It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #163

Okay, so changing gears again-again. This time mostly because I have no time. This is one of those weeks where everything happens at once, and I've been positively hopping with how little free time I've got.

But that's no excuse not to talk about how absolutely cool stories are, and honestly I've made it this long without missing an update so I'm hardly going to start now.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program and my attempt to clean out my rookies shelf. (I've only got a few, I'm determined to at least catch up to this month with them.)

Okay, so there's still new people to get through but you gotta remember that this blog series is mostly reliant on my whims. And I'm a little bored on that front, so I'm gonna switch gears and do a different pair of stories. Because I can. Also because I was reminded of one of these stories this last week and they're pretty damn funny.

Probably the hardest genre to get right is mystery. Not only do you need to craft a solid narrative that fulfills all the requirements of a good drama or comedy (because without that it's just a trumped-up logic puzzle), but you also have to create that mystery itself. It can't be too obvious - otherwise why bother - but you also can't make it rely on bullshit and information the reader is never

So continuing down the road to clear out my new authors folder, I'm going to put the focus first on one of the newer folks I really like: pneu. They've got a couple of really good ones, but the one I'm settling on today is my favorite of theirs so far: Haycartes'

So I've touched on themes before - this week's is an odd one. 'Equestria Girls romance fics that have two women swing dancing on the cover'.

Look, I just work here. Don't ask me about the rules, I only follow 'em.

First up is Novel-Idea's My Kind of Crazy. One of her non-Wavelengths stories, this adorable romance attempts to mirror portions of the Movie in the Equestria Girls universe. Namely - the connection between Pinkie Pie and Skystar.

One's a party fanatic high school student; the other is the daughter of an important foreign dignitary who desperately needs to smile. Together, they fight crime! get into a barrage of shenanigans as Pinkie introduces Skystar to a lot of just one things.

Novel does a great job capturing the energy of two of the fandom's most high intensity characters, but moreso she writes a Pinkie who's earnest and hopeful, avoiding the pitfalls a lot of lesser writers stumble into with Pinkie. There's no moments of eye-rolling as the gags go too far or the fourth wall gets broken yet again - just a well-meaning girl trying to do something nice for somebody she likes and wants to know more. It's sweet, it's heartwarming and it's just plain cute.

TMy Kind of Crazy
Skystar never got a chance to make friends. Pinkie’s determined to show her how. Clearly, this will involve swing dancing.

Standing alongside that one is Great and Powerful, Darling! by Krickis. Another one sitting outside the author's main continuity (in this case, Who We Become), it blindsided me with the pairing. I mean, Trixie and Rarity? It's a super uncommon one, but it makes so much sense when you think about it. (Technically I think it would be termed Rarxie or Trixity, but I think just calling it The Drama encapsulates well.)

It starts out simple and logical, too. Trixie comes to Rarity for wardrobe help in advance of a big show. The two hit it off - for obvious reasons - and it escalates as Rarity gets entangled in helping the show with more than just sewing.

I love this one because it fits together two characters that you rarely see together and yet work so well with each other . Their personalities are practically tailor-made to bounce off of each other and bolster their strengths. They go together like fire and more fire, and it's aided by Krickis' talent for the little details and adorable moments. Like Trixie talking about her faithful (station) wagon, or Rarity's final 'trick' during the show. The whole story's a treat and makes me smile every time I read.

TGreat and Powerful, Darling!
Creating an outfit for a magician is an intimate process. Rarity never knew this. But then, she comes to find there are a lot of things she never knew once she takes on a commission from The Great and Powerful Trixie.

a couple hits :D

They go together like fire and more fire

Yeah, that sounds about right for a Rarity-Trixie pairing! :duck::trixieshiftleft:

Ooh I missed this when you made the recs, but I'm so glad that my ego decided to say "What are people saying about me?" and I searched out blogs with my name in them, because your words made me so very happy! Thank you for the promo, it means a lot :yay:

More than happy to!

To be honest, the only reason I haven't featured you more is because I am totally stuck on which part of Who We Become to headline! There's so many good choices it's hard to decide.

(And no shame in the blog search, I do that myself every couple of months.)
