It had been a few hours after Tirek had told Sunset that 'she served him'. He hadn't said anything else to him since then, which gave her time to think. That's all she could do anyways. It's all she would do for the rest of her life. How could she 'serve' Tirek, if she was stuck in Tartarus for the rest of her life. The only way that could happen is....That's only if..Tirek had a plan to get out.
Sunset head snapped up from her resting position. That was it! Tirek had a plan to escape, and that was Sunset's only way out. But how—there was no escape from Tartarus. Sunset had studied it for years, the only way out, was for someone to be on the outside to open the doors.
But that someone couldn't be anypony, they needed power, and the Tartarus Key, which was held under Princess Celestia's protection. Somepony of equal power would have to face her, but who? Who did Tirek have on the outside?
Sunset stood up on her four haunches shakily, and with growing confidence, she looked towards the direction of Tirek's cell.
"Tirek!" She called out. Sunset waited, but received nothing in return. Louder this time, Sunset tried again. "Tirek! I know you hear me! I have something to ask you!"
Seconds passed by before she received an answer. "What is it?" Tirek asked sharply.
Sunset's ears perked up, "What is your plan!" she demanded.
A deep and dark chuckle filled the air. "You are a very clever pony, Sunset Shimmer." There was a pause. "But why should I trust you with my plan, if there was one?"
Sunset paused, why should Tirek trust her with such a thing. He had been there for years upon years, and she was only there for a couple of days and was suffering. If this was Tirek's only chance to get out of Tartarus, then she herself wouldn't trust anyone with a plan of that importance. But if there was a way out of Tartarus, Sunset needed to know.
"What do I need to do to prove to you that I can be trusted?" Sunset asked firmly.
There was silence.
Then, after a few moments, Tirek spoke up. "Why were you thrown in here?" he asked slowly.
Sunset didn't answer right away. "I-," she began, her voice refusing to speak. "I tried to take over Equestria, and almost killed a princess in the process."
Tirek burst into a manic laugh, "If Equestria can almost fall into the hands of a unicorn, there will be no stopping us!". An awkward silence filled the air. "Now tell me Sunset Shimmer, you don't seem like that type of pony who would give up so easily, now would you?"
"No, not normally." She muttered loud enough for him to hear.
"How would you like to get revenge on those who wronged you?" Sunset could feel the sinister smile that formed on Tirek's lips. "You are obviously a powerful pony, I can feel your aura from where I stand, join me, and together, we could rule Equestria!"
Sunset blinked. She wanted to say 'yes' right away but something stopped her. What if the plan Tirek had failed, she definitely wouldn't be sent to Tartarus again. No, she would be more than likely be sent to her death.
On the other hand, she would most likely die here anyway.
Sunset Shimmer was a smart pony, she knew what option was the better choice. She knew that one of them was wrong, but the need for revenge yearned for her to join Tirek and whoever he had on the outside. This would be her chance to prove herself to everyone that had wronged her.
And of course, if there was a chance like that.....Sunset was going to take it.
Somewhere far away from the kingdom of Equestria, in the deepest forests of the Everfree, the Lord of Chaos, a small Pegasus Pony and Queen of the Changelings sat around a fire. Their eyes glowing in the dark, their sinister gaze burning brighter than the campfire flame.
"I am telling you Chrysie! I've got the trust of that purple pony princess in the bag!"
Although they were far from any ponies, Tartarus itself was closer to the group than anything else.
Chrysalis groaned. "Why do we even need him?" she asked, glaring at Discord. "I was this close to having Equestria...But with the Lord of Chaos on our side, it will be a breeze."
Discord only chuckled, summoning tea with his magic. "The plan is simple Chrysie, dear. You disguise yourself as Luna, and I, a simple guard—"
"Yes, yes, we've gone over this a countless amount of times." Chrysalis rolled her eyes. "But what do we gain from having Tirek on our side?"
"My my, someone doesn't appear to be a great team player." Discord laughed.
Cozy Glow stood up from her seat on a makeshift bench. "We still talk to each other you know, from the way he puts it, he sounds very powerful." She said, looking at Chrysalis. "Why not get his help, and have this whole thing in the bag!"
Discord smiled. "Exactly!" He scooted closer to Chrysalis. "Imagine getting your hands on all of that alicorn magic!"
Chrysalis did literally seem to imagine the power that could be at her hooves—with Tirek's help of course, and a sinister smile started to form on her lips.
