two posted stories both contain (or will contain) an epilogue.

What, do you think this is a joke? Epilogues are serious business, sir. Not everyone has the choice to write epilogue-free stories.

Clearly you're not from the alternate timeline I mentioned.

1489463 I like epilogues (when done right). They provide me with closure.

Really? What's their problem, that they don't like epilogues? Some stories need them, to provide a wrap-up.

Well, speaking just for myself, the fic that I'm currently actively working on will have an Epilogue at the end when it's done. Mainly because I already have a sequel to it planned. (I really want to make it a series of sorts, with at least two sequels, if not slightly more. But that will largely depend on how the first fic, and its subsequent sequel, go.)

And one or two of my other might have them. I don't know yet. But if they need them, they'll definitely get them.:rainbowdetermined2:

I was thinking of writing an epilogue that would turn into a story, with Doctor Hooves in an event where time is running backwards.

Definitely has potential! There's a Trixie story here somewhere that does just that, digging further backward paragraph by paragraph. In a rather different (and non-pony) vein, my short The Winchester Experiment.

hint: this actually is a joke

But yes, epilogues are, in fact, cool. Perfectly cool. And I take great umbrage at any epilogue-shamer who says otherwise.

1489848 Ah, I see.

Yeah, they are, and so do I. So when I finally post the one to my fic, they better not come around trying to shame me about it, because they'll hear more from me in five minutes than they'll want to hear in the next fifty years of their lives!:twilightangry2:

(That last would probably work better in person, but y'all get my drift, I hope.:raritywink:)

My god is clearly dead. I'm an atheist now, and it's all thanks to you.

1489883

Don't worry, I don't go to random people's stories and shame them. If people want to dilute their stories and make them terrible by buying into the pro-epilogue culture like sheeple in the privacy of their own stories, that is entirely their choice.

1489461

Clearly, you are a man/woman of impeccable taste and eloquence. If I'm ever in your area, I shall buy you a beer.

You are still a butt and your face is also still a butt.

Since the infamous reveal of the Feature Box Barrier, and the consequent retooling, I have been considering epiloguing Pinkie Plural (2976 words). However, that storyline wouldn't (couldn't) match the tone or form of the original, and now I've realized the epilogue is better played as a sequel / side-story.

Technically, if you believe in a dead god, isn't that necrotheism?

(Also, ew. I think that's illegal in 49 states plus two counties in Alabama.)

Indeed it is. Fortunately, Australia's laws don't prohibit necrotheism. Rumor has it that they did once, but a dingo ran off with the relevant page of the Constitution.
