A pair of Police officers are involved in a car crash whilst on duty during a supernatural storm. Much to their surprise, they soon realise that they are no longer in their home town or even their own world.
"No. I have never heard of diesel, nor have I seen any reference to it in any of my books."
Just out of curiosity, is any police force in the world considering adopting electric cars? Theoretically, all it takes is two 110 V outlets (or one 220 V outlet) to be able to recharge the car overnight, so perhaps it'd be an easier time.
9667460 Probably not. Our cars are constantly switched over from shift to shift so a car will usually be left at a police station for no longer than an hour. You'd need to buy more cars and have enough place to store them all. They wouldn't have enough time to charge.
The only exception may be for local police teams who work smaller areas and very rarely work nights.
Eh, considering Twiggles they'd at least be able to get some diesel and lubricant oil with magic. Getting that car to run - or at least catapult equestrian automobile technology - would be quite easy, or at least feasible.
9667768 It would be even better if it were an electric car because all he would need are one or two household outlets, depending on what voltage Equestria uses. Sadly, however, electric police cars may be confined to local, suburban police departments, at least until 15-minute chargers become commonplace.
"We don't carry spares. I doubt that this world has car batteries so I think I may be fucked on that end."
Yeah, a spare care battery is a bit of a space-hog.
But I did find this nifty power bank that's the size of a brick, can charge a cell phone or tablet, that has jumper clips attached to be able to provide a jump start to a car battery! It fits great in the seat pocket where I have a couple maps, a pair of gloves, and a flashlight.
Definitely something to consider for your non-police car!
I would sincerely doubt it. All the extra radio communications equipment, computer, lights, and other add-ons to the typical police vehicle require so much power that they generally have a pretty upgraded alternator vs the standard for a given model of car, and even then, they have to leave the engine running on calls if they aren't shutting everything down, or it will drain the battery dry, ah... very rapidly.
The battery that can give a consumer electric vehicle a 200 mile range may not make it a quarter of that as a police vehicle, with all the extra requirements.
That doesn't mean a hybrid couldn't be a good choice for a police vehicle. Probably not something on the level of a Civic or anything; that's a bit underpowered, there.
But you can make an ICE far more fuel efficient if you set it up to run at just a single speed generating electricity instead of varying speeds to feed a mechanical transmission, and just let batteries and power systems deliver that electricity to radios, electric motors, etc as-needed, so it's entirely feasible to do that for a vehicle.
9667449 Just because they have a magical equivalent and it is fairly basic doesn't mean they can't appreciate the ingenuity needed to do it without magic.
This vehicle and their radios are going to give the Equestrians a significant tech boost. Sure, magic can do the same things, but there is still a place for a purely tech equivalent. May end up seeing some higher end magitechnology now as well.
Often the hardest part of a new discovery has been the constant nagging worry that what was attempted wasn't even possible, knowing it is and even a general direction will make new developments occur much faster.
I think Becky may be surprised when she drives into town. While the noise may initially alarm ponies, the self-driving carraige the Flim-Flam brothers used shows that a magic equivalent is at least known, if apparently rare. I fully expect ponies with a more mechanical leaning to be more fascinated than alarmed.
The veil of denial has fallen! She's darn lucky that the fuel tank wasn't ruptured or otherwise damaged... And that the frame is apparently moderately okay. Keep going.! ;)
I am amazed that she thought she was in still on Earth when she was having conversation with talking ponies.
Really? It is practically equal to your magic zap spell. We human have to work around the long way to accomplish what you do with a thought.
I LOVE THIS STORY!
Best £20 commission I ever spent

I'd like to see Twilight stick her head out the window on the way back, like a doggie.

That'd be unbearably cute

So I take it you work in a large metropolitan area or you're something like a state trooper.
Also, no offense, but there are charging stations that charge the car in about 15 minutes, but those may not be very common (for now).
I'm sure they have crude oil, just need to refine it. Granted, that depends if they know how to.

I wonder how the other officers back at Earth are taking two of their mates going missing with no explanation.
This is so freaking interesting, when young I wanted to be a police officer. My parents refused since it's quite a dangerous job where I live.
this story is coming together really good.
I’m going to guess the idea that she might be capable of driving back to Europe is a mixture of hope and disorientation from trauma and sleep.
There's always cooking oil if you're desperate. A bit of magic to keep it liquid in the winter and prevent jamming.
