Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

My Little Snowflame: Cocaine Is Magic by KenSES64
Reading by RDdramaticreadings
The RD surprisingly stands for Razor and Daedaltheus, rather than what you might think. They're honestly no worse than Voz and Mobius's live readings, just as unfocused and commentary and dumb jokes. Unfortunately, Razor is too loud and Daedaltheus is too soft, so there's no way to properly balance the volume. Also, they do what I'd call getting too far into the joke, and this was kind of annoying to have to listen to. I'll give 'em a pass.
Genre: Marvel Crossover/HiE Comedy
Once again, Twilight summons a weird creature through a portal. This one might be weirder than most.
So Snowflame came up in conversation recently, which reminded me of reading the one story in this series, and then I found out this one had a reading by someone I'd not heard before, so I figured why not? Again, if you don't know who Snowflame is, do check out the indicated video. He's hilarious in concept, in a "they thought this was a good idea?" kind of way. Unfortunately, he's also tiresome in large doses, especially when he's basically the only joke in a story. I won't say I didn't laugh at this, because his misinterpretation of the show's message was amusing on a couple levels, but I also don't think I'll read any more of these. At least there's more to this than the other one I read.

Through the Eyes of a Librarian by P0nies

Genre: Future Fic/Character Death
Twilight gives her all for Rainbow.
Yaknow, I thought this was going to be a suicide fic, but thankfully the note Rainbow finds next to Twilight is more prophetic than apologetic. That said… I'm not really sure what the point of this was? Rainbow's old, she goes to visit Twilight, finds her dead beside the potion it literally killed her to make, and stuff happens. I'm not sure what the message is, beyond Rainbow realizing what's most important to her, but there's also not enough backing to the piece to really make the ending leave any kind of impression.

You Were Supposed to SLAY the Dragon, Not LAY It! by Enigmatic Otaku
Reading by Scarlett Blade
Mature: Sex
Genre: 2P Anthro HiE Comedic Clop
Another village has sent you off to fight a supposed dragon.
I remember a time when it seemed like you could not get away from this story or its sequels. If you had Mature on, this was everywhere. And with over 50k views in the last four years, this might very well be in need of a vs. post. But I don't want to deep analyze porn, guys. I really don't. As it is, this is apparently the second time Scarlett Blade's read this story, and I didn't read it the first time, so… What the hell. Enigmatic Otaku's not a bad writer, the story's popular, the title is funny in an extremely juvenile way. Lezdodis. So yeah, it's all right, I can see why people like it. Writing's decent, sex is decent, lots of funny stuff, written in the self-effacing way of the best AiE fics without ever using the accursed name, and it's one of those stories that's meant to make the reader feel like a Big Many Virile Man because they got to sex everyone's waifu of the moment. Yes, I'd have appreciated it more if the two characters didn't go from hostile strangers to fuckbuddies in a few thousand words, but at least clear effort went into this, which is more than you can say for a lot of clopfics. And like… I've been a furry for over 20 years now (which I think qualifies me as a greymuzzle?) and yet I don't go seeking out anthro fics a lot? Porn or otherwise? So I appreciated that aspect, at least. Maybe it's time to change that.

Don't Mess Up by ABadger
Reading by VisualPony
Genre: Random
Try to mess left if at all possible.
Well, this sure is a thing. c.c I agree with the description's assertion that the Comedy tag is questionable. Not that there aren't funny bits in here, but this is clearly more focused on being random/weird than funny. So if you like stories that are mostly about magical headcanon… well, you might be disappointed, because this is Discord talking about chaos magic, and he never really gets there, y'know? It's still kind of in that vein. Be warned, you will reach semantic satiation with "mess[ing] <direction>", especially via the reading.

The Bird… or the Cage? by The Wandering Bard
Reading by the Author, MelancholyIguana and Will-Owl-the-Wisp
Genre: Bioshock Infinite Crossover
The Luteces always appear in times of crisis, to provide counsel to those who need it. Celestia wishes they would go away.
You know what's funny? This is actually a canonical crossover. The characters in this appear in the background of an episode somewhere, and that's actually rolled into this piece, which takes place the day before and of Luna's transformation into Nightmare Moon. I'm pleased to have realized that's what was meant, because otherwise, there's nothing really saying these two needed to be used this way. It's interesting to think that Celestia might not have used the Elements without a vague assurance that sending Luna to the moon was the way to eventually save her, but nothing says it had to be these characters giving her that assurance. That said, I like that Celestia already knew who they were, and I also like that this puts a finger in the eye of all those fics that treat Celestia as if she purposefully intended to moon her sister. Like, no, obviously not, and the reason she would? Would be with that aforementioned assurance. I've seen enough Bioshock: Infinite to know the twist at the end, but I actually haven't seen the Luteces enough to comment on how they're written here. I'll just say it's effective, and puts a unique spin on the story the show is built on.

The episode in which Robert and Rosalind Lutece turn up is Trade Ya! I can only imagine there's a pony Booker out there as well...

NO! YOU CAN'T GIVE ENIGMA PRAISE. HE MIGHT REALIZE HE'S PEOPLE!

And I agree with you. It's not a bad story. It's a case of perfect time and perfect place. Is there much better written clop out there? Of course. But Enigma struck his story at the exact perfect time to make it explode. He really grew over time and I whole heartedly suggest "A Stallion's Strength" if you haven't read it yet.

Also, Anon is not an accursed name :V
