Maybe it's nothing, but every time the medicine is brought up I get an inkling Wild might be in the changelings' clutches and these past few chapters have been part of an extended mindfuck-in-the-making. It's because every time he takes a dose of the medicine, we're reminded that it makes his mind feel fuzzy. Now there's a filly with telepathy? Am I crazy for thinking that's a changeling outside his pod communicating with him while he's jacked into the matrix, so to speak?
Complicated times overall.
Great chapter!

That's an interesting idea, but no, he's not in some pod somewhere. He is indeed recovering in the hospital wing.
Ok, maybe it's just me, but this felt like a tell rather than a show, because I still really don't trust Luna here. At all.
With the drugs involved, especially with the 'no half doses' thing, and whatever amount Wild is projecting, the situation still feels wildly uncomfortable to me...
So if that's what you're going for great job lol.
Awesome chapter, looking forward to more! :)

He's not quite in his mind, but Luna is also showing him care pretty much no one else ever did. Generally speaking, Wild also doesn't know how to have healthy relationships. He has very low expectations of pretty much everyone, so he would cling to those he deems trustworthy in one way or another.
Luna does have good intentions and genuinely wants to help him, so at least he's not falling for some predatory trap of a creep. Unfortunately, she is both from a different society and a vastly different time in the said society, so there's some disconnect to be had. Generally, she can be trusted with the well-being of young ponies, but Wild is a very special case where literally no one in pony society or elsewhere in that entire world is properly qualified to deal with.
Wild still needs to learn how to be in any sort of relationship with anyone, how to set and respect boundaries, and how to treat other people like people. I think I've written enough about how little experience he has when it comes to social stuff, and learning it is more difficult for him because of mental health issues as well as the fact that he's neurodivergent and doesn't think like most people do in the first place.
I could write all day long about how Wild is in serious need of competent help... which is what I do when I write this story.
But sometimes I want to do nothing more than to talk on and on about exactly what I am writing and what it all means... which I did in this very comment. Can't really help myself there

Okay. Thought he was being red-pilled, to continue the matrix analogy (I know that's not exact).
See, now this is making me wonder if Artful is a Changeling in disguise.
And the part about Art being trans makes me wonder if he was a Queen candidate who didn't feel like he was a Queen but male.
So thanks to Changling magic fuckery Artful transition magicked from a Queen candidate to either a male drone or King(?) drone.
Lemme know if I'm off the mark or somewhat right!

That's an interesting theory. I can say that he's just giving changelings the benefit of the doubt - for one reason or another - but isn't a changeling himself. Exactly why he defends changelings right after the worst Changeling-Pony interaction in recent memory will be revealed in the future.

I love hearing the analysis, and I can easily rant for hours about stuff I've written (none on this site yet, maybe someday). It shows passion so all good lol.
I absolutely agree with the good depiction of Wild's socialisation being very deeply broken, and it's been very well shown.
I also can see that Luna is trying, and I trust she wouldn't do anything upsetting, but I can't say I trust HER. This is heavily influenced by my take on, just about everything, I know. However, the potions' free will surpressing effects, Wild bypassing his internal monologue of 'try and gain some bearing of yourself' and her still being a ruler of a country, hell, even just someone running a home for kids, she's automatically engaging at a bigger picture... Which Wild himself can be viewed as a hazard to.
Do I trust she means well? Yes. Do i trust she doesn't intend to take advantage of anyone? Yes.
Do I, the reader, who sympathises with Wild in some aspects, trust Luna to respect his free will, and not take actions either 'for his own good' or 'for the greater good'? Absolutely not. That's why I don't trust her in a very "no go away you're inserting yourself constantly and it's very uncomfortable, wild RUN" sort of way.
As I said, we're digging into my personal takes, experiences and in some ways, biases, but the awesome thing about sites like fimfic are I can say this directly and you might see it and either dismiss it as ramblings or glean something useful haha.
Looking forward to more explorations of these characters!

I very much appreciate reading your thoughts. They certainly give me a perspective I don't really think of that often.
I have a certain fondness for Princess Luna as a character, so I tend to treat her favorably in my stories and overlook problems. Like what you described, the fact that she's essentially holding all the power over the foals under her care, and she's also one of the country's absolute rulers with both political and magical power behind her. Were she a worse person - and she does have the capacity for it, considering she was Nightmare Moon for a time - it could have easily be turned into a totalitarian hell that would make North Korea seem like a far better scenario.
Both fortunately and unfortunately, monarchy - or diarchy, in this case - persisted in Equestria in unchanging ways for over a thousand years. Celestia is genuinely a good person, trying her best, and so is Luna. So, on one hand, it is going well, ponies are happy, Equestria as a whole is generally prosperous, etc. However, any absolutist ideology is inherently dangerous and unfair, and only work for the benefit of all with the "right people" in power. Those "right people" can die, those people can change for the worse, and nothing is truly guaranteed. Celestia and Luna are hard to kill and their bodies will never age past what is comparable to around 30-40 in humans, so still in prime. So, Equestria is lucky with their diarchy because it works, all thanks to Celestia and Luna being genuinely good people. However, no one and nothing is infallible, and there is a very real danger of Equestria collapsing if something goes even moderately wrong.
Say, if Nightmare Moon didn't just attack Celestia but raised an army. Civil wars are usually bloody and brutal and extremely devastating for everyone involved. That Equestria hasn't suffered one is very much a blessing and a very, very lucky thing.
Celestia and Luna both hold a tremendous amount of power, partially not even truly aware of the scale of it because they've not really known anything else, certainly not for a long while. Because you realize it, you feel uneasy about Luna in this story, and I can certainly understand. As I said before, I like Luna, so there's some authorial bias in her favor, but I do have to recognize that she's not a chosen leader and that she does wield more power than anyone should ever have.
If Wild is bothered by being nude, I think it would do him some good to potentially invest in getting a cloak. It would cover his rear, and as someone who owns one in real life, cloaks just look really cool and are generally really fun to wear. Also, I imagine Canterlot being up a mountain means it doesn't get overly hot in the summer to make wearing one uncomfortable, and gets cold enough in the winter for it to be genuinely useful to have.
More plz

I post a new chapter every Monday, so don't worry, the story is regularly updated.
damn ethics committee! how else am i supposed to get home grown brains for the sole purpose of automation via attachment to mundane everyday utilities?
Dang...
But I like his accent though....
I see what you did there, Artful.