She nodded her head, "We attack Tartarus tomorrow, and if we are going to win this fight, we attack the outer cities first, and move in quickly." Chrysalis declared, the others listening closely to her plan. "Soon, all of Equestria will be ours."
The small pegasus giggled as she joined Chrysalis on her bench. The Lord of Chaos floated next to her, smiling. "Look at you go saying things like, 'ours' now!" His smile widening as Chrysalis gave him an enraged snarl.
She shook her head, ignoring Discord's teasing, and gave a fang filled grin, "Equestria doesn't know what's coming for it."
if celestia properly adopted sunset shimmer, then that equestria nepotism could've worked in her favor.
She still would've been sent to tartarus for story reasons, but Luna wouldn't have came off like a hypocrite.
Fear is powerful
Glad to see this updated again.
Considering how blurred the line between right and wrong is in Equestria, can this actually be that bad? Yes, helping Tirek is a bad thing, but compared to Luna and Discord (who have done far worse), is this decision really that big? Sure, she’s powerful, but it wouldn’t really change anything if she agreed or not. Because even if she didn’t, Tirek could just steal her magic. He’d still be able to use her power regardless of her choice.
Huh, it’s almost like hell isnt good for rehabilitating people.

Crazy right?
I'm actually curious about how Elements react to this. As far as we know they can outright reject their bearers (Celestia vs Luna case) and need to at least approve everypony in group for Rainbow of Doom to be summoned (first attept of Twileght to defeat Discord). As far as i see current situation at least one of Kindness. Honesty and Loyalty will outright stop to work when Twilight is part of the group. So no more Rainbow of Doom.
Considering that Tirek is going to be free soon...

Actually yeah, she still would have. Luna's viewpoint is that she wasn't banished to Tartarus because of her value to Equestria, never mind the fact that Celestia had been doing her job for a millennium, or that facets of both Celestia and Luna's unique magics can be placed as enchantments upon artifacts. Sunset being related to a princess by law wouldn't increase any arbitrary value she had, which let's be clear here, the problem with Sunset's sentencing is that Luna alone was allowed to judge her. None of the other princesses even said anything in court, and no I don't count Twilight's call for arbitration as saying anything. Luna was the only one of the four who knew absolutely nothing about Sunset, and yet she was allowed to make the full judgement call on her worth. What would Luna know of Sunset's worth? So not only is she a hypocrite, but she named herself judge, jury, and executioner of a kangaroo court by effectively shutting down her peers.
The description didn't tell me this would be a Luna bashing, idiot stick princess fic. The author needs to rethink this from the ground up. You can't tell a story if the most central element of that story requires completely shelving any manner of common sense to be on board with. I mean you can tell that story, technically, but any aspiring author who gives half a shit owes it not only to their reader, but to themselves, to try harder than that. Alternate Universe isn't a cure-all for deviations in character. Not on its own at least. Big deviations still won't sit well with readers who know the source material unless there are explored deviations in the world itself and how it differs from the source that explain these big differences in characters, and of course in a story with such a narrow focus for a plot, such a thing wouldn't be in the spirit of the fic itself, so the author has to take extra care in making sure none of their iterations of characters require that supplemental material be written to fill in holes. Still, if this is your angle, then I pose the following: If Luna sees herself as arbitrarily valuable to Equestria, then what is the nature of Nightmare Moon in your story that allowed for her to become a Fallen Alicorn despite having such a stable sense of self-worth? And if Luna became a Fallen Alicorn and was banished for a millennium like in the source material, how does she continue to believe that she has some arbitrary value to Equestria when the country entered a golden age in her absence? While I'm at it, what makes this story an alternate universe? Is it just the changes in a few people's decisions and a different positioning of a few key pieces? If so, that's not an Alternate Universe. That's simply what happens when a different writer with different ideas takes an existing plot thread and spins it their way.

damn someones on their period.
I'll take the advice, but this plays a role in future chapters, and maybe sequels. If you don't like it don't read it. I am the author of this fanfiction, and you are not. Do not tell me how to write my alternate universe and the way I write the characters.
10337421
You don't seem to take criticism very well. Oh well...
So what's this thing you said plays a role in future chapters? It wasn't clear.
10337526
I'll take criticism that is respectful. Not jabs towards my writing and my fic.
