Was that intentional?
Because I have to admit, I giggled a bit more then I properly should have.
Still, nice seeing payback for past deeds. Do wonder why they used knockout darts, though. A mundane cure found, perhaps?
Now that sounds like it's going to rub some of the ponies the wrong way.
Cool to see Liz and Richard back.
Richard seems like a cool guy, and it'll be nice to have a human scientist available to help figure things out. I'm sure he'd love to take a look at one of the non-infectious ponies to see what's going on with their biology.
interesting developments.
I have to say though, all this hand/hoof rolling is getting really distracting because everyone does it. (I counted 4 in this chapter alone)

That would be quite an interesting twist, if they have a cure. Well, there are two types of cures: One to make them non-infectious, another to reverse the transformation.
I highly doubt the transformation is reversible in any capacity beyond additional magic, and even then probably not permanently. Probably a quality of The Void.
Making them non-infectious though, Windy and some of the other unicorns can do that already. It's possible the military, after the partial success of William, managed to get a few unicorns on their side to do just that. I doubt they just execute all their infected soldiers.
Still, it may be because Crystal's area is filled with uninfected (is everyone in the caverns uninfectious?) That they want to take them alive, for study. No need to kill what may be useful subjects.

Kinda a long-shot, but if magic really exists perhaps some long-hidden wizard cabal has come forth due to necessity?
Still, even without that type of out-of-the-left-field-twist, some type of drug or cure to forcefully restore human level intelligence would have some rather interesting implications. Even if a cure-cure is currently beyond humanity, I mean.
6095841
That's a horrific idea. You remember Lone Wing's reaction to remembering, don't you?
6095861
Well... yeah.
Not all medicine is pleasant. That doesn't mean you should leave people sick when you have a cure.
6095869
Is it a cure? The trauma of remembering, horror at what they've done, and the suppression of the effect that makes ponies happy and content . . . could also suppress their ability to feel happy about anything.
There has to be a more natural way for an intelligence cure.
Every society is a house of cards. It's just a question of what level of disruption is needed to send them toppling. Sometimes it takes a magical mishap in another universe, sometimes it takes an exploitation of the public trust.
Liz doesn't appear to have much appreciation for long-term planning. At least, not when the benefits for her and hers aren't immediately obvious. I just hope she doesn't find a higher bidder...
As for the military... Well, they were using nonlethal ordinance, which is an encouraging sign. Whether the brass will be willing to open sincere diplomatic channels remains to be seen.
6095022 There are so many similarities from that show to this story that it is mind boggling.
The girl, Sandra, said that she thought she was raped, similar to the way some of the characters of the show said something along the lines of the same thing when they got infected.
The way people got infected in this show was also very similar to how people got infected in this story; a very nasty french kiss. That, and the infected act very similarly to the ones in the story. They are still human at first, but their desire to spread the infection overcomes their mind and then they become mindless animals.
Oh, not to mention, there are certain people in the show that are capable of some degree of control over the infected! (Or at least keep the infected from attacking them, I didn't watch the show for long enough to see to what extent they can control them.) The only difference is that they are are still relatively human in appearance, aside for glowy eyes, and lack a second head.
So, either you have watched the show before, or this is a ungodly coincidence.
6095938 You're seeing coincidence where really it's just two writers using tropes. My goal was to make a zombie breakdown with non-violent ponies.
Harts Fire just whispered in my ear do not trust them.
and I tend to follow his feelings.
Harts Fire
Pretty sure that means "Permission to fight"
Uh, excuse me that is not what you say when you are looking for a diplomatic solution.
"engage" in military terms literally means "attack"
You are asking if it is okay to attack a target that you are standing directly in front of.
6693187 Jesus Christ, I thought the same thing.

You're looking at it wrong, more than one meaning to engage...and on the 2nd date too?
