I want to get Team Fortress 2, but it's rated M; however, it's only rated M for cartoon gore. So, should I get a copy?

2467982
Yes.
Team Fortress 2 is simply one of those games that you need to have.
Plus, you can actually disable gibbing..
But beware of the community.

2467982 sure why not, I mean I'm 14 and I play it

2467982 Why would something being rated M be a big deal.

2467989
It's only a big deal to the twelve year olds who can't get their grubby little hands on said titles.
Too bad most parents could care less about game ratings.

I have no idea what you mean by "getting a copy." It's free on Steam, and IIRC it's free on whatever console network it's on too.

I think M is too harsh a rating for the actual game, and I think the cartoon gore isn't particularly bad, so if that's all you're likely to object to, and you really enjoy aimlessly FPS PvPing now and then, sure why not.

Plus, you can actually disable gibbing..

That would be a good way to solve your dilemma if you have a problem with gore.

Yes. I just needed some time off.

2468006
I don't have a problem with gore...my mom does.

2468013

That solves it either way. :derpytongue2:

2467982 There's nothing wrong with wanting to play a good FPS game.

I'm pretty sure that the Bible doesn't say anything that would not encourage playing such games if that's what you're wondering.

2468001
I'm older than twelve, and my parents do care, that's half of the problem.

2468018
There was a little bit of that, and a little bit of wondering if cartoon gore is really the only reason for the M rating; mostly it was just fear of my mom not approving of it and thinking less of me for playing it.

2468024
There is infrequent usage of mild to moderate profanity, and needless to say, pretty much anything can happen in online matches.

2468040
Probably wouldn't be that bad though.

What would be the best package for TF2? Supposedly the Collecter's Edition disc has a lot of stuff.

Light swearing.

You can turn off the gore.

ITS FREE.

GET THE GAME.

2468061
That NSFW picture...was it part of a mod or is it actually part of the game?

2468082
Players can spray any picture onto objects.
But no, it's not part of the game.

2468085
Well, in that case, I'll be careful about who I pick as opponents! :twilightsheepish:

2468091

That picture of the naked chick is a spray that an online player put on the wall.

They have child safe servers. Stay on those and you'll be fine. They don't allow swearing or offensive sprays and will most likely have the gibbing turned off.

It's free. Why would you pay for that? :rainbowhuh:

Tell us your computer specs if you know them. Or go to "Can You RUN It http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/

Scroll through the list and find TF2. See if your computer can run the game.

2467982 I say definitely. I have only heard good things about TF2. I probably would get it myself, except for two things:

1. My mother would kill me if I got an M-rated game (understandable, since family is very protective [in a mostly good way])
2. I'm not a big gamer. I like Pokémon and Smash Bros., but I mostly stick to iPhone games.

2468154
Both of those points match me perfectly! :twilightblush:

2468109
Good point, except that free games come with a bunch of other stuff that while not necessarily harmful, malicious viruses, are still large packages that burden computers and track down the stuff you search. It might be better to either get the CD-ROM or a downloadable pricy package.

That settles it! I'm going to negotiate with my Mom and see what I can arrange.

Um, what? TF2 is free from its publisher.

The publisher's store page.

Good news is, she seems to like the idea of the game itself, actually.

2468050 '''Get yourself a pair of pyro vision goggles. No gore that way!

2467982

It is fine: the gore it has cartoon gib stuff.

If it bothers you, there is a "silly gibs" option I've used that replaces the ugly gibs stuff with a random assortment of junk such as alarm clocks and rubber ducks.

There is also Pyrovision mode, but its an acquired taste.

Also, its a free to play game: you don't need to spend money if you don't want to.

I personally recommend it.

2467982
no one can truly answer that question but the Holy Spirit. Ask Him if it's right for you. If He says yes, go ahead, but if you feel like it's wrong, then it very well may be wrong for you personally.
God has made us each different with different strengths and weaknesses

You can turn off gore.
You can turn off sprays. (can be pornographic or offensive)
You can turn off decals. (can be pornographic or offensive)

That's what everyone says. Now, I'll be the first person to actually tell you how to do so.

The only thing remaining, besides that, is the light swearing in the voice calls. That's unavoidable, but not too extreme. They don't go beyond 'damn' and 'ass', ect.

I've got 2500 hours in TF2. You learn some stuff after that long. I use several customary settings that, I think, make the game run faster and more fun to play. You don't have to use them all, but I'd recommend it.

Launch options set for TF2 (this just makes the game run a lot faster in some areas):
-dxlevel 81 -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd -full -w 1366 -h 768 -console -novid -useforcedmparms

Copy this. Go to your Steam games library, right-click Team Fortress 2, click "Properties", click "Set launch options...", clear any existing options and paste the new ones.

---

Pastebin of my entire autoexec.cfg (custom options that affect gameplay specifications):
http://pastebin.com/4P88z7SC

This particular config: disables gibs (body fragments), disables gore, and disables ragdolls (corpses). After you kill someone, the body fades away within about 0.5 seconds, leaving no trace. I don't believe it permanently disables all sprays or decals, but they fade away after being posted at some early point. Other than that, it's basic Chris' config, which optimizes the game to make it run faster.

If you want it, copy everything from the pastebin, put it in your autoexec folder found here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\cfg
Rightclick the autoexec folder in there, edit it with whatever word processor, and paste in the stuff from the pastebin. Then Ctrl+s to save it.

---

The HUD I use, OMP hud; most competitive players use it too. It's minimalistic, but gives what's needed. Though, you probably may just prefer TF2's default heads-up display; skip this if that's the case.

Screenshots of what it looks like (check these first, just to be sure. You'll probably like it though): http://rawr.am/tf2hud/screenshots.html
Download it here: http://rawr.am/tf2hud/

After you download it and open up the file, drag the folder "tf2hud-master" into your custom folder here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom
Should be fine once it's in there.

You don't have to do any of that, but I figured I'd let you know anyway, in the case that you want the game to run faster/have a different hp and ammo display/or disable any gore/sprays/corpses.

We should play some time, too. xD

2468909 This is the best answer in the entire thread.

2467982 I'd say yes. It's only a game, it's not real life. It shouldn't make you want to go out and kill someone for fun. Just be aware of what you're getting yourself into, and if at any time you don't think you want to play it anymore then don't.

It's probably the shooter that I'm the most relaxed on. Gameplay wise, it has customizable classes, and still is balanced. You could tell one class from another from a mile away, so you can see what's coming. It's customizable, and you don't usually get killed by X or Y and have nothing you could do about it.

It's a great game, and fun whether you're good at it or not. Except I have a mouse terrible for PC gaming and miss two thirds of my shots. Whenever I use my friend's mouse, I rack up headshots with ease.

You should get it. It also doesn't really mirror real life too, so if anybody is worried about it teaching you how to kill a guy, then you obviously would not know.

Indeed. There's nothing taught in that regard, beyond "point the dangerous end at the other person." Which ... well, I'm sure everyone already knows that much. :derpytongue2:

Wait, I don't believe anyone's asked this yet:

Are you getting it for PC, or console?

Because, if console, I can't scream NO loud enough