And the story is not complete, of course there is going to be more chapters. And I can't go ruin the plot of the story, but Luna's hypocrite behavior plays a role later in the story.
Wow. I'm hooked on the story now, so please keep up with the good work!
10338462
Thanks!
Ah the council of evil is back and badder than ever.
*looks at Discord*
Of course, this could go anywhere with that wild card in the mix. It might be a real bad guy takeover, it might be a day Discord is bored and wants to see if he can arrange a heist-movie style jailbreak for the heck of it.
Can't wait to see where it goes.
Edit: Also, Tirek has been watching too much Empire Strikes Back.
Waiting for the next chapter
Finally the recently updated I applaud you for making Sunset think and also I applaud you for making Sunset know that there's no other fate other than death if she chooses to ally herself with tirek. (If they forgive her or not is up in the air.) However this is where my insight on canon goes against you yet again sorry even if this is a alt. Universe you are still following the template cozy would not be known or contacting tirek yet. Little miss lovebug would not have done the second invasion yet which means SHE STILL HAS HER HIVE. Discord could do something similar to season 4 or 9 where he wasn't given any form of respect other then Fluttershy and he may have allied himself to evil again to teach a lesson like in season 9 however he is still reformed (however loosely that is.).
P.s. Back on cozy case the school was not made yet because the mlp movie did not happen yet which means no storm king invasion/no mane 6 exploring their world being chased by tempest (bless her soul) so no motivation to make a school of friendship to teach other creatures friendship. Even if you change the past and how she became an alicorn she would still need to explore the world to check other species' plight. Also again NO CASTLE which means no map therefore no spread of friendship or missions around equestria for friendship. Also yes they made the journal/diary of friendship at the start of season 3 but starlight is the one that gave them the idea to spread it if you somehow make them have the idea by that to make the school.
P.p.s. More on cozy she started her letters with him when he was imprisoned in season 4 not sure if it is fully true but that is kinda what tirek said about the letters when he was talking to the mane 6 plus spike (don't worry pal I won't forget you.). So sorry I'm not trying to make you cancel your story I'm trying to make your story better and in essence you a better author/writer in return I will continue reading when you next update this story.
Is this story gonna get updated
It’s a amazing story so I’m hoping the answer to my question is ‘yes’
Looks like sunset isn’t going to reform.
10760735
I didn’t mean to say she did. I just meant that she tried.
10105345
Lets not forget Sunset also got hurt during the cleansing process. Luna didn't. AND the guards are being incompentent and treating her roughly despite her wounds. So yeah. Luna the big time jerk
Update?
10861558
That implies Cozy was a Princess when she was an alicorn. Being an alicorn doesn’t automatically make them Princesses.
10861572
She didn't stay an alicorn when the battle was over because she cheated the process. She found a way to make herself an alicorn by having a ton of stolen magic but once the magic was returned to their rightful owners.
10861591
First off, she didn’t become an alicorn by stealing other ponies magic, she got it from 1/3 of the magic in the bell that was in there when they found the bell. You’re thinking of when Tirek stole magic. Second, she’d still be a princess when she broke into the castle. So if being an alicorn is all it took, Cozy wouldn’t have had to blast her way in. The guards would’ve let her in with no problem because at the time, she was an alicorn, so a princess.
10861611
The bell was stealing magic which they then took all except discord magic. Apparently nobody could handle it.
10861620
Yes but they themselves didn’t take it from the ponies, they took it from the bell. Finding something and stealing something are two different things. And due to how long it’s been since the ones who originally had that magic died, the magic doesn’t belong to anyone by the time they absorb the magic. Think of how archaeologists are called archaeologists and not grave robbers. And how museums can keep all the things they can. Enough time has pasts since the owners have died that it’s no longer considered stealing.
10909997
Honestly, I’m curious to know what it was like without luna there. I don’t think raising the moon was her only job and it must’ve took awhile for everypony to adapt.
Really, I wonder if this wouldn't make more sense if Twilight had been killed - or at least severely injured, and therefore unable to have any input until the trial had already concluded.
10299412
Honestly, I’ve questioned the morals and lines of equestria for a long time.
10337346
Actually, I think that’s the reason she made the decision. Because, she knows nothing about sunset she would be less bias. I think this is actually similar to real life court, but I could be wrong.
10431268
Interesting.
10618761
I honestly forgot about that.
Any news for the next chapter?
