My Top Ten Favorite "Equestria Girls" Fanfics · 9:54pm Dec 20th, 2021

Hello, my fellow bronies,

Here are my top ten favorite Equestria Girls fanfics.

10. A Dance On the Mats by Kind of Brony

This was a story I enjoyed so much, I decided to write a TVTropes page for it.

This is a fusion of Equestria Girls and Reverse Gender Role Equestria subgenre, which shows an Equestria where females are the dominant sex. There is an excellent exploration into how gender expectations are in this world, with Rainbow feeling emasculated because a boy can beat her in a fight, and the Rainbooms acting incredulous to the idea of men being good on their feet.

We also have janefilly Anon who is snarky, hilarious, tough, handsome, gentlemanly, and oblivious to the attention he gets from (both) genders, excellent fight scenes, some really silly comedy about girls having magic, and a Caramel who is adorably crushing on Anon.

Overall, a fun read.

9. Sentry Dismissed by FanOfMostEverything

The story as its central them the idea that Flash was aware of Sunset being from another world. Which is an interesting idea in itself.

But I love it because it features my favorite, for a lack of a better word, version of evil Sunset. She's remorseless, self-centered, and cold-hearted...but also weirdly endearing and hilariously naive about the human world. The way she breaks up with Flash will make you pity the poor guy but make you chuckle a bit at ol'Sunny Bun. She's not a character you can admire, but she's definitely fun to read about.

8. Shadowbolts Adventures: The Real Friendship Games by DragonShadow

The story features the Shadowbolts and the Rainbooms competing over the most glorious prize of all: getting to spend time with Sci-Twi.

This is definitely the kind of storyline that would appear in an MLP property. But what warms my heart the most is the once friendless Sci-Twi having two groups of people wanting to spend time with her.

7. Wondercolts Forever by Epilson Delta

The story imagines the EG world as some shiny dystopia that Principal Celestia rules over, offering teenagers a "perfect" life in exchange for them remaining what are effectively docile cattle: they stay in her world and she psychically feeds off of their potential.

It takes a lot of things people hate about teen shows (shallow characters, limited environment, bad world-building, boring plots, the absence of adult authority) and plays them for existential horror. Sunset's emotional conflict is whether she wants to stay in this world or whether she wants to grow up, deal with her problems, and return to Equestria to hash things out with Princess Celestia.

Overall, a saddening, chilling, and thought-provoking tale that could work as a young adult dystopia.

6. You Can't Always Get What You Want by bookplayer

The story shows Sunset moving in with the EG version of Zecora in the aftermath of the Fall Formal. Sunset's internal monologues, which are as self-flagellating and self-deprecating as you can imagine, and Zecora being a wonderful host are wonderful things to read.

5. The Talk by Conner Cogwork

This one shot story explores Sunset coming clean about her origins to Principal Celestia.

The story really feels like something that could've happened. And the pain, reluctance, regret, sorrow, discussions on how magic could be received, differences between worlds and a final message of hope make for an engaging, emotional, and satisfying read.

4. Oops! I'm Equine by MythrilMoth

In this story, the portal's ability to transform ponies into humans fails, causing Sunset to remain trapped in her unicorn form. While Twilight and others scramble to find a solution, others with dubious aims gain an interest in Equestrian magic.

Had Equestria Girls been made into a full-length series, this would've be a good idea for a multi-arc episode. There is comedy, there is action, there is suspense, there is magical scientific discussion, and it features a surprisingly likable human Tirek.

Sadly, MythrilMoth's early passing in 2019 means the story will likely never be completed. But I'm happy with what he was able to produce.

3. Friendship Is Monsters by Meliorism

This is a story so good, it could be its own series, whether as a cartoon, a young adult novel series, or both.

This is an Equestria Girls world where humans and monsters leave side by side, but not entirely peacefully. Twilight Sparkle, a sheltered girl who grew up a humans-only neighborhood, finds the monsters she ought to be wary off more welcoming then the people she goes to school with.

This is a story with everything: world-building, comedy, suspense, serious discussions on human-monster relations, vampire Sunset, heartfelt friendship moments, and having companions who hunger for your blood.

2. Her Inner Demons by Extradimensional Alien

The Shadowbolts wonder why Sci-Twi would transform into a flying demon. The Shadowbolts learn the hard way that every human being as a breaking point.

This story also holds a special place in my heart: as someone who experienced alienation and bullying, I sympathized with Sci-Twi's psychological struggles, which are painfully and graphically expression in the story. I was really upset over how this issues were ignored in Friendship Games, and I'm glad to see them explored here. But like any good MLP story, it also ends with a message of hope and forgiveness, and that friendship can help a person work through their pain.

This story is also what inspired me to write Vanishing Act, what I consider to be my first decent story.

1. Integration by Darth Link 22

This is Darth Link's take on the aftermath of the Friendship Games. In this story, humans and ponies prepare for the inevitable first contact between civilizations. But they must be unguard as unscrupulous humans seek to gain power for themselves.

What is remarkable about this story was Darth turning out to be incredibly prescient about a lot of things that would occur in Legend of Everfree: Sci-Twi dreaming about Midnight Sparkle, her struggles with her past, and the Mane 7 getting magical powers permanently.

Again, this story does a good job of exploring Sci-Twi's lingering pain and trauma from the Friendship. And the themes of corruption, recovery, growth, the fear of what your kid might do with their life, and love all shine brightly in this story.

I feel if Equestria Girls had been allowed to be made into a half-hour show, this is how things would've unfolded.
