    Fragments From The Archives

Hey folks! It’s been a while. I hope everyone’s doing well over here.

I was going through some old files, and I found a bunch of unfinished stories I was working on, way back when. I’ve posted three of them in my scrapfile for whoever's interested.

New Holiday Story: Where The Heart Is

I've posted a new story about going home for the holidays. You won't see it in your feed, because the mods in their infinite wisdom have decreed that sufficiently short stories aren't actually stories, so this blog is to let you know that it's available in my

Help Me, And Win A Free Commission

Thanks to Chris, I've been thinking about writing style recently. What is a style? Do I have one? Do I have more than one? How can I tell? “Thinking really hard about these questions” doesn't seem like a good way to get answers, since my most common problem as a writer is that I don't communicate the ideas I mean to communicate.

Regarding Hasbro's Latest Announcement · 3:10pm May 13th, 2013

This is going to be a disaster. I don't know what Hasbro is thinking. I guess this is what happens when you let the marketing people call the shots. They're trying to cash in on the fad, and they don't care about keeping their brand strong or maintaining loyalty in the fans who got them to this point.

Let's take this one step at a time. To start, we have Shining Armor. I mean, since when does Twilight even have a brother? You can't just pull something like that out of thin air! Do they really expect us to believe that Twilight cares about this guy when we've never even heard of him before? There's no way they can pull that off.

And then there's this new princess coming out of nowhere. Sorry, what? There are supposed to be two princesses! All the lore stops making sense if you add a third! Speaking as a fanfic author, it's important that we have a coherent world with interesting features to explore. This Cadance character is going to take that away. She's boring and twee and none of us will be able to do anything interesting with her.

That's not the worst part, though. The worst part is that they think they can get away with an overused, girly trope like a friggin' wedding. This show was popular because it went deeper than this candy-scented heart-encrusted pablum. And before you give me anything about marketing to the target demographic, let me say that young girls can tell the difference, too. They want a cool story with a cool conflict. What conflict are we going to have? Twilight worrying that her dress doesn't match her mane? At least give us some kind of villain!

I guess I can see why Hasbro's marketing thought this would work, but they were wrong. If they want to keep the fandom, they need to tell good stories and they need to create an interesting world. I've seen more than enough to tell that Canterlot Wedding will fail on both counts.

Also Canterlot Wedding totally sucked. :|

I don't see the issue. I'm not gonna go see it in theatres, to be certain, but it looks passable enough.

Okay, it sucked in the best way possible but it still sucked and it was all Cadence's fault.

Well play, it's smart to bring this up when everybody loved the episode after making a big rant about it.

Perhaps you should mention that, with most us being the classic transformers fans and probably have seen this, how great the transformers animated was with all the new cast of characters that we never seen before in the show, how most of the all old existing characters are killed off, how the plot is similar to star wars, how the said plot doesn't make sense, and Twilight Optimus Prime got killed off so that Hot Rod become the new Alicorn Princess I mean the new prime.
Perhaps explain that the ultimate perhaps of the movie is remove the old line of merchandise and introduce new and exciting toys that every kid will want to buy? Imagine the surprise that everyone is defending the movie, despite it's flaws

Spike is a dog. Not an equal, a pet. Pay more attention to the complainers. You're missing the mark on them. It's not about the girliness, it's about the complete sellout of principles. That was never part of the problem with A Canterlot Wedding.

A Canterlot Wedding had something else going for it. They managed to advertise deceptively. As 1075516 points out, the advertising and the actual show were very different. That could theoretically happen here as well, and it'd be to its benefit, but it doesn't seem likely. It would also still be messed up that they made Spike into a pet.

I'm probably the one person who hasn't had a problem with dog-Spike. Why? Because it's being played for laughs, and isn't some below-the-belt statement of Spike's worth.

Didn't you notice in the trailer that Spike entered the mirror with Twilight, meaning he is actually the same character? It's true; checkout the scene where Twilight get sucks into the vortex and at the very end you see that Spike is there too. Just as the movie will play around with Twilight's new human form for comedic purposes, it will do the same with Spike. There's no character degradation here anymore than when Twilight accidentally turned her parents into plants.

The movie could end up royally bombing, but now that we know the folks behind it are most if not all the same people behind FiM, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and withhold judgement until it is released.

Hang on, I'm confused. Are you making fun of the fact that people were all uppity about the wedding episode and wound up liking it, and saying the same thing is happening here, or am I totally missing something?

It's also still a problem that Shining Armor appeared out of friggin' nowhere and that Cadence shattered the lore into ten thousand pieces. Pretty much everything past season 1 has serious, serious problems, and I love it anyway. Likewise, I expect Equestria Girls to have problems, and to be good in spite of them.

1075903
Exactly right.

1075930

The fanfics that have spawned out of Cadence's loreshattering are pretty good, and Shining Armor seems to have been an unmitigated benefit to the writers.

I'm not sure if I'm actually disagreeing with you, though I'm still antihyped for Equestria Girls.

Oh, we don't disagree. I'm rather fond of Cadie and Shine, myself. Analogously, if the dog thing makes fanfic writers pay more attention to the way the show's characters treat Spike as an afterthought, I would be pretty happy.

This? This is the mark of a quality nemesis. Try to get away with Denis Leary and they counter with Jonathan Swift.

Oh, well done, sir. Well done indeed.

Though I do still have issues with the wedding.

*golf claps*

Something I've observed over the years is that constraints (often severe constraints) can be a huge spur to creativity. The DHX team has shown time and again that they can turn dictatorial orders from Hasbro into enjoyable episodes. The odds are on their side.

You are right. Equestria Girls might turn out just like A Canterlot Wedding.
